Stanford Routt chooses the Chiefs

Dwayne Bowe, Mike Mitchell, Stanford Routt AP

Every once in a while, we throw a dart that bounces off the ceiling, ricochets off some dude’s head, and hits the target.

Earlier today, we reported that cornerback Stanford Routt would be picking a new team soon, and I guessed that he’d pick the Chiefs.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, he has.  The source says it’s a three-year deal worth just under $20 million.

That’s less than $5 million more than Routt ultimately earned for one year in Oakland.

Routt had visited the Bills, Chiefs, and Bengals since being cut by the Raiders.

Hmm. I really like Carr, but if he walks and Routt is the #2 behind Flowers, I can’t complain too much. Routt was always a decent #2. Romeo is a good enough coach that maybe he’ll stop the ridiculous penalties.

There’s always been something about the team atmosphere in Oakland that seems to encourage stupid penalties.

now he can produce 1st downs for the opposing offense on 3rd an longs for another team with all his dam P.I. calls. he sure wasnt worth the money to stay with us, but im glad he went to a team we play twice a year and knowing his weaknesses will be great for a QB that practiced against him for over half a season.

Oakland paid him WAY too much. Right decision to cut him. Personally, I’d rather have Carr than Routt, but that’s the Chiefs’ decision.

He’s fast. But seriously, unless you’ve watched the Raiders, he is terribly overrated. He loses his man and commits penalties to compensate. Also tied for second in the NFL in TDs allowed.

Stanford Routt is a solid number 2 for sure. He did have his penalties as a number 2, but nothing like last year. I think he’ll rebound nicely in KC.

That being said, the Raiders fan in me does like seeing him in that position for the Chiefs more than Carr. I think its a slight downgrade, but I expect Routt to play well, unfortunately.

You’ll be lucky to even have a close game with KC this year.

We don’t know what goes on behind the scenes. Carr may not want to play in K.C. He’s from Detroit I believe. Who knows maybe he wants to play for the Lions. There’s a lot of Unknowns right now. Also, if contract talks aren’t going anywhere with him currently. You have to cover yourself. Which I believe is going on right now. They signed Routt in-case they lost Carr. Had KC waited any longer Routt would be on another team. We wouldn’t have a solid back up. For the Raider fan’s. Watch out, Romeo will get him to play at a high level.

  34. yelix says: Feb 20, 2012 1:56 PM

I agree that he’s overrated, but he always seemed to get game-breaking interceptions against the Chiefs. Hopefully he can do the same to his old team, because intercepting Carson Palmer isn’t exactly rocket science.

I love when former Raiders come to KC and play better than they did in Oakland. Al Davis thought Marcus Allen was done, but he came back and had 5 really good years in KC, and burned the Raiders regularly.

  35. southtexasraider says: Feb 20, 2012 1:57 PM

we need to TAG branch, maybe even sign Carr or finnegan and we have an improved secondary grouped with second-year men Chekwa and DVD. Routt just had toooo many P.I.s with 18 penalties and gave up 8+ TDs to lead the league.
We can definately do better than that mess.

AFC west receivers will be irritated by how their jerseys look after playing the Chiefs.
All stretched out and misshapen from the iron grip of Stanford Routt.

In all fairness, it often looked like he was grabbing on trying not to fall down while he got his feet untangled…

The best money you spend will frequently be the money you keep in your pocket. I wish Mr. Davis had learned that…

  38. jgrange says: Feb 20, 2012 2:06 PM

I’m a Raiders fan and one of the few who actually liked Routt. His physical play off the line with his bump and run and some hand checking beyond the 5 yard mark really got him into trouble with these new rules for coverage corners. He can’t really play to this strengths because defenders are now handcuffed by the new rules. In any event, I thought he came a long way. He was a track star first, football player maybe in college. He was molded into a promising cover corner and did pretty well when Nnamdi was here.

The Raiders front 7 did him no favors either so you can say he was bad or this and that but just remember good coverage relies on pressure and the Raiders barely brought any of that. I can forgive his penalties and I think Chiefs fans will too. He should improve on those just from the fact that the Chiefs defense (when healthy) is much better than the Raiders (as of right now and from last year’s performance).

I wish him well just not those 2 random weekends he plays us.

    ————————-
Look while I agree that it’s ridiculous to say the two wins in the division are guaranteed, the “we played hurt” thing falls on deaf ears in Oakland.

Jason Campbell – Out half the year. Even with Palmer, it took a serious adjustment.

Darren McFadden – Out half the year. Bush is nice, but no McFadden.

Jacoby Ford – Out 4 games or so.

Denarius Moore – Out several games.

Richard Seymour – Played half of the year with a horrible knee in which he didn’t practice all week because of the pain.

Janikowski – bad hamstring. Missed games and played hurt.

