Getty ImagesIn Denver, the phrase for today is: Let there be light.
Or not.
The local NFL stadium wants to add three massive 10-by-178-foot red-lighted lettered signs displaying the name of the new sponsor: “Sports Authority Field.” Folks who live in the vicinity of the venue have loudly objected to having their evening peace disturbed by the chronic red glow. According to the Denver Post, the fight will land Wednesday in the lap of the city’s planning board, at a public hearing.
“I am afraid those signs will be brilliant red and shining into our bedroom for the rest of our lives,” said Rick Whitney, who owns a condo three blocks north of the stadium. “Not only that, everyone in the city will have to see that.”
Of course, if the city won’t protect citizens from the hazards of pouring tomato juice onto their corn flakes, folks like Whitney can always hang a handwritten a sign protesting the presence of the lights and/or shout from their windows, “Mess you up!”
No Jerry! I need that chicken, I gotta have that chicken, you leave those roasters alone, Kenny never hurt anybody.
Knew there would be a Seinfeld reference in there, love it.
Nonsense. I love…broccoli.
Vile weed!
Does this mean people can stop calling it Mile High Stadium? Or will Denver fans never let go of that?
Newman!!
Corporations compromising public rights to not live in a post-apocalyptic b-movie were everything has a red tint… never. Sports Authority are people too!
“mess you up!” LOL
All-time stuff.
I’m with you guys. All I could think about reading that was that episode
Seinfeld was not a good show.
Mr. . . . Mr. Marbles?
“Not only that, everyone in the city will have to see that.”
Umm…that’s why they are sponsoring the stadium!!! Why would they pay the Broncos probably 8 figures per year if no one would see their name?
The real problem here is the RED! The broncos colors are orange and blue, the division rival Chiefs are red. While they’re at it why don’t they just slap some silver & black up there too. I love my Broncos, but the pr dept. needs some work.
Ha! Perfect timing. That episode was on just last night. Rat fur hat. “That’s not gonna be good for business.”
“That’s not gonna be good for anybody.”

Have you ever considered what SA’s colors are?
I’ll bet you the main color is red.
Now consider who’s paying the freight.
it will ALWAYS be Mile High as it should be and because the entire name is Sports Authority Field at Mile High. I do think the sign should be orange or blue though.

Really? Is there a certain IQ level required when commenting? Obviously not? Just pure verbal diarrhea. Sad….
Seinfeld was not a good show.

Anyone can have an opinion, but that show was one of the most successful TV programs of all time.
See the Nerds are out in full force today!
There is no “Mile High” obsession, most people have been calling it “Invesco” for years.
The problem is that you can see that stadium from half of the Denver Metro area. Most of the cost of the stadium was taxpayer funded, and no one wants this new signage. When you pass the stadium now, you can clearly see that it is “Sports Authority Field”, to put hundreds of feet of signage at the very top of the stadium is pointless. That is not their right, as they do not own the stadium. The current rings that hold the stadium lights were designed to be low profile and to not interfere with downtown Denver’s view of the mountains.
The rings at the stadium that hold the field lights were not intended to hold anything, and if you lived in Denver, you would not want the signs either. It is not a “nimby” issue, it is a common sense issue.
Sports Authority, you don’t have to put on your red light.
These days are over.
You don’t have to see your sporting goods in the night.
But seriously, do they really think the angry people around the stadium are going to flock to their store?

Successful doesn’t mean good. See Ford Maverick. See Dioxin, See any soap opera. See soccer.
“My friend Bob Saccamano sells hats just like it, $50 bucks”
I think it looks great.
Sounds like the neighbors could use a lawyer referral……..
“Yeah that’s going to be a problem. It’s gonna be a problem for them. This a clear violation of your rights as a home owner. It’s an infringement on your constitutional rights. It’s outrageous, egregious, preposterous”

Simple issue in which the public interest ought to prevail over private greed.
Sports Authority can buy the naming rights, but they have no right to infringe upon other residents’ right to “private enjoyment” of their homes, apartments, and condos.
I think Denver will do the right thing and side with the public on this one.
@kurb21:
My knee jerk reaction was that the stadium was probably already there when this guy bought his condo, so deal with it.
But now that you’ve put it in the context that having the low profile lighting was part of getting the new stadium approved, I can see the other side of the argument.
It’s vital to have these signs blazing into the night!! I know when I’m in LODO Denver at night my first thought is always “I need a pair of running shoes and some hip waders!!”
I’ve heard Denver is good at putting up billboards complaining about things they want changed.
@realitypolice,
I assure you this is not a “nimby” issue, as I said. I live far enough outside of Denver where it would not bother me, but the stadium was mostly taxpayer funded and it was designed to be unobtrusive, as it is west of the downtown area and in direct line-of-site from the city’s mountain views. Denver has some ordinances and building codes which prevent blocking mountain views, or something along those lines.
The stadium is downtown, just to the west of the busiest stretch of highway in the state, I think everyone here believes that adding these signs way up on top of the stadium is overkill and it would simply be annoying to so many people…and to others it would ruin the skyline.
I know it seems trivial, but the stadium has enough signage already. Take care.
Hopefully one of those signs falls on Tim Tebow.
Seems like everyone is taking it for granted that this red light will permeate everywhere. Do they know this though, or are they just guessing? If it does, I can understand the concern. but I would definitely find out for sure before going back to your naming sponsor and saying “No”.
God I hate the off-season……………..
Ha. Kenny Rogers chicken. Awesome.
I don’t live in Denver, but I do live downtown in Vancouver, about 2 blocks away from our local football stadium. They recently did a massive renovation of the stadium, updating it and putting a retractable roof on it.
After dealing with over a year of construction, the final touch was a massive (30 foot maybe?) screen on the outside of the stadium that they ran 24-7 with ads and such. The white ads were the worst because they made my bedroom bright enough to sit up and read a book in at 4am. With the blinds closed. The red ones were somehow worse though because they made my room glow like Satans lair. Standing in the living room looking at an erie red glow pour out of your bedroom isn’t the most inviting feeling. Strata by-laws in the building prevent you from changing your blinds because it alters the look of the building from the outside, so you are pretty much just stuck with it.
After about a month of nonstop complaints the stadium started turning the screen off at 10pm and back on at 7am. It’s better, but it’s still not a lot of fun.
Granted, this is not a big screen with a bunch of ever changing lights, but ya, it’s going to be irritating as all hell to people who live close enough. If they turn it off late at night though, people will learn to live with it pretty quick and I’m guessing everything will be ok?
