Madonna not happy with M.I.A.’s middle finger

Madonna AP

Madonna had kept quiet for five days after being upstaged by a middle finger shot to the crowd and cameras by M.I.A. during her five seconds or so of close-up time during the 13-minute lip-sync halftime show during Super Bowl XLVI.  On Friday, Madonna spoke publicly for the first time about the incident.

I was really surprised,” Madonna said in an appearance on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show.  “I didn’t know anything about it.  I wasn’t happy about it.  I understand it’s punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy, and positivity it seemed negative.  It’s such a teenager . . . irrelevant thing to do . . .  there was such a feeling of love and unity there what was the point?  It was just out of place.”

In short, Madonna told M.I.A., “Get off my lawn.”

The irony is that, when Madonna was much older than a teenager, she was engaging in “teenager . . . irrelevant things to do,” all in the name of getting attention and/or notoriety and/or ultimately making more money.

But she failed to realize someone would do to her exactly what she would have done to Cher or Diana Ross or Michael Jackson whoever else would have been reckless enough to invite Madonna onto the stage 25 years or so ago and to give her only a few seconds of time in the spotlight.

Just as many fans were upset with a 13 lip-synched halftime show.

I dont care much for Madona, but Id much rather see someone actually sing even though there might be flaws, than watch somebody pretend like they have a perfect voice for 13 minutes even while dancing.

It comes accriss as cheap and amatuer. If you cant actually “sing” during the halftime show, then do be the halftime show singer.

I was more annoyed by that then the middle finger.

Pretty said when you feel the only way you can get attention is to give people the finger.

Ok let me just say I hate ALL halftime shows. I don’t like things that have any possibility of ruining or even slightly messing up the field of play for the players. I know they’re there for the casual fan blah blah blah. I just hate that the causal fan is even a concern of the NFL.

Next, a woman who simulated sex acts onstage during that same show is complaining about a middle finger being inappropriate? Pot/kettle.

“no such thnng as bad publicity” and MIA has gotten TONS of publicity.

  8. mikeeg says: Feb 11, 2012 10:29 AM

When LMFAO came out, Madonna should have sang ” im sixty and i know it”. Loosen up Grandma….

  9. domeunit says: Feb 11, 2012 10:48 AM

I’m not happy that Madonna was the halftime show…but what are you gonna do? The NFL needs to pick more recent artists to perform at the Superbowl

  10. whatsafairway says: Feb 11, 2012 10:56 AM

I’d have preferred MIA to have a wardrobe malfunction.

  11. purplengold says: Feb 11, 2012 10:57 AM

She can solo for a short time using only one finger, but can she play an instrument or sing?

  12. pisano says: Feb 11, 2012 11:00 AM

Why this has been was ever picked to do the half time show is beyond me. This bitch has been over the hill for a long time. Hell, I thought she was dead!

  13. rahavort says: Feb 11, 2012 11:04 AM

Who is this M.I.A character and why does she continue to make “music” if you’re invited to perform at the Superbowl, respect the opportunity, don’t make an idiot of yourself.

  14. pixelito says: Feb 11, 2012 11:21 AM

Every performer has to lip-synch at the Superbowl, Even Petty and Bruce… They don’t give you a choice.

    And who’s this MIA?

“I wasn’t happy about it. I understand it’s punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy, and positivity it seemed negative. ”

The sound you hear is Sid Vicious spinning in his grave. Since WHEN can M.I.A. be considered “punk rock”?

The Super Bowl halftime show has been on a downward spiral ever since they quit booking “Up With People.”

I remember one time they were singing the Fifth Dimension’s “Up, Up and Away” and then they broke straight into the Lettermen’s “Goin’ Out of My Head Over You” and I was all “NO WAY!!!”

  17. bigpara says: Feb 11, 2012 11:30 AM

That was the WORST half time show ever. No real performer wants to do the half time show, it’s just the money and fame lures them to do it. It’s a testosterone fill game and in the middle of it, it stops to watch a 52 or so, washed up performer lip syncing. I miss the times when the half time started, I could flip over to MTV to watch Beavis and Butthead’s halftime show. Get rid of half time performers and maybe use that time to show clips of great plays during the regular season.

  18. eaglendc says: Feb 11, 2012 11:31 AM

Can’t we just get a marching band? Pick the college champion band and we won’t have to worry about this anymore. That said, I thought Madonna was far better than recent halftime shows.

