Richard Seymour doesn’t have one of the “out of whack” contracts that Raiders G.M. Reggie McKenzie plans to whack.
Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated points out that Seymour’s $15 million salary in 2012 became fully guaranteed a few days ago. The Raiders could have cut him to avoid half of the salary.
That’s a big price for Seymour, who is coming off a Pro Bowl season. But keeping him was a no-brainer. McKenzie had the choice to pay Seymour $7.5 million for nothing or $15 million to stay around.
Even though it was an easy decision to keep Seymour, we wouldn’t expect McKenzie to hand out many contracts like the one Seymour received last year. Two-year, $30 million contracts that are almost entirely guaranteed are generally bad for business.
