Seriously this is a tough call. If he comes back with a contract and plays like he is capable of playing , he is a tremendous asset. Takes two with him on every play. Remember he made 2 Super Bowls. I pick on Reid every day with his bad decesions but,........He must be bought back/ he also makes the other receivers a bigger threat. He's a kid that acted like a kid. My opinion is...when he's paid he will be what he is supposed to be....a tremendous threat on every play.

jbalog - Like I said...as long as we're winning Super Bowls, you can have all the miracles in the meadowlands that you can hang your hat on. I'm willing to bet, you'd trade every single miracle and every single regular season win you've ever witnessed over the Giants for just one lonely SB win.

By the way, we went 10-6 in 2010. How is that a bad year for us but the years that you went 6-10 (05'), 8-8 (07'), 9-7 (08') and 8-8 (11') you only count those as having one bad year for the Eagles???

I'll give you this much....you Eagles' fans really have the numbers game nailed down to soothe yourselves from the pain you must feel every time Big Blue locks down another Lombardi.

And Jakek2,

congrats on your superbowl wins, but don't kid yourself that you could care less if you lose to us in the regular season because as you know, the Giants lost to the Eagles very often for several years and usually in embarrassing fashion. Just like you remember your super bowl wins, you also remember that it took one game at the new stadium for a "new miracle at the meadowlands." You'll remember that just as long as the superbowl wins and if Giants fans aren't bothered by it, they surely don't show it well because you guys HAAAAATE the eagles.

I know you are just going to come back at me about how we can't win a superbowl like everyone else, but I know that in the past 11 years, the eagles have had one season where there were games that i couldn't watch because i didnt want to see them get obliterated (the post superbowl year). Every other year they have been in the playoffs or can still get into the playoffs in week 17. So, the way I see it, I can say that with football being my passion, I can actually say that for the better part of 11 years, I have enjoyed watching my Eagles play and compete. In the last 11 years, just one bad year. The Giants, well there was 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2010.

Eagles fan here. A lot of you are basing his performance off of his headlines and box scores, but all in all, he will be fine. Things to consider...

- He held out. Everyone says that makes you a headcase, but the man wasn't getting paid. Djax had good reason to be upset because he deserved a new contract, but the Eagles had other plans last offseason like their little spending spree and giving Vick that lucrative contract. The hold out affected timing and practice and took his heart out of it for parts of the season.

- He was banged up good portion of the season. When he wasn't banged up, the entire WR corps was banged up so defense could pay attention to him. Considering there was a knee injury and DJax's strength is speed, he kind of loses the burst that separates him from cornerbacks. He's only "okay" at route running, so not as much seperation as usual. Just not as strong of a target as other options on the offense at many points in the season.

- Vick was hurt for majority of the season and he played through a lot of it. We had a beyond banged up Vick throwing the ball and Vince Young throwing the ball. Not as effective as previous years.

-I'm also going to take on the stats argument for all these concerns about how he is “done.” McCoy had a breakout season. His workload continued to increase (averaged about 20 touches per game in 2011 vs 17 in 2010 ). The ball was also spread around a ton this season. Look at stats below.

DJax - 58 rec, 104 targets, 961 yds, 4 TDs
Maclin - 63 rec, 97 targets, 859 yds, 5 TDs
Celek - 62 rec, 96 targets, 811 yds, 5 TDs
Avant - 52 rec, 81 targets, 679 yds, 1 TD
McCoy - 48 rec, 69 targets, 315 yds, 3 TDs + 273 carries, 1309 tds, 17 TDs

Now this brings me to a few other stats I want to point out.

Target % by year:
2011: 18.7%
2010: 17.2%
2009: 21.1%
2008: 19.9%

Donovan was throwing the ball in 2008 and 2009. DJax was force fed. 2010 brought a breakout season for maclin, mccoy, and vick returned to form. There were more options than in the McNabb years. Eagles no longer needed to rely on DJax to win games (ill get to 2011 in a second) and as a result, his numbers dropped. It didn’t mean he got worst.

You want to bring up his hands? I’ve got those numbers too.
completion % (completions divided by targets)

2011: 56%
2010: 48%
2009: 52%
2008: 51%

I don’t have the numbers for drops and I don’t know how many of these passes hit him in the hand. All in all though, I’d say you can give and take enough that there isn’t going to be drastic fluctuation from year to year. By these numbers, his hands were better this year than any of his previous years. That doesn’t mean he has good hands by any standard, but considering he had solid numbers for previous years, the “bad hands” argument is ineffective.

