The Packer stock is nothing more than a piece of paper to put on your wall to show you support your team. There are a few little perks to owning this piece of paper but nothing major, it is still just a keepsake.

The part most people get confused about is where the money goes. The money can only be used for renovations on the stadium, not for player salaries.

As a Packer fan yes I bought this "stock" and it looks good framed on my wall along with other sports memorabalia I have. I also know I have no real rights in the everyday operation of the Packers. It was just my way of supporting my favorite team.

If you feel the need to post on this site how stupid I am for purchasing this "stock" have a blast.

stellarperformance – wrong…you DONT all know its not stock…that is the point.

Really?

Did I miss the post from a Packer fan that knowingly purchased the "stock" saying "this is a fraud. I want my money back. I want to speak with my congressman."

I don't think I did. You, my friend, still don't get it. And to remain focused on something like this only tells me you are obsessed with anything anti-Packer. It's a big club. Jealousy breeds contempt.

stellarperformance – wrong…you DONT all know its not stock…that is the point. The vanity plates are sold as just that…plates….this worthless stock is sold with a meaningless charter, touted as a form of veiled ownership which a large majority of Packer fans haven’t the acumen to see it for what it really is…. a ruse of ownership to get $275 bucks out of each that purchases it…pathetic! If it was sold as a fake certificate of ownership and everyone understood that clearly, i would have no problem with it.

In other words....you have NFL-themed vanity plates on your car.

golonger, Do you understand the NFL's grandfathering rules? In the 1980's, the NFL stipulated team ownership as "a limit of 32 owners of one team and one of those owners having a minimum 30% stake". Since the Packers didn't have a true owner, and had been in the league for over 60 years, they were grandfathered in. The alternative was to disband the Packers. Why would you want that?

And "opening your books" and "selling shares" are both byproducts of being publicly owned. Which your favorite team cannot be, but the Packers are. Yes, it is that simple, even for the simple-minded.

"It has a little something to do with the Packers being required to open their financial books to the public because they are the only publicly-owned American pro sports team."

It has nothing to do with that at all....they were essentially grandfathered in.....and for some reason, the rest of the NFL has allowed it, mainly due to the nostalgia associated. It isn't as simple as "opening your books" to be able to sell "shares". The NFL knows that without the current structure remaining, the Pack will be out of GB....so, they essentially left them alone...if it was that simple, all teams would be selling "shares"

There appears to be a lot of ignorance regarding why the Green Bay Packers can sell shares and the other NFL teams can't. It has a little something to do with the Packers being required to open their financial books to the public because they are the only publicly-owned American pro sports team. When the other teams open their books, then maybe they can sell their own shares. Good luck with that. It's a team choice. If your team is unwilling to make that sacrifice, it's not the Packers fault. Complaining about other fans' treasures because you can't have your own is petty indeed.

Why the hell do they call it stock (instead of simply donation). All the caveats mentioned above say that it resembles nothing like a real stock.
—————————————-

Except that you do get to participate in voter activities, such as the annual shareholder’s meeting at Lambeau field where you get to meet players, staff, coaches and tour the facilities. You also get to vote on the board of directors in addition to other topics.
---------------
Ok so you get to vote. You don't get dividend. You can't transfer it (i.e. no profit). It's not under umbrella of SEC rules. No tax deduction.
Infact, the point #1 from the press release says:
1. Stock in the Packers does not constitute an investment in “stock” in the common sense of the term.
So, it's an insult to common sense to call it stock instead of memorabilia or donation.
If you want to help your franchise you are better off buying some well performing hi tech stock sell it for profit and donate the profit to the team and still take care of your personal/family needs. You can print the Packer non-stock, stock.
This of course is only applies if you are already met all your personal financial needs.

Still respect the Giants team and their tradition (and disrespect the Vikings for their lack of same) but wow, obviously the Jets aren't the only New Jersey team with plenty of loudmouths.
My only comment on the continuing stock "debate" is that I'm happy that my team is financed by a lot of people with $250 to spare rather than by one guy with billions to spare. See, this is part of the reason that the Packers are the nation's - and the world's - team. And I think that even the trolls here understand that on some level. And are a little bit jealous of it too.

Meatduck -I've got a pretty simple explanation for you (and I'm an Atlanta native).

1. Your team just won the superbowl. Congrats. So why are you ragging on everyone like a sore winner? Particularly when you call out Packer fans for being classless and hypocritical - that's like being doubly classless and hypocritical.
2. You use an NFL message board to make personal attacks on the political climate of the State of an opposing team. Seriously? Get a life bro.

In all fairness to the Canadians, let's wait to see if any of them are so stupid as to buy this junk.

On a separate note, this will fund $143M for stadium renovation. What will the stock price be when they have to replace lambeau? I thought Goog was expensive.

For all those that claim that others buy worthless junk like jerseys, there are some of us that don't. We just enjoy the game without pretending to be someone else (by having their name on our back).

Please explain:

To my understanding the NFL won’t allow other teams to be publicly owned and the Packers are the only team “grandfathered” in on this issue.
It is also my understanding that because the Packers are publicly owned; they are allowed to sell stock (not real stock) publicly.

So my question is this, isn’t this unfair to all the other NFL teams that aren’t allowed to sell stock? I mean the Packers now have an INTERNATIONAL way of funding their team that NO OTHER TEAM IS ALLOWED TO DO (or am I wrong). If other teams can do this, they why don’t they?

This just seems unfair to me to the other 31 teams, thoughts?

You're absolutely correct. But if the Packers weren't able to do this, they would have blown town four decades ago. Despite this unfair advantage, the fans still look down their noses at the fans of every other NFL team.

How exactly are we being "...taken for a ride...?" We are offered the chance to buy stock and can decide for ourselves whether we want to buy it or not. Also, the decision whether or not to use public funds to renovate Lambeau is put to a public vote and again, we decide whether or not to allow that. Whereas, the only way minny can get such a thing done is to bypass the referendum. So, it actually sounds to me like you are the ones being take for a ride. Enjoy Metrodump 2.0!
