Rex Ryan planning on getting a Super Bowl ring, quickly

AP

Think an 8-8 record would get Rex Ryan to stop talking about winning a Super Bowl? Think again.

At a function on Wednesday night, Ryan displayed the Super Bowl ring he earned as an assistant with the Ravens and said he expects to earn another as head coach of the Jets, and to do it soon.

“I’m the only one [in the Ryan family of coaches] with only one Super Bowl ring,” Ryan said, via the New York Daily News. “But I’m planning on getting another one, and I’m planning on getting it quickly.”

Ryan refused to talk about rumors that the Jets could make a play for Peyton Manning, noting that he’d risk an NFL fine if he did, but he praised quarterback Mark Sanchez as having a bright future with the team. And he said that the disappointing ending to 2011 doesn’t diminish his bold ambitions with the Jets.

“We got some scars this year from this,” Ryan said. “Anybody who doesn’t have scars is either lying to you or never dared. One thing about us: We dare. We put it out there — I put it out there — that we want to be great.”

  1. “Rex Ryan planning on getting a Super Bowl ring, quickly…”

    ————————-

My first thought was a guest appearance on “Pawn Stars”. The TV Guide would say something like ‘Jet’s Coach Ryan meets kindred spirit Chumlee while buying Brock Williams Super Bowl ring’

My second thought was he was going to find Brandon Jacobs and sit on him until he gave Rex his.

  2. Guys like this never stop talking. People eventually just stop listening. Once he is fired from the Jets in a year or so no one will ever interview him again.

  3. I know I’m going to get lampooned for this, but give Rex Ryan a break. He led the Jets to the AFC Championship game his first two years as their coach! Sure, last season imploded, but you guys are making comments as if he only won a couple games each year. You guys are ridiculous!

  4. Rex, next time you are asked about the future of the Jets, please just say that your team sucks and they will never earn a ring. That’ll teach ’em.

  5. when he kisses bellichecks rings he is going to try and steal one

cause the only rings in this losers future are the onion rings at denny”s

  6. I think all teams “put it out there” but they do so by working in their offices and not in radio interviews. By being a head coach or general manager or any member of an NFL organization you “put it out there” every day of the year.

  7. Let’s be clear about this, in case this quote clouds the issue – for all the mouthiness and self promotion in the entire Ryan family, the three of them have won a grand total of ONE super bowl ring as either a coordinator or head coach – Buddy’s as dc for the Bears. The rest is just hot air, or going along for the ride as assistants on someone else’s staff.

  8. Boomer Esiason was there too….he had some nice words about Mark Sanchez! To bad you did not include that into your post.

  9. Greatest part of the whole story was when he said, “One thing about us: We dare.” How about you dare yourself to stay quiet.

It must of killed him to see the Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl!

They showed a video clip of Manningham making the winning catch. Rex Ryan shifted in his seat and clapped lightly.

  11. Sounds like he is planning on breaking into the Giants locker room and stealing Tom Coughlin’s ring because that will be the closest he will ever be to one as a HC in the NFL.

Hello is that you james? Typical jets fan comment, “we made it to the AFC Championship game twice” .

But then again after 43 years of futility and knowing the Houston Oilers have won more AFC East Championships than the jets I guess that is as good as it will ever get!

Next comes the 44th SB less season in a row!

  12. how about this…the next time this joker says something like this the media simply ignore him.

that would achieve the dual purpose of most likely shutting him up completely and me not having to read the same story recycled for the 19th time.

  13. I can’t stand the Meadowlands Jets. However, if Rex goes 9-7 or worse, they will have to part ways with him and he knows it. This is it big fella. Time to produce or you’ll get the big black, sexy stilletto send off

  14. Hello:

The issue here is not whether he won a few games – he actually did a decent job. What the issue is, is his flapping yap. He guarantees a Bowl win every year, yet the only bowl he gets to visit is the porcelain one he sits on every morning. So, why we harsh on Fatboy is simple – he cannot shut up nor back up his alleged guarantees. And until he develops a sense of humility, groups his poop, gets his team all on the same page, and gets them to a Bowl that’s way overdue, and actually wins it, only then will we shut up.