All of a sudden I am spending a lot more time writing this than I want, so I’m going to summarize the rest. DJax’s numbers from previous years are inflated because of the big play. His hurt leg this year reduced the big play for him so his yardage suffered for it. His TDs also dropped as a result. Taking all of this stuff into consideration, his numbers were fine. He was a pain because he didn’t know if the eagles wanted him since he wasnt getting a new contract even though he had outperformed it. Give him his money and he will be fine.

I also said earlier that the Eagles didn’t need to rely on DJax to win games in recent years. Yeah, I know we went 8-8, but there were tons of problems this season, Vick hurt, first year D-coordinator putting Asomugha in zone for half the season, very shotty tackling by the secondary and LBs, and even through all of that they blew 5 4th qtr leads. Reason? Turnovers. We were in the bottom 5 in turnovers and you lose games because of turnovers. Don’t know what to tell ya about last season. Meanwhile, everyone who thinks the Eagles are done need to look into the last 4 games. There was some serious gelling and both the offense and defense finished in the top 10 in several categories. You must be oblivious if you think the Eagles are done because of one bad year.

lbdpatch - Unlike Eagle fans who throw parades when they beat the Giants, us Giants' fans can care less about your moribund team. As long as we are hoisting the Lombardi in February, you can continue beating us in the regular season with Vince Young or Young MC for all we care!! HAHAHAHA!! Losers you are!!

How's this for more truth serum....if we repeat, you will refer to this little era of NFL football as the Giants' DYNASTY years!!!!

"Whether about leverage or not, you can be sure Mr Agent will be saving these quotes…"

Its obvious to me that the Eagles are setting themselves up to be the "good guys" when negotiations break down between management and Jackson/Rosenhaus. They'll say "See, we tried to get a deal done, but DeSean and his agent were being unreasonable".

As for the Eagles having "learned their lesson" from the T.O. debacle, I don't think so. Yes, its supposed to be a two way street, but is it? If the player "outperforms" his contract (however you define that) the team is supposed to tear it up and give him more money, but if he stinks the joint up and "underperforms", is the player supposed to give the team back some money? In DeSean Jackson's case, its debatable if he was even worth the $600,000 he was paid in 2011, let alone the millions that he wanted.

You might be everything wrong in football in one post. Desean earned being a second round pick and the second round contract. I’ll believe you can outplay your contract and demand to renegotiate the day a player gives money back for not playing up to their contract. To his credit, Desean has lived up to his contract. Now he gets the contract based on his concussions and okay production. TO willingly signed a Eagles deal after forcing his way out of SF and the trade to BAL. Proudest day in franchise history telling him to stay home. If you don’t want the deal, don’t sign it. If you don’t want to go over the middle for garbage money, go load a garbage truck instead. And we wonder why players feel entitled when fan make this argument for them.
--------
Way wrong man. The Eagles played DJax this year. Plain and simple. If you recall, he was holding out and not reporting to camp. Then the Philly brass gave him the old "Come to camp... we will work out this contract thing face to face... we promise". Then he reports to camp thinking they are going to do him a solid and give him a raise and they just hang him out to dry... all season long. They could have easily altered the existing contract to give him a couple million extra to show their appreciation... instead of giving all that money to a hobbled Steve Smith coming over from a rival team. Way to take care of your own Philly.

Then you say he can now get a contract based on OK production and his concussions?? You're cold. The guy risks brain damage going out there to play after multiple concussions and you are going to hold it against him.

And by the way, you're right. When a player underperforms on their contract they don't give money back. They just simply get cut.

Say what you want but the guy was a game changer and top 5 receiver his first 3 seasons. You say he doesn’t go over the middle? How many concussions did he get? The Eagles wanted the kid to play for 600k on his garbage 2nd round rookie contract and risk injury? They got a 600k receiver. You get what you pay for. End of story. He was already underpaid his first 3 years. If he had underperformed or been injured they would have cut him in a heartbeat. It’s a two way street. The Eagles should have learned their lesson from the T.O. fiasco.

Your argument is garbage. These NFL contracts are really handshake deals that can be broken at any time. Question, what's the difference between a player demanding to Renegotiate & a team cutting, releasing or demanding a player take less money to stay?

So what team in their right mind would give us ANYTHING for a DeSean Jackson who, because he was franchised, remains tied to a deal with just one more year.

Doesn't compute. Unless he has a long-term deal he's made himself untrade-able given his actions last season.
