New casino could fund Vikings stadium

By letting February 15 come and go without informing the league office of an intention to relocate, the Vikings are rolling the dice on getting a new stadium built in Minnesota.  And that stadium eventually could be funded by a lot of dice rolling.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the White Earth Tribe will announce on Thursday a plan to build a casino in Minneapolis metropolitan area, which the tribe claims will generate enough money to cover the public’s share of the new stadium with no new taxes.

After the stadium is paid off, the money earmarked for the stadium would go to the state.

The White Earth Tribe, which has 20,000 members, currently runs a casino in Manhomen.

    yeah OK. as if the casino proposal hasn’t been shot down in year’s past. the other tribes would have fits.

    I’m sure that if the Packers had to do something like this to fund a new stadium, Mike would vilify them to no end about how they’re single handedly corrupting the fabrics and morals of society.

    If a casino can fund a stadium in Minnesota, then there is no reason Las Vegas cannot field a team because of gambling concerns.

    The outlandish proposal to build the stadium in Duluth should help push things along in Minneapolis… or I’ll be getting my tailgating materials ready out in West Duluth!

  5. daryllh says: Feb 15, 2012 6:04 PM

    betting on sporting events is illegal in Minnesota, not Vegas. that’s the issue for NFL and Nevada.

  6. lorenz67 says: Feb 15, 2012 6:12 PM

    @edgarpoe2

    A casino does not necessarily equal sports betting (in fact most places that have casinos don’t allow sports betting). It is the latter that generates the fear of Vegas and the rig-ged-ness.

    White earth is the tribe that runs the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen, MN. By far and away the nicest, cleanest, most well run casino/hotel north of the metro-area. I would be very exited to see what they can do with this.

  8. briang123 says: Feb 15, 2012 6:26 PM

    Casinos. Is there anything they can’t fund and any social problem they can’t fix?

  9. gen129 says: Feb 15, 2012 6:31 PM

    “yeah OK. as if the casino proposal hasn’t been shot down in year’s past. the other tribes would have fits.”

    They won’t. They know that White Earth (my tribe) has been the historically poorest federally recognized tribe in the Upper Midwest for some time now.

    (Think about it, how many Mpls yuppies or college kids say every week, “Let’s drive three and a half hours to the Shooting Star, in a high-crime city on the hardcore rez, past four or five other more ‘hip’ tribal casinos, to go gamble”? Hint: not many.)

    If the Vikes want to fund a stadium this way, I’m fine with it. (Hope they build it in the Twin Cities where the Vikes have a strong fan base, and where there’s a bit of a vacuum as far as casinos go, not very many casinos in the Cities-proper.) Kills two birds with one stone. Only way the tribes put up a fuss is if they (or at least one of “they”) don’t get a cut.

    Much more palatable to the voters than a hokey sales tax increase, as well. I just want someone to come up with a plan to build this thing so we can quit hearing “Welcome to LA” and such from the Packer trolls. As much as I hate the Pack (with every fiber of my soul, for the record), I would never want the historic rivalry between our two teams to end abruptly and unceremoniously with a relocation. Just wouldn’t feel right to me.

    I suspect the casino would have a clause that says the new stadium will be built in Arden Hills which, by coincidence, happens to share a lot with where the new casino will be. Both parties win.

    Right – like someone put a gun to their heads and said “GO GAMBLE”. Whats next? Leave it up to the by selling beer during games and making money off those who may abuse alcohol.

    gen129…….. You can thank your tribe for me. It’s about time that one of the tribes stand up on this. Mystic Lake, the biggest and most profitable casino in the state will be the one who throws a huge stink about it. But, i guess for my opinion on this, is they either allow the White Earth tribe to do this, but let the state have some input on where this casino will be located, or else burn the treaty’s and let the state run a casino. I’m tired of mystic lake having all of the fun. This casino that White Earth will take patrons from Mystic Lake. It’s a given. But there will be patron’s that go back and forth between them. I know there’s maybe 2-4 casino’s i haven’t been to in the state in the last year. And trust me, that’s alot of driving. But i will say, i know i will frequent this one quite often! And if i lose money, i’d walk out the door smiling, knowing that what i lost will atleast go towards something i love.

