New Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman says he hasn’t joined the staff of a team in need of a major overhaul. Instead, he says, he thinks there’s already a lot of talent in Miami and that all the Dolphins need is a couple of players to put them over the top.
“I watched the tape, and I don’t think we’re that far away,” Sherman told the Miami Herald. “We’re missing a couple of pieces here and there but I think we have a chance to build upon what [General Manager] Jeff Ireland has put together here. After watching the tape, I think we get a couple of pieces here and there, I think we’ll be close.”
If one of the pieces the Dolphins add is a healthy Peyton Manning then Sherman is right. If one of those pieces is Matt Flynn -- and Flynn turns out to be a very good NFL starter and not just a career backup who had one spectacular game at the end of the season -- then Sherman is right. But if the Dolphins don’t get the quarterback position right, then it’s hard to see how Sherman could be right that the team is only a couple pieces away.
The good news for Sherman is that owner Stephen Ross has made clear that he’ll spend what he has to spend to get the right piece in place at the quarterback position.