Until then, Rex is a target. Fair game (LOL)

  15. Why don’t you get your WR to stop hitting the trees, Smith to learn how to play safety, Hunter to pass protect, and your QB to stop throwing with his eyes closed

  16. You know, if you tallied up all the events and reports that have come out of the Jets this offseason, and then made a movie out of it, I bet most movie audiences wouldn’t buy it because it’s too ludicrous. It’d have to be a comedy with all the turmoil, right down to Rex’s predictions that the team will somehow win the Super Bowl.

  17. I believe he is referring to the ring he is receiving as a “thank you” from the Mara and Tisch families for waking up and motivating the sleeping GIANTS.

Thanks again REX! The Giants organization appreciates your help, couldn’t of done it without you!!

  18. Talk is cheap, just shut up and do it.

I understood the bravado when he first got there, the needs had a culture of losing and it needed to change, but now they’ve had some success so they need to pipe down and get to work – all this talk creates too many distractions. Nobody ever won a SB by talking about it.

  19. Most coaches that end up winning a Super Bowl usually just go about their business and let it happen IF it even does.

The last few coaches to win: Coughlin, McCarthy, Tomlin, Dungy weren’t mouthing off about winning Rings… they just went out and did it and even after they won they didn’t rub it in either.

Rex is fixated on the Ring and not how to get there, something that respectable and legendary coaches do NOT do.

A lot of things have to go right to win even 1, start with winning the Division first and then see what happens.

    ———————————————————-
To be even clearer, Rex has 1 from Baltimore, Buddy has 1 each from the Jets and the Bears, and Rob has 2 from the Pats. What was that you were saying about ‘mouthiness’?

  21. Well what is he supposed to say? They don’t plan on getting a ring soon?

    ————————————————–

How about saying nothing about winning the Super Bowl, just for once… you know, thats always an option for every other Head coach in the league.

  22. There are a very few sports associated personalities that a vast amount of people who know their names.

    The list is:

    Peyton Manning
    Rex Ryan
    Jeremy Lin
    Tom Brady
    Mark Sanchez
    Santonio Holmes
    Eli Manning

Those are right now the most talked about Sports People in the entire world!

  23. Interesting that Rex doesn’t bother to mention that his family may have multiple Superbowl rings, but none of them have done it as a head coach. Buddy’s ego was twice that of his sons, and he won ’em as assistants, on the Jets huge upset of the the Colts, and when he was under Ditka coaching da Bears D. Buddy may know the X’s and O’s and taught that to his sons, but he forgot or didn’t have the ability to teach them about how humbleness doesn’t equal weakness. Look at Tomlin, Dungy, even Belichick (who has the personality of sandpaper at times unless yer a 1st ballot Hall of Famer he’s coachin’). They know that actions will speak louder than words.

  24. Not a Jets fan but I have to admit, I paid little or no attention to them before Rex and his famous “we’re not gonna kiss his rings” comment. Loved it. Coaches like him a great for the NFL and if I were an owner and my HC did not state the goal every year was to win the Super Bowl I would fire him. I’ve always heard him say that but never a guarantee that they would just that that was the goal.

  25. I thought there was a 3rd brother named Dan who is not in football. At least I recall he opened a bar called Dan Ryan’s around the time the Ryan Family stunk up Arizona. Wikipedia is no help on finding out about Dan. I’ll be the first to admit my confidence on a 3rd bother is only at 70-80%

  26. Great way to pull a quote out of context. He was being asked about his day 1 prediction that the Jets would win a SB in Obama’s presidency. He said he thought they were the best team the last three years but was proven wrong.

You expect him to say they’re not going to try to win this year? Not much chance of that.

