APWe already passed along some of the highlights from NFL Network Mike Mayock’s marathon two hour conference call on Wednesday.
Listening to Mayock is the best way to start catching up on draft preparations, so here’s a quick recap of some other worthy nuggets.
1. Mayock thought the draft is deepest at defensive tackle. He has 5-7 first rounders at that position. He says it’s very thin at defensive end, but very deep for interior offensive linemen. So if you need a big ugly on either side of the ball, this is your draft.
2. Expect Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill to go solidly in the first round. Mayock says Tannehill lacks some anticipation and throws into coverage, but he was ver intrigued by his skill set.
3. Mayock is not a Quinton Coples guy. The UNC product made noise at the Senior Bowl. Mayock says Coples looks the part, but doesn’t play like it.
4. On the possibility of Boston College inside linebacker Luke Kuechly going to the Eagles: “”I think he starts day one and really solidifies what they’ve got going on up front there.”

This should be the Detroit Lions draft they can stand some help up the middle in the O-line.
Works out perfectly for the Steelers. Grabbing an OG or NT would be huge.
Steelers need a nose tackle and an offensive line.
Hope they find it in this draft.
3. Mayock is not a Quinton Coples guy. The UNC product made noise at the Senior Bowl. Mayock says Coples looks the part, but doesn’t play like it.
Sounds like the guy the Bills will draft, you know instead of a player that will actually contribute and that they need. Like an offensive tacke.
I don’t know about other positions, but Mayock is not a very good judge of QBs.
I really like Mike Mayock. I think he is one of the best evaluators in the business.
I guarantee the Eagles will not draft Luke Kuechly. In fact, I’d put my whole life savings into that bet.
He would be the best player on the board and at a potion that we have a need in….but it’s too simple for the Eagles. They need to “outsmart” everyone.
Thanks again for not drafting JPP.

I don’t think you will see another Aaron Maybin land in Buffalo as long as Nix is in charge. Besides, Our O-line was one of the best things last year, we just need some depth incase of injury. Where we need the most help is DE or OLB. Wouldn’t be upset seeing either a DE, OLB, CB or a big WR. Any other position in the first round would be a waste.
Go Bills!!!!
@soulman
I’d prefer Janoris Jenkins.
Would like to see 49ers get some depth behind Justin Smith. Can’t expect him to be playing every snap in two years.
buffalohogan the bills main need is a pass rusher which is a 4-3 DE so Coples would be a great fit and fills the biggest need. OT is the 3rd biggest need so Im sure 90% of Bills fans will be happy with this pick
@gmen1987: If he was great at evaluating all positions, he wouldn’t be in the media lol
I don’t think anyone is good at evaluating QBs. It’s still a crapshoot.

=====================================
Andy Reid won’t draft a LB before the 4th round unless Lurie puts a gun to his head. Oh wait, he’s done it a few times – Matt McCoy in the 2nd round and Steward Bradley in the 3rd…
People always say “if Mayock was actually a good scout, he’d be working for an NFL team”.
They neglect the fact that he makes vastly more money than NFL scouts and gets to be a broadcaster to boot. NFL scouts would like his job, not the other way around.
Mayock has a unique ability to be very objective in evaluating talent. He should be a GM.
Mayock is one of the best on TV as he at least does his homework but like anyone else he has his share of misses. RE: Quinton Couples – Mayock wasn’t very high on ALDON SMITH either, lucky for me the 49ers disagreed with him!!!
For the record: Mike Mayock has NEVER EVER been a scout at any level in football. He was a former NFL player for the Giants that became a broadcaster and then an analyst.
illinininer – The Nineres have good depth behind Justin Smith in Ricky Jean, Demarcus Dobbs, and Ian Williams. We are a lot thinner in other places (CB, WR, OG, S, OLB). I would place D-line close to last on our needs list.
Why would the Eagles draft Luke Kuechly? We already have Casey Mattress (4th round pick) and two 7th round picks playing Linebacker. who with any sanity could think they were going to be successful with Mattress and one 5′-9″incher and another 7th rounder.? Giants 2 Super Bowl Rings in 4 years….Eagles have the 3 worst linebackers in all pro football. Cinn, 49ers improving. Reid and his stubborn stupidity getting worse every year. Watch for another under siezed 6′-2′…230#(Brandon Grahm) def lineman to be picked and…who will be this years Pierre Paul that they pass on. Who is this years Jerome McDougal or Stacy Andrews or Jerome Allen or the kid from Temple both safeties. Who will be this years 28 year old guard as a first round pick?
Mayock’s pretty good.

@buffalohogan et al
Undersized as a draft philosophy has proven to be lunacy. Other teams draft players taller than 5’10″ and weighing more than 180 lbs.

Hmmm, ironically after the season, the DT wasn’t thought to be deep at all. I think this guy is full of junk. Just ask Jamarcus.
oldbyrd, you hit the nail on the head. good post
He must be making more money than most GM
This may be the year Andy HAS to take a day one starter – he may not get another chance at drafting anybody if he fouls up again this year.
