We’ve written a lot about whether the Texans will place the franchise tag on restricted free agent Arian Foster.
John McClain of the Houston Chronicle doesn’t believe it will happen, in large part because the Texans would match any offer sheet Foster signs elsewhere. (And because the Texans need the cap room.)
Foster’s agent Mike McCartney doesn’t sound like he would mind getting the tag.
“I think it’s part of the business,” McCartney told Lance Zierlein on The Big Show on 790AM in Houston. “The ultimate goal is a long-term deal where this marriage continues. . . . It’s just part of the process. The Texans have to do what’s right for them at the beginning of this and we’ll adjust accordingly. It won’t offend us in any way. We’ll do our best to have a long-term deal.”
This is not a surprise. Foster will get paid almost three times as much on the franchise tag rather than the highest restricted free agent tag. Foster also willingly signed his exclusive rights free agent tender last year.
The goal is a long-term deal, but it sure sounds like Foster wouldn’t hold out of offseason workouts if the Texans used the franchise tag on him.
