Getty ImagesThe Chiefs essentially decided to sign Stanford Routt over trying to re-sign cornerback Brandon Carr to agree to a long-term deal.
One big benefit to Routt’s contract: Now the Chiefs can use the franchise tag on wide receiver Dwayne Bowe.
Before the Routt deal, it appeared the Chiefs had a tough decision to make regarding whether to tag Carr or Bowe. We’d argue Carr is a better player overall than Routt, but his relatively low pricetag made his deal worthwhile. Brandon Flowers, Routt, and Javier Arenas make a fine top-three cornerback lineup for the Chiefs.
Kansas City obviously had a good idea what Carr was looking for in a contract. Routt likely wanted much less and the Chiefs must not have believed the difference in the two players was too great. The Chiefs may have been hesitant to pay two cornerbacks huge money after already rewarding Brandon Flowers.
The Chiefs have a huge amount of salary cap space, so it should be easy to tag Bowe. A long-term deal could be tough to put together quickly. A one-year contract will give Bowe motivation to play his best again in 2012; motivation has been an issue at times during his career.
This news should make Vincent Jackson, Brandon Lloyd, and other potential free agent receivers smile. If Bowe and Wes Welker are off the market, there will be a greater demand for the receivers that do make it to free agency.

This is the best part of this whole thing. Carr is better than Routt, but I don’t think the drop off in talent is that huge. Bowe, when paired with a decent QB, is a legitimately great receiver. He may not be that fast, but he’s physical and can break tackles after a catch.
KC can’t let Bowe get away, he’s been dominant at times for them. Bears should be making a play for VJax – they need WRs
good news.
now that we have an offensive coordinator, we may actually try and bring an offense designed before 1980 to the table.
-lost J. Charles in week 2
-best WR trio in KC as far as i can remember
-coordinator (and Haley) decide to run it 5th most, next to last in TD rushes, and 27th in yards per carry
-a QB that went to the pro-bowl the year prior under Charlie Weis, with 27 / 7 TD to INT ratio and a 94 QBR
-old coordinator (and Haley) call 27th most passes per game, most of them are screens and swings on 3rd and long because they ran the ball on 1st and 2nd downs 95% of the time
now that the Haley/Muir combo are gone, we might see some offense.
I hope the Chiefs get Bowe locked up long term, and then tag and trade Carr for picks or players at other positions of need.
Come to the Jets. Let’s win this thing in 2012 baby! Woooooooo.
I hope that’s not true. I was getting used to the thought that he’d land in San Fran.
ugh…the Chiefs? lol…good luck telling ANYONE that your contract wasnt about money, and money alone.
The Chiefs wont win a playoff game during this entire contract length. Bad decision if you EVER want a ring.
Go we’re ever don’t matter
I understand it’s a hard decision to choose between Bowe and Carr, but the replacement is Stanford Routt? Seriously?
I used to love watching the Chiefs get free first downs because the guy literally bear-hugs WRs for pass interference calls.
Hopefully Bowe will be as he was in 2010, not in 2011. The Pittsburgh game on Sunday Night Football sticks in my mind.
Put your hands UP, Bowe!!!
So why exactly “should” Bowe stay put? Because the Chiefs can tag him?? I’m guessing he’ll still try for a long term deal
AKA The Bowe N Arrow
watch out
Bowe is an animal…The Skins need an animal….So logic would say, get the animal!
It also significantly drives up the price on Stevie Johnson, and makes it all the more likely he’ll hit the market too. Someone will overpay for the guy if the Bills don’t.
Bowe could be the next Hakeem Nicks if he didn’t drop so many important balls.
He is an excellent #2 corner. He will get his penalties down. Its a great signing because of the value. With a good draft and maybe another good signing, they could become relevant again.
Agh, great. There goes my dream of Bowe in midnight green.

I couldn’t possibly have read this correctly otherwise I would have understood an EAGLES fan giving advice on how to win playoff games and…hold on, I just laughed soda on my computer, super bowl rings!!
yea i agree, no egirls fans have any right talking about another team with a bad signing. howd asomugha work out this year? oh right cruz s*** all over him
as for the signing – routt wasnt a great number 1 but whos to say that he wont be a very solid number 2 in KC? oh right eagles fans

Trust me. You don’t want him. C-Web makes those bigger, slower WRs disappear (see Plax, Dez, Roddy White, Greg Jennings and Crabtree). If you want a serious chance at dethroning us, look for speed. Jackson has it but a stiff breeze puts him out for 4 weeks.
There really is no hope for the Chiefs.
Bring Carr to the Vikings. We can use all of the help we can get in the secondary.

talking about super bowl rings …that’s hilarious. hahaha lol too funny.
This gives the Chiefs leverage now. Route is not a Pro Bowl player but neither is Carr. Teams like the Raiders get desperate and give these players like Route big money when they are not worth it. Signing him for minimal money is better than singing Carr for to much.
I would suggest this is going to make Marques Colston smile more as well.
1 problem…
KC doesn’t need value given how low their payroll is… they shouldn’t “value” a bargain, they should “value” BALLERS and nothing else… p.s. go get Soliali now
Clark H. and Scott P. do a masterful job of managing Clark’s money. But unfortunately that tightwad mentality is what keeps the Chiefs from ever being a super bowl contender. I believe 1969 was their last visit to the big dance. Its been a long 43 years for true blue Chiefs fans.
Just so we’re clear: there are people saying 7 million a year for STANFORD ROUTT is a good deal? Did Al Davis rise from the dead and take over the Chefs?

Slow? He’s a 220 beast that runs a 4.4 40 and can break tackles.
As a chief fan this ok. Carr wants to much money we get a capable replacement while subtracting that said player from a divison rival. By the way guys Carr has only had 1 good yr before this yr he was a big time question mark. Franchising bowe is a no brainer u don’t give up ur no 1 wr for ur no 2 cb. Now I agree time to open the check book and get us a couple olineman a rb, a nt, and a MLB.