    @tombradysponytail……

    Are you really that naive?? Do you just hate the Vikings and find this as an opportunity to rip them? I really hope that you’re not so ignorant when it comes to gambling. Do you have a lottery in your state?? I bet you do…..how many states do you think rely on profits from a lottery? Just about all of them I would guess. How many stadiums, state projects, roads, etc. Are paid for by the lottery? How many people actually win money while buying their Powerball or scratch off? Next time you drive into work on a road that has been maintained partially by lottery revenue I hope you feel just awful about the fact that you are taking advantage of some family that has been ruined by gambling. Let’s not forget about liquor taxes that pay for state funded projects. Liquor taxes that probably benefit you in some way. I hope you’re happy with yourself, being that you’ve taken advantage of a family ruined by alcohol. People who gamble will find a place to do so, alcoholics will find a bottle to drink, drug addicts will find their fix, etc. Get over yourself.

    @tombradysponytail

    Sure, because we as individuals have no accountability for our own personal choices so it must be somebody else’s fault that I am a gambling addict.

    While were at it, we better close every liquor store in the state of Minnesota because it is their fault that I am a raging alcoholic.

    Idiot!

    gun tax! great idea! they aughta tax porn, and, while they’re at it, all crack sales and elective medical procedures! but really, isn’t a casino kind of a copout? it’s because a .o5% tax is too much, right? in this day and age, let a casino be the solution to money problems??!?!

    I’m not here to discuss politics, social programs or the perils of addiction in our society.

    So before anyone starts talking about Whitney on this football blog, the point I’d like to make is this…….

    I have no idea about the actual project…..haven’t seen or heard even what kind of stadium is being proposed. But, if it’s not an open-air stadium, the Vikings streak of non-Super Bowls will continue for another 40+ years.

    I’m not a Packer fan (Cowboys, actually) so don’t go there….but it’s fact.

    The Vikings lost “it” when they moved indoors.

    The above post is too damn funny but what else do we expect from a Packer fan. A person can gamble and at least have a “chance” of winning something and getting some type of payback. In Wisconsin they take advantage of an entire State of uneducated rednecks by selling them a worthless piece of paper for $250-$350 a pop that has no chance of being anything other than a piece of azz-wipe……I’ll take my chances on gambling.

    Here’s another Einstein post, can only be another fudge packer talking between his missing front teeth. No other team in the entire NFL sells a worthless piece of paper for $250.00 to families that spend 50% of their weekly paycheck on beer, 40% on their pickup truck and the other 10% on dating their wife’s sister. I’m from Chicago and can only be left to wonder how packer fans can’t understand how their comments and actions make them the laughing-stock of the NFL. I hate the Lions and the Vikings but at least their fans aren’t a bunch of freaking red-neck imbeciles. If any team in the NFL should be relocated, it should be the Packers…..to a city that isn’t at least fly-over country. Damn packer fans are dumber than a box of rocks.

    This would be AWESOME!!!!
    Build the casino right next to the stadium in Arden Hills. There is plent of room on that parcel of land. Here’s why it might work:

    No tax money needed (that sigh you hear is all the lame politicians here in Minnesota that are doing nothing on this because they are worried about re-election)

  23. johnnyb216 says: Feb 15, 2012 10:10 PM

    Thejuddstir,
    Don’t come whining to me when you move your family into your moms house because you gambled away the mortgage payment. I guess you’ll have your precious Minnesota vikings to thank for that (which will be the ONLY thing they’ve done for you in the last 50 years). What a bunch of careless enablers.

  24. johnnyb216 says: Feb 15, 2012 10:17 PM

    Krashie21,
    If by “it” you mean the ability to constantly lose super bowls, then I guess your right. 0-4 in the super bowl is something these fans can really hang their hat on. And your right, they haven’t had the opportunity to lose another one since they moved into that homeless shelter downtown.

  26. thankheavenfornumberseven says: Feb 16, 2012 2:07 AM

    tombradysponytail is a Packer fan who pretends to be a Patriots fan so he can rip the Vikings while appearing “objective.” His ultimate dream is to see the Vikings leave town so he can watch his precious Packers every Sunday. No doubt he’s wallpapered his basement with those worthless $250 stock certificates. He decries expansion of gambling while expanding his alcohol intake on a daily basis.
