Carl, Carl, Carl…. I’m going to speak for the rest of us Packers fans on this one. Have you lost your top? There are 2 major flaws to your idea.

1) How many top free agents has Thompson signed in free agency? That’s right… just 1. Charles Woodson.

2) What defense do the Packers run? Yup. 3-4. Mario would be not much different than the Aaron Kampman experiment. 4-3 DE playing out of position as 3-4 OLB. Mario is an athlete, but I wouldn’t exactly count on him to cover tight ends and slot receivers now.

If Williams doesn’t resign with the Texans, rest assured he will sign with a 4-3 team.

6’8, 295 lbs = too small? You could argue his skill set might not suit being a 3-4 end, but certainly not his size.

Newton’s cap hit is about 5 million for 2012. So not that much.

Umm….see: Manning, Peyton. Irsay said over and over that Manning would be the highest paid player in football even though his skills were just starting to decline. Manning made well over $20M last year and Irsay signed that deal with at least a little knowledge that Manning might not play.

You note one case in easily 100 team requests for a “home town discount”. Besides Payton Manning I cannot think of a team loyalty situation (perhaps Hines Ward this year). It is horribly one sided with teams taking financial advantage of the Victor Cruz (1,500+ yards receiving in the second year of an undrafted contract) and Arian Foster (1,600+ & 1,200+ yards in the 2nd & 3rd years of an undrafted contract respectively).