Matt Shaughnessy – Poised for breakout year, got hurt.

Every team had hurt players, and Oakland was riddled with them as well. That argument falls on deaf ears.

Carr won’t be signing with the raiders.

The raiders have 3.23 million dollars in cap space.

Carr was looking for about 10 million a year from the chiefs.

    Simple do the math.

THE RAIDERS DON’T HAVE CAP ROOM.

Yeah, the Raiders had a ton of injuries as well. As much as I hate the Raiders, I love that the Chiefs/Raiders rivalry is coming back a little bit, because both teams have a shot at making the playoffs next year.

I bet one of the two games will be a prime time game next year.

Hmm, guess Carr is as good as gone now, he should cash in big time.

So who the hell is playing in Oakland’s secondary now? Routt, Washington, and Aso have all left. Chris Johnson is their #1 CB? I thought he was really bad last I heard. They also have Tyvon Branch on the move and Huff may be getting the axe. Yikes!

  46. 1andonlykingp says: Feb 20, 2012 2:28 PM

    bunjy96…

KC has alot of cap space, but do you really think they are going to invest a boatload of money in 3 CB’s.

They have needs in other areas that need to be addressed. The money they would spend to keep Carr could be used to bring back Bowe, who is a bigger need for them.

  47. wwwmattcom says: Feb 20, 2012 2:33 PM

I guess the worst part about the bills not getting routt is now we have to use a draft pick on a cb. You can coach a guy out of interfering with wr. Too bad the chiefs are a mess on offense. The truth is routt did not want to face tom Brady twice a year. Scared. Phillip rivers tim tebow and Carson palmer seem much easier to handle

  48. raiderstotheship says: Feb 20, 2012 2:37 PM

As a raider fan im more then thrilled to see him go to kc. Im not guaranteeing 2 wins, but he is a below average starter, there is a reason CHRIS JOHNSON beat him out for a starting job in routts 4th year! But he’s a penalty magnet, overpaid, and now carson knows who to pick on all game, especially with dhb, jacoby, and denarius running by him. Grab away!

  49. mobuccsfan says: Feb 20, 2012 2:38 PM

Maybe Carr could come on down to Tampa he would be much better than Biggers, Mack, Lewis and Talib, as well as Barber, Barber is too old and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him retire this year, finally. Speaking of Talib, where is the mention of his trial? Isn’t supposed to take place in March? I think that would be interesting to see what is going on with that. Even if he does get off, I think the Buccs should cut him. I would take a chance on Carr and possibly even Finnegan, if the team is committed to spending a little cheddar and Schiano can get Finnegan and the entire team to be disciplined. I think that is his biggest challenge, that and forcing the Glaziers to spend money! Pipe Dream-Draft Richardson, trade for Osi, get Carr and Finnegan, get Mike Wallace or Vincent Jackson, somehow, one way or another and draft more O-and D-Line depth and secondary depth.
Not sure the best LBs out there in FA, so hopefully land a star in the bottom rounds of draft or pickup a solid role player, who would surely be better than the garbage that was on the field last year.

That is this Buccsfan’s Pipe Dream! Hey, one can dream, right? I think if all of those or most of those moves were to happen, Tampa could get to 8-8 next year and battle for the South for 3-5 years, as well as the NFC. Keywords are if and could, because really it will depend on what kind of schemes the new offense and defense roll out and if the team can finally become disciplined and the Glaziers start spending. Wish they would just sell Manchester U or sell the Buccaneers to someone who wants to win!

  50. klutch14u says: Feb 20, 2012 2:39 PM

Lol all the Raider fans who announced Routt was the second coming of Asmouga are now clamoring and laughing at the Chiefs for picking up Routt for WHAT HE IS WORTH. News flash. Romeo Crennel knows his defense. Unlike Bresnahan, Crennel isn’t going to leave Routt on an island. And Routt will have help over the top unlike another overpaid under performing secondary man in Huff.

Chiefs got a slight downgrade in Routt over Carr

Oakland got a practice squad wife beater over Routt

    Chiefs win this one.

  58. villa41 says: Feb 20, 2012 3:28 PM

only time will tell waht the Chiefs really have in mind for Routt. I can say this, though. If Crennel and the Chiefs think this guy is anything more than a situational nickelback, then they don’t know as much defense as they think and they’re out of their minds. Speaking of being out of one’s mind, that’s the biggest problem with Routt. Forgot the fact he’s a marginal player who commits a lot of penalties to compensate for the fact he really isn’t that good. Routt’s a me first type of guy more interested in his own stats (or lack thereof) than a team player. Just watch the post game show after the San Diego game where he said the Raiders had a good defense. In what world did the Raiders (and this is coming from a life long Raider fan) have a good denfese this past season? I’m going to enjoy watching this joker get worked twice a year by the Oakland offense. Good riddance.

