Scouting Report: Blaine Gabbert

“When in the pocket, he stands tall. He holds the ball near his shoulder and gets the ball out of his hands quickly and effectively. Under pressure, he doesn’t do a good job of stepping into pocket to avoid pressure and too often takes off instead of standing his ground and making a throw. When he feels a hit coming, he rushes his throws and doesn’t set his feet to make confident deliveries. He also struggles to set his feet and make proper deliveries when he is on the move. If he can make more confident throws when under pressure and work on his pocket presence, his footwork won’t be too much of an issue in the NFL.”

That the chalkboard is only in the same county as the playing field is well established, and all Mularkey has is “book learning”.

I don’t give a rat’s petunia about how brilliant it is conceptually to call a pass on 1st & goal from the 3 yard line with your team up 14-0 on the road; it’s sure as hell a terrific way to screw up a young QB when the resultant 97 yard pick-six occurs!!

All of his flaws were well known coming out of college and he was still being talked about as being the best QB in the draft. Gabbert was supposed to sit a year and would have benefitted greatly from it as well as a full off-season and training camp, but things didn’t work out that way. He’s still the same QB he was when some were projecting him to possibly be the number one pick PLUS he now has some valuable in game NFL experience. With a new, solid coaching staff in place most likely brought in with him and his development in mind as well as a full off season there’s no reason to believe this kid can’t be reaching his full potential sooner rather than later.

I think Blaine will develop into a solid starter. 13 games with no training camp with our starting right tackle out … why cast stones?

However, if not .. rookie QBS are relatively inexpensive compared to before (rookie wage scale), so moving on won’t set a team back nearly as far as it used to.

Captain Checkdown was terrible. No pass went farther than 10 yards, and Andre Johnson didnt become a superstar overnight, he finally got a qb in Shaub. All the potential in the world, and no gonads to back it up.

Some rookies are destroyed by their inept offensive lines and can never recover like David Carr. He was a fantastic QB with all the potential in the world, but he still hears the thundering hoarde of large and angry linemen hellbent on destruction. That’s why Carr still shudders and prepares to be hit instead of just making plays. Hopefully the same hasn’t happened to Gabbert… yet.

Mularkey has his hands full; my guess is that Gabbert gets benched four or five games in next season.

I think most of you out there calling him a bust would land in the fetal position and STAY there if you were in his place..He has potential, and I applaud Mularkey for his honesty in explaining his approach. (coach speak was getting a little tiresome). Plus, the refreshing changes that the new owner is making, things are definitely looking up here in J-ville.

However, I’ve never seen this problem fixed. I’ve never even seen it fixed in guys who suddenly wgot gun shy during their careers (see Everett, Jim), let alone starting off that way.