  27. The first year Rex shot his mouth off it was obnoxious, the second year it was kind of a boring sideshow, and now it has moved to the pathetic. You can’t teach smart to stupid.

  28. Hello. Is that you James? says:

    ——————–

So the fact that he guarantees the SB but doesn’t deliver is ok with you?

Personally, I am ok him continuing to be wrong but give him a break – I don’t think so…

  29. personally i don’t like rex but i don’t see anything newsworthy here.

everyone’s goal is to win a superbowl and it’s the toughest championship to win in all of sports.

at least the guy has a goal….

  30. TCU stands a better chance of a national championship than Rex getting a second ring, at least as long as Sanchez is at the helm -sorry for party rocking.

  31. Regardless of who the head coach is, these days it takes an elite QB to win a ring. We all know there is only one ELIte QB in that town.

Elmoron, you picked the right name. Next time, read the post.

  33. In the 6 seasons Mike Tannenbaum has been Jets GM…

    Jets:
    – 2 head coaches
    – 4 starting QBs
    – no division titles
    – 3 playoff appearances
    – no playoff home games
    – no wins beyond the division round
    – no Super Bowls
    – 3 Super Bowl guarantees

    Giants:
    – 1 head coach
    – 1 starting QB
    – 2 division titles
    – 4 playoff appearances
    – 2 playoff home games
    – 2 NFC titles
    – 2 Super Bowl wins
    – zero guarantees

Coughlin just matched Parcells with 2 Lombardis in 5 seasons. If Coughlin and Eli win a third before Rex and Sanchez win their first, the Giants will be firmly enshrined as the football gods in New York, and nothing Rex does after that, short of 3 straight Super Bowls, will ever change that.

Rex, it’s what you do, not what you say.

  34. Instead of Rex giving up sweets for Lent (like that really has worked!) he needs to give up making bombastic and ludicrous statements for those 47 days. Maybe if he is not always opening his mouth making crazy statements, he won’t follow up with the twinkies, dingdongs and hohos.

  35. As a Pts fan, i like Rex…. i really, really do. But SHUT UP! You arent winning the Super Bowl quickly… or in the future. Just stop!

  36. Rex is always telling us how much courage he has, how only he is willing to dare, how he’s got the guts to lay it out there.

Anyone can mouth off and make “guarantees” that aren’t honored the way “guarantees” are intended.

What Rex thinks is such gutsy behavior sounds a lot more like being a blowhard – than being an honorable man of unbreakable courage.

  37. Does he mean “quickly”….as in the evolutionary time clock where decades and centuries qualify as brief periods of time ?

  38. The only superbowl ring rex ryan will be getting is immitation ring you order online like the rest of the fans. Because he sure isn’t winning one. Hey heres an idea, How about you order the ring the steelers wons in superbowl 43! That would look good on you.

  39. When Rex became head coach, I really enjoyed his confidence and his bombastic nature, though frankly this is getting a little tiresome. We all know that winning a Super Bowl is as much about team solidarity, individual execution, staying healthy as a team and frankly good luck as it is good coaching. I think that Rex’s constant claims hurt his chances of keeping his job, and will turn him into a non-factor for other coaching opportunites

  40. Oh Rex,just stop talking and produce! The last few Superbowl winning coaches said very little but just quietly kept winning week after week. Rex has tremendous entertainment value! He cracks me up. Everyone needs a class clown.

  41. Actually I think fans are over reacting to this one.

If Rex doesn’t openly express an intent to win a Super Bowl for the Jets they might as well fire him right now.

Guaranteeing a Super Bowl is still stupid – but making clear winning one in the short term is your goal is expected.

  42. I don’t understand what everyone is getting all upset about? You people hate Rex because he says in public what every other coach says inside there locker room.. What is he supposed to say “gee guys I kindve hope we can win a few games here and there”… This story is a joke and you morons commenting like he’s talking out of context are even bigger jokes