  19. homebruer says: Feb 11, 2012 11:35 AM

Why is it that the biggest moment for the NFL gets more pubilicity for the idiots jumping around mouthing words at halftime than the actual game? I loathe every minute not involving football around the superbowl. Watching the superbowl has gotten to be like getting a prostate exam, im not looking foward to it but ill just get it over with. MOOOOON RIIIVERRRR! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPStwD1C8-c

  20. dlmcc1010 says: Feb 11, 2012 11:36 AM

the media feeds right into it. First of all, none of the readers who read this site and love the game should give a crap about the halftime show. Most of us guys used the half hour break to get a beer, smoke a cigarette, take a leak, or get more food.

There is no band, no artist, no nothing that I am interested in seeing while I watch football. This imbecile gave the middle finger so that you can all talk about her in hopes that someone wil buy her record. Invite trash to the game and except to get garbage as a result

  21. noeffinway says: Feb 11, 2012 11:37 AM

Absolutely the best SB halftime production I have seen in years!

  22. rexachss says: Feb 11, 2012 11:47 AM

Madonna said what?…..smart move….the PR machine does its job…..
    Lol

  23. hardmike57 says: Feb 11, 2012 11:48 AM

Guess that’s part of the aging process- you conviently forgot the crazy, stupid things you did when YOU were young. I’m quilty of this myself. Still, it shouldn’t detract from ( I reculantly admit), one of the better SB halftime shows……

  24. tfbuckfutter says: Feb 11, 2012 11:58 AM

I’d rather see a middle finger than another exposed granny boob.

  26. nomoreseasontix says: Feb 11, 2012 12:17 PM

It’s comical how these entertainers take themselves so seriously.
Madonna hired some guy to put together a ridiculous amount of choreography so she could prance around in silly outfits while lip-syncing nonsense lyrics over canned electronic “music”.

And she acts like it’s important.

    Get over yourself, honey.

  27. tmtz2112 says: Feb 11, 2012 12:32 PM

I’m shocked that WD-40 wasn’t the sponcer for the halftime show, i mean im sure they had to use a few tall cans to loosen up maddonas 60 year old hips, and as far as MIA, and LMFAO go they must be suckin on satans pecker to be gettin all the recognition they are with the lack of talent they have. WTF, i guess you dont need talent to perform in the halftime show just act like an idiot, but should we expect anything better from a MTV run production

  28. vanislebob says: Feb 11, 2012 1:04 PM

The thing is, no matter who is chosen for the half time show, forums like this will be inundated with posts about what an awful selection it was. Haters gonna hate. Personally, I found it to be quite the spectacle, with the Cirque du Soleil performers, cool lighting, etc. and I enjoyed it for what it was.

Just curious about the concluding statement in the article; how can the writer state this as if it were a fact. Does he really believe Madonna would have done a similar thing if guest starring on a Cher or Diana Ross show? Proof?

  29. eaglesfan94 says: Feb 11, 2012 1:09 PM

I used to think that “irony” was the most misused word/phrase of all time, but now I think it’s “punk rock”. smh

  30. schmitty2 says: Feb 11, 2012 1:10 PM

The best haltime show was in ’99 when I flipped over to the USA network and watched The Rock and Mankind kick the crap out of each other all over an empty arena

Prince and McCartney did not lip sync

    I absolutely loved Prince’s performance

I’m a very liberal person and I absolutely hate Madonna but you’re wrong on this one.
MIA used the super bowl halftime show to pull a bs stunt to make a bigger name for herself. In the process she disrespected Madonna and the league as a whole.
Whether, in your opinion, Madonna would or would not have done the same thing is irrelevant.
She has every right to be pissed. I would be pissed too. Is it possible that you have some personal bias against her?

    Best halftime show is still…
Dog catching frisbee in his mouth.

  34. brenenostler says: Feb 11, 2012 2:22 PM

I didn’t even know about it until the media started talking about it. With that said, goodbye pop. Back to classic rock.

Madonna says “I was really surprised”
Yet in the video for the new Madonna song, she has M.I.A. throw the finger right into the camera.

Call Henry Winkler and see if the Fonz wants to jump the shark tank again!! Bikes are built sooo much better nowadays anyway!! That would be a great halftime show!! Ayyyyyyy!!
