Welcome to Green Bay, Mr. Williams. Mr. Thompson is waiting to meet you in the Reggie White Room at Brett Favre’s Steakhouse.

Carl, Carl, Carl.... I'm going to speak for the rest of us Packers fans on this one. Have you lost your top? There are 2 major flaws to your idea.

1) How many top free agents has Thompson signed in free agency? That's right... just 1. Charles Woodson.

2) What defense do the Packers run? Yup. 3-4. Mario would be not much different than the Aaron Kampman experiment. 4-3 DE playing out of position as 3-4 OLB. Mario is an athlete, but I wouldn't exactly count on him to cover tight ends and slot receivers now.

If Williams doesn't resign with the Texans, rest assured he will sign with a 4-3 team.

Take the Home Town Discount! wouldn’t want an owner to pay a player what they are worth on the field. Those guys have families and mistresses to pay for. Give a Billionaire a break man.

=================================
Goobs, Take it you haven’t heard of this thing called a salary cap. Idiot.
===================
Hey Gaymen1987,
Taking less money than you deserve has nothing to do with a salary cap. I wouldn't expect a pole smoker from NY to understand that though. Yes there is a salary cap nitwit. It limits the TOTAL amount spent by a team, not one players salary. IDIOT

There’s no way that Williams can anchor the edge in a 3-4 end role, which we need desperately. He’s too small, and he played outside OLB in the same defense last year and seemed to not be happy about it. Carolina immediately comes to mind, though I have no idea how much money is being sucked up by that overrated HooverVac of a QB they have.
---
6'8, 295 lbs = too small? You could argue his skill set might not suit being a 3-4 end, but certainly not his size.

Newton's cap hit is about 5 million for 2012. So not that much.

Welcome to Green Bay, Mr. Williams. Mr. Thompson is waiting to meet you in the Reggie White Room at Brett Favre’s Steakhouse.
___________

Last year all we heard from Packer fans was that the only way to build a team is through the draft, free agency is a tool of the devil, Dom Capers is a genius, and the Packers are the next NFL dynasty. Now after getting bounced out of the first round with the worst defense in NFL history, you’re desperate to get a prize free agent even if it means changing your whole defense to make him fit. It was a short dynasty.

Correction... It was the 2nd round

Come home to Carolina Mario...(we're a little strapped for cash but we'll work it out for ya!) You and Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy would be pretty stellar defensive end trio..

I believe the Superbowl champs had a similar group of defensive end talent on their roster...Make it happen Charlotte!

Packers? Really? Name me one other guy than charles Woodson that Thompson has imported from anywhere. It is a farm system mentality that he has fostered and it has worked well enough for him so far….well at least in thompson’s own mind. It would be a dream scenario for the nfls worst defense but it will never happen. Not with the super Mario price tag that is.

Hometown discounts are stupid. Notice how it never works the other way around; a team never pays a player more money than they deserve due to years of loyal service.

Umm....see: Manning, Peyton. Irsay said over and over that Manning would be the highest paid player in football even though his skills were just starting to decline. Manning made well over $20M last year and Irsay signed that deal with at least a little knowledge that Manning might not play.

Based on the comments above, I can only imagine how high the bidding would go on this guy if the fans were the GMs.

Definitely the best Free Agent to hit the market in a long time and yes, I'd love to make a spot for him on my Defense too.

@ kingbeason52

Didnt Peyton get 26 mil last year? That situation had a hometown/loyalty feel it.

You note one case in easily 100 team requests for a "home town discount". Besides Payton Manning I cannot think of a team loyalty situation (perhaps Hines Ward this year). It is horribly one sided with teams taking financial advantage of the Victor Cruz (1,500+ yards receiving in the second year of an undrafted contract) and Arian Foster (1,600+ & 1,200+ yards in the 2nd & 3rd years of an undrafted contract respectively).

There is hardly anyone left from the 2006 draft class that is still with the same team. I miss those days when teams were filled with the players they drafted. Yes, free agency is nice sometimes, but only a few teams can afford the big price tags on these players.

I don't get the hype, a borderline probowl player.

You're still welcome in Oakland Mr. Williams.
