New Bears G.M. Phil Emery spoke at his introductory press conference about building the Bears through the draft.

But there are competing interests in Chicago. It feels like another “win or else” season for Lovie Smith. Defenders like Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, and Julius Peppers are deeper into their 30’s. This group may only have so many runs left in them, and there has to be a temptation to find quick fixes.

“The bottom line, and Phil knows this, if there is someone we want -- and it makes sense -- money is not going to be an issue,” Bears Chairman George McCaskey said Thursday via the Chicago Tribune.

We’ve heard other suggestions in Chicago that the Bears are ready to make a splash on the open market.

This is becoming a running theme on PFT, with the Bucs and Cowboys among the other teams that seem particularly eager for free agency to start.