Routt comes from the record holding penalized team, of course he has some PI calls. So really what you trolls are saying is any guy on your team is a DA because based on the record books… It was a Pue jackson group effort to suck away a season where the West was so far down.

Enjoy the cellar because SD, Denver, and KC are only getting better, you know, because they all have a draft. I knew that Al Passing away couldn’t be real, he’s clearly still running the doomed ship.

Chef fans need to hold up on all the celebrating. Stanford Routt is not a very good CB. Any Raider fan who’s actually paid attention the last 5 or so years will tell you that. Our pass defense has been held together with duct tape and spit, even when Asomugha was there. We’ve been doing it with smoke and mirrors and doing it ineffectively, as our team defense stats will show. I’m not saying Routt was to blame for all of our pass defense troubles but he certainly wasn’t the bright spot, the one holding it together or trying to lead the way. He’s fast and he doesn’t know how to cover WRs in the NFL.

“Pass Interference on the defense number 26, the ball will be spotted at the spot of the infraction. Therefore the ball will be placed at the 24 yard line. Since it is pass interference, it is an automatic first down. Since is it first down, the offense will have the ball 1st and 10 at the 24 yard line. Please place 40 seconds on the play clock. The offense will have 40 seconds to snap the ball, or the offensive team will be charged with a penalty of a 5 yard infraction, unless they chose to use a timeout. If they do chose to call a timeout, they will be without a timeout for the remainder of the half. Since they wouldn’t have a timeout out, they would not be able to challenge a play. Unless the umpire upstairs chooses to challenge the play. All scoring plays are no automatically reviewed. Therefore they wouldn’t be allowed to challenge a non scoring play.”

These Packersaints fans are relentless. It’s not Stanford’s fault Hue Jackson decided to go mostly zone after week 5 or so. On top of that he had Matt Giordono as his safety help. You do the math.

All this Pass interference commentary is laughable. Its not Routt’s fault that Roger Goodell destroyed the game so that you cant touch the receiver. Nnamdi struggled this year, even Revis did because it is so ridiculously unfair to the defensive backs in this league.

Routt will excel where they play man to man and not some multiple zone crap.

Your idiot HC trades for a #2 QB, Mcdon’tlikethepadson wusses out every year. What was it? His toe or foot? Or was is dress the wrong color?

If KC doesn’t lose Charles, Moeaki, and Berry the go 10-6 and kill the division. But I’m over it, it’s okay, I got past this season the second it was over. But us KC fans are okay because KC has a future unlike Choakland.

No draft… This is beyond hillarious,! Not only do you typically not get much out of the top 5 rounds most teams get every year, but it takes 2-3 years for those rookies to actually develop. Welcome to the newest Ricky Williams Saints trade. Cellar Dwellers for a good 3-5 years. And by that time, likely after next year, Palmers gone. And for a 1st and 2nd rounder. You’re going to miss the playoffs with him on your team and you gave up so much for that. Total bonehead move by the franchise formally known as crap.

Each team in the west, except for you loser faiders, will be better. Depending on Tebow they will likely stay the same. SD or KC is the division lock next year and with KC playing the last place schedule vs. the 1st place schedule this past year, (something choke fans know nothing about) KC will likely be the winner.

You guys make it too easy…

In all reality, what we lost was the second man up on our 4 x 100 relay team.

It seems reggie does not care about having the fasest relay team, he cares more about players that can play, rather than players that can run fast.

Also for the comments about the hue jackson, and Raiders not knowing how to use Stanford….keep in mind this is the first move by a new head coach, who was a d-coord, who specialized in the secondary, and his first move was to cut Stanford. I guess he felt if Tebow could pick Routt apart, andybody could. He can’t hurt KC anymore then he hurt us…Not so much pass interference, as it was more illegal contact on 3rd and mile plays over and over again that kept giving the opponent first downs.. C-ya

radrntn, excellent point on D Allen being a defensive coach with plenty of experience managing secondaries. Yeah if anybody knows Routt isn’t going to work, it’s the new head coach. The Saints secondary he ran in ’09 wasn’t bursting with talent yet he was able to coach them up well enough that they made the SB-clinching INT against this generations best QB. If Routt can’t play for a coach like that, the dude can’t play.

I dont know if it is an EC/WC thing or I am really just out of touch with the nfl anymore but I have no idea who Stanford Routt is.

    ————————————-

It’s the ESPN effect. A lot of sports fans don’t know a thing about any team outside the North East thanks to that tabloid network.

Maybe the Chiefs signed him because they figure oakland will give them two first rounders for him.

Denarius Moore made his way into the starting line-up from roasting Routt alllllllllllll camp … watch for that to happen twice every year.
