Listen, when Ray Rice “says he wants Peterson money ” or Flacco “says he wants Top 5 money”, you have to take it with a grain of salt. It’s not them who’s saying these things, it’s their agents. And can you blame them? THAT’S THEIR JOB! The agents job is to get as much for their client (and themselves) as they possibly can. This is part of something called a “ne-go-ti-a-tion”. You start high, the team says no, and you take it from there. The Ravens have always done a good job keeping their best players in house and knowing when to let certain good ones go. However this all works out, the Ravens will be contenders. My prediction: Rice gets tagged, Flacco signs at beginning of training camp, Webb gets 1st round tender, JJ is gone along with Grubbs, Redding, Evans, Cundiff, Foxworth, Ayanbedejo. Draft a OG to replace Grubbs.

I laugh at these football experts who want to compare an entire O Line to 1 RB. Of course 5 players are more important than 1 RB. Now tell me which O Lineman on the Ravens is more important than Rice? Tell me what individual player(s) on the entire Ravens team are more important than Rice? I’ll wait for your answer. Then you can tell me 1) How easy Ray is to replace 2) How much Ray is worth.

For the Bengals I think a move to try and pry Rice away from Baltimore makes sense on so many levels. Take Rice away from Baltimore’s offense and what’s left? He’s the reason Flacco can go down the field. Without him teams could drop 5-6 into coverage and dare Baltimore to run on them. Bet Flacco doesn’t get his “top 5″ money then.

But unfortunately, Mike Brown is as tight with money as Uncle Scrooge, and while CIN has the picks they don’t have the owner who can pull the trigger.

So likely what happens is Rice gets tagged and ends up threatening to hold out, but comes back and the Ravens are in contention for the AFC again.

I think Ray is awesome but is not worth that much money. Put Ray Rice on the Vikings and Adrian Peterson on the Ravens, and there would be no discussion.

You don’t win by running the ball. League rules forbid it. The ravens would be stupid to pay rice over improving their offensive line and linebackers, or getting a defensive end like mario williams or even the older Umenyora(sp?) to play opposite Suggs. I’d even take one of the many free agent receivers this year over worrying about paying rice. You can always replace a running back.

There’s a very SIMPLE SOLUTION to Rice’s quest and Flacco’s quest for more money …. And this would apply to all 32 teams
A. Pay them (Rice / Flacco / Osi and anyone else seeking pay raises or new contracts) a decent BASE salary
B. Load the contract with incentives
C. The teams buy standard insurance policies against the players being hurt – if they are injured to the point the player has to retire the policy pays off and the team is off the hook. And the player gets his money
D. The league allows this across the board and it brings everyone in under the salary caps because it’s all tied to performance

No one is going to slack off if they know that for every TD or sack or reception above a base amount is going to pay them more money.

However, there should be an independent arbitrator who determines the Base Number for each individual NOT the team.

I. E. Welker has averaged over 100 receptions but we all know he does have a potential knee problem so as an Independent aritrator I might set his base figure at 75 to 80 receptions and then pay say 25K for the next 10 receptions then maybe 50K for the next ten etc etc

Tie it all to PERFORMANCE then you would not have the problems like mentioned in Seattle above

That will get the players attentions!!!

When you’re running back averages over 5 yards per carry, then he probably deserves big money. (Deangelo Williams)… But, his offense only has him carrying the ball around 7 times a game, thus that is the reason he averages 52 yards a game.

Not the player, but the offense he is in… Good try tho, you guys have been trying to take cheap shots on Williams ever since he got his money.

When the Panthers get this offense down pat, I don’t think any defense will stop it… Williams/Stewart and Newton all average over 5 yards a carry, and Newton also throws it for 4000? Good luck stopping that.

These guys play hard til they get their money and then they ask themselves “why risk hurting myself now that I have all this money to spend??”

My guess would be the two guys who caught more yards than Rice in the regular season….

Bigger question is how will they replace is 2.8 yards per carry in the playoffs you know the 67,57, 32, 60, 67, and one total touchdown in the previous 5 playoff games. Yea those are 100 million dollar numbers….

He has been very good so pay him… but pay him as a running back, don’t give him CJ or AP numbers because those guys shouldn’t have what they have. Two best running backs in the game and they are far overpaid. Glad their teams spent 30 million to finish in 3rd place….

The Running Back position isn’t the same as it was in the 1980′s. Your starting running back isn’t even on the field for half of your offensive plays. Teams don’t want to use up 1/10th of their salary cap on that position. The Titans and Vikings are the only 2 teams to shell out big bucks to their running backs and neither team is going to make the playoffs anytime soon.

Look at all the teams that have used a 1st rounder on a RB over the past 6 years. Most of the guys aren’t even starting and if they are they realize the backup does just the same (NE, IND, PITT, BUF and many, many more) Those teams would have been better off selecting another player. Also, would you invest in a player that becomes over the hill at age 28? Putting your money in a running back is dumb logic.

You are so off base its ridiculous. I guess you missed the part where Ray Rice is an UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT. It’s not like he’s under contract and asking for a raise. He’s negotiating a contract that would keep him with the team. If anybody thought Rice was going to go back to playing for near the league minimum (500k is what he was making before) they are out of their minds.

Flacco is going into the last year of his rookie contract as well. And the Ravens approached him about a new contract, not the other way around. The Ravens owner last offseason made it known that he wanted Flacco locked up this offseason.

So, again its not like these guys are holding out or anything like that.

Rice has been solid. Unfortunately the current trend shows that RBs peak to get a payday and then production drops. I know how dangerous Rice can be but no way he’s worth Peterson money unless it was tied with incentives.

Thought it was interesting that Greg Schiano left Rutgers this particular season to become the head coach of a team in need of a speedster starter at RB which Blount’s aggressive style can complement. Doubtful it will happen, especially with the Ravens being able to franchise tag him, but if contract negotiations drag out I would not be surprised to start hearing talk about two firsts and a second from either this or the 2013 draft to secure Rice from the Ravens. The value of both the Bucs #5 selection and the Ravens own #29 selection would be more than enough to get talent starved Minnesota to move down two spots and add another late first selection (to an already late first caliber pick in their high second rounder). It would also be enough for the Ravens to jump up and grab Trent Richardson, a la the Colts trading Marshall Faulk to go up and get Edgerrin James. If I’m the scouting staff and management team in Baltimore, I’m working on the pros and cons of this deal and which individual would bring more to the table and be a better investment. Off the top of my head, I would think Richardson could be locked down longer for much less than a player with some wear. Food for thought…

In response to one of the earlier commenters…about wallace going to the Bengals. Wouldn’t it be something to see them land him and steal away Rice somehow. Plus a solid draft to shore up their o-line and defense. Man, the Bengals could be scary. JMO. Two scenarios I want for the Superbowl, if not next season, then very soon: Lions vs. Texans and Lions vs. Bengals. Just think those would be both great and entertaining, plus a team that has never won the big game would finally win one! As a general fan of the game I think that would be awesome!
