Plus, he'd been covered rather effectively by Chase Blackburn alone against the Giants. He's not the "matchup nightmare" everyone proclaims him to be. Linebackers alone effectively took him out of gameplans, and his inability to make plays (or even catches) in such a mismatch situation allowed defenses to choke out deep ball players like Nelson and Jennings with their safeties and rendered the offense rather useless. It's on tape, look for yourself.

I’m not sure what’s up with all the Finley hate, I think he’ll be a fan favorite after this season when he tears it up. Then everyone’ll say “I was on the Finley train all along!”.

And if he leaves, I guess its don’t know what you got till it’s gone, and the wide open passing game from last year will have to close up without an option at TE and no mismatch to draw multiple defenders away from the other guys.
-------------------------------------------------------------

The normal gametime starting lineup cards list four wide and no TE option for Green Bay. That's why he's been flexed out quite often and he and his agent have a leg to stand on with this WR money arguement. Spread systems normally don't sport TE's with top pay. Look at Ernie Conwell and Roland Williams with the Rams during the Greatest Show on Turf. He is not a necessity, and I directly challenge anyone who claims he can improve on his lackluster performance as a Packer (outside of 2009) somewhere else. He's streaky, and always has been. He can't maintain an efficient high level of play for an entire season, and he's not worth top five TE money or even worthy of the conversation.

Actually, they have a shot to get the arbitrator to side with them on WR money, thank McCarthy for that. This kid is an attitude and a problem, just because McCarthy likes him does not mean he needs to stay with the Packers (see Ryan Grant). He’s proven he’s a cancer and his bad attitude has already affected his potential. He’s shot. Good luck extorting that WR money from any other team, and good riddance Finley.

—————————————————————————-

If you are Finley’s agent you have to try and make him the most money or you are doing a disservice to him. In fact you’d be moronic not to make the WR/TE argument, I think they’ll find a middle ground. I don’t understand how he is a cancer… He really has matured and his “bad attitude” doesn’t really ever show up.
Yeah he wanted to be in the Super Bowl picture, deservedly so, he played up until the moron Donald Lee fumbled and got him hurt in 2010.
The Packers can’t afford to fall behind teams like the Saints and Patriots and have nothing at TE again (remember the end of the 2010 season without him?) if the Packers don’t bring him back the position looks bleak to say the least with two second year players and Quarless coming off an ACL tear.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Respectfully, there is a reason they drafted the 2010 Mackey Award Winner in Williams last offseason. Maturity was a rather large red flag for Finley throughout his career. He's shown his immaturity in comments regarding team management (the team photo incident at the Super Bowl) as well as his implications as to the performance of the defense. Facts are this team played better without him in the playoffs than with him all season long. Argue the point as you wish, but they won a championship without "Mr. Wonderful" already. It's not exactly leaving the roster in tatters with more promising prospects like Williams and Taylor. I think it's safe to say Quarless is done, at least in the NFL. He was having a hard enough time with separation and speed to the ball <i>before</i> the knee injury. He was also the first string TE in the Super Bowl with those hinderances.

Everyone loves finley, but the stats are what they are, he is not an elite tight end, he may become one but so might ed dickson, hernandez, gresham, fred davis, dustin keller, pettigrew......finleys best season of his career was last season, he was 24. The stats are 55 rec (14th among all TE's) 767 yards (12 among all TE's) 8 td's (3rd among all tight ends). Why should the packers give this guy big money HE HASNT DONE ANYTHING ELITE YET. he should be happy they offer him the 4 million dollar franchise tag, then come out next year ball out become a pro bowler then he will get paid. hes not in the class of ray rice, foster, dashon goldson, even desean jackson. They have all proven to be elite at there position and deserve to be paid

Finley could successfully argue that he is a WR because that is the position that he generally lines up in. That is how they use him. If he gets hurt or pulled for a few plays, they don't replace his position in their base offense with a TE. They use a WR. They use their actual TE's the way most teams use TE's.

He certainly is a hybrid position so maybe they can compromise but his primary role on their team is a big bodied pass catcher who lines up split wide or in the slot.

Two things:
1) Finley is NOT a lock to receive the tag. Maybe if he could live up to the hype and his talent potential, it could be plausible. He could start by actually catching 2 balls in a row and not showboating when he catches 1 out of 10.

2) The Packers have more than shown that they can do just fine without him. They're deep at receiver and have a couple of really promising guys at tight end.

Finley is a guy of great potential, no question. But his attitude and lack of focus make him a good candidate to make for a high risk free agent to some team willing to pay him the money. I really wouldn't be shocked if they do make an offer, it'll be a mid-level contract and with some incentives.

I say let him walk and win another Super Bowl without him.

Carr might not be good enough to warrant a tag and Bowe reeks of "pack it in once I get paid".

That said, the Chiefs better do some serious spending on retaining those guys or landing a few whales from other teams. One source I have seen says they have over $60M(!!) in cap room counting the rollover from last season.

Going to have to start spending just to meet the salary floor.

You do realize the Bengals made the playoffs last year...right?

They are projected by most to get there again in 2012. So maybe you should re-think your statement.

Why would the Broncos tag their kicker? I would think they could just sign him to a short term deal a lot cheaper than wasting their franchise tag on him. Jano's salary alone has to bring the tag above what they could get away with paying Prater

@mac3333,
I don’t think there is a tag value for safeties. They are defensive backs along with cornerbacks. It is similar for DL and OL — RG and LT have the same cap number, ditto for DE/DT, etc.

______________________________

Your wrong about almost all three, safetys have their own tag number (6.5 mil) DE and DT have diff tag numbers (just over 12 Mil for DE and 7 mil for DT) and OL is the only area where they all have the same tag number... kind of dumb considering that the pay scale for each position is so differant. Not only do tackles make more than guards but LT make more than RT.

Just my opinion...it hurts teams trying to franchize a center or guard but helps teams trying to franchize a LT.

If you are Finley's agent you have to try and make him the most money or you are doing a disservice to him. In fact you'd be moronic not to make the WR/TE argument, I think they'll find a middle ground. I don't understand how he is a cancer... He really has matured and his "bad attitude" doesn't really ever show up.
Yeah he wanted to be in the Super Bowl picture, deservedly so, he played up until the moron Donald Lee fumbled and got him hurt in 2010.
The Packers can't afford to fall behind teams like the Saints and Patriots and have nothing at TE again (remember the end of the 2010 season without him?) if the Packers don't bring him back the position looks bleak to say the least with two second year players and Quarless coming off an ACL tear.

@uwsptke................. Vernon Davis has been in the league 2 years longer than Finley and just signed a huge extension. He is among the top 3 paid at the position if not top and technically Davis would be the first of the new wave. Also, Finley has a load of talent, but I don't believe he could unseat any of those guys you mention as a starter. He is much more like a more expensive Delanie Walker with a big mouth.... A matchup nightmare that is too inconsistent with the drops. Walker would likely start on 20 teams or more in the NFL if he weren't playing opposite Davis but he wouldn't be grouped among the elite and neither should Finley. @49erJohnny umm because they aren't paying him 15 mil even if for only a year. It's cheaper to give him a backloaded contract and cut him if he doesn't keep climbing. @ Bleedgreen.... I'm pretty sure the new CBA prevents them from slapping a 3rd FT on VJax anyway, but regardless I think they are letting him walk. As to Carr and Bowe.... yes KC please tag Carr :D

Finley isn't going to be getting the tag for Green Bay, Scott Wells is. He's a core player for GB and there hasn't been any progress towards a new deal. Finley is a luxury, not a necessity, and he's not a blue chip player. They use the same tact they used last offseason with James Jones.
