jgo304, you have been unfairly thumbed down by many readers. I think it’s because of the “Tightwad Ted” comment. Everything you pointed out is spot on. Hawk was a particularly disastrous signing. I think Ted wound up bidding against himself on that one.

Did he honestly believe Hawks’ agent that people were beating the doors down to sign AJ? Even if that were true, fine, let them. We let the wrong LB go. Nick Barnett was, is, and always will be a better player, I don’t care how much older he is.

There isn’t going to be a pass rusher available at that spot that ISN’T a reach at that spot.

Konz might very well be available and that’s where he should be taken. Take Konz.

So you let go of Wells, you get Konz who is bigger and 10 years younger. Also cheaper than what Wells will want. You now have a great young line that will be together a long time. Sherrod(Newhouse?), Sitton, Konz, Lang, Bulaga – all young guys who will be together the next 8-10 years. You’re set. Frees up money as well if Ted wants to go after a FA pass rush.

I’m okay with letting him go. He is a bit undersized and GB going wide like they do allows him to flourish at his size. If he goes to a heavy run team, he’s gonna struggle.

I’m even okay with a sign and trade of Finely for that pass rush. 15-1 with him got us nothing, I’d much rather go 12-4 and win a SB or 2 because we have a more complete team.

Packers could let him go and hope they can draft the C from Wisconsin or get by with someone else, but as has been pointed out their draft should be all about defense. So I hope they find a way to keep Wells.
Juddstir, if you’re going to camp out on Packer stories please “try” to somehow acquire at least a little knowledge of the subject matter. As any educated person knows, Mark Chmura (note spelling) was gone long before Thompson arrived. Since the Packers traded Favre to the Jets, apparantly both parties felt that he was NFL worthy. I’ll admit I don’t know much about Kool-Aid, but from your comments it appears that you are drinking a lot of something much stronger than that.

Cullen Jenkins was not worth the money the Eagles paid him and would not have made a big difference for the Packers in 2011. People need to realize and get over that. He wasn’t a difference maker – he’s just another body. I’m surprised people are still bringing him up – he really made a huge difference in Philly, didn’t he?

As for Wells, I’m going to trust TT, the GM who brought home a Lombardi trophy by not overpaying veterans just because they made the Pro Bowl one year. Yeah, Thompson’s made a few mistakes, but everyone does. Youth and development over free agent bonanza money is the way to go (most of the time).

I’m so tired of these greedy players putting themselves before us. If Wells really cared about the team he’d take a pay cut to play for the greatest organization of all time. The prestige of the Packers is payment enough.

The Packers is a struggling team and they clearly need to pinch every penny they can because we’ve been told we can’t compete with other major cities (even though some haters keep telling me they’ve been top 10 in revenue for like two decades.) Our Packers are in so much trouble they have to sell pieces of paper and I am glad to fork over my $300 to pay for it. Who cares if I don’t have a job and my kids are starving. If the Packers say they are struggling, then I believe them. I put the team first and so should Wells and Driver!

The Packers are not now a team that can repeat after their flop in the playoffs. Get real Packer fans your no better than the DL and that stinks.
Having a good QB is fine, but with dropsy receivers one can not expect success.

Here’s the path to success for next season, if you happen to be looking:

Franchise Wells.
Trade or cut Grant, Peprah, Wynn, Neal, Wilson, Bush and Finley.

Go for Dline, safety (both), and oline in the draft, use FA for a top-end strong safety to replace Collins.

Maybe pick up a 5-7th rounder RB as a project guy behind the two young guys under Starks already.

Keeps Driver around to replace Finley’s drops, and the other TE’s are better blockers anyhow.

Crisis averted.

If you follow the raiders even somewhat closely you would know were in talks to cut all of richard seymours 7.5 mil salary this season and just give him his bonus. Kelly, huff, curry, chris johnson, and a couple other including palmer are going to be asked to reduce their salary and if not they will likely be cut. As for wimbley he has a 50 50 chance being with us since he wont take less. We are going to be going after plenty of FAs but most likely starting at corner with someone like tracey porter

He didn’t piss off Jenkins. He put his faith that Neal would replace Jenkins and he didn’t. GMs do that, they try to replace old with new. Sometimes it works out (Rodgers/Favre) sometimes not (Jenkins/Neal)

Yea and i honestly see us getting rid of most of them. The only one i could imagine them keeping is Wimbley. We got big young athletic tightends so Boss is expendable and we should probably do something with tommy kelly too. I wish we had the money too keep huff though.

Any offensive line help is needed though. The left side is sure’d up we just need the rest of it locked down. Wells would be a nice fit when it comes to scheme and ability.

Wells isn’t the best lineman on the Pack, but he is second best, after Sitton.

I usually agree that paying a 31 year old center that kind of money isn’t generally worth it, but the Packers have no other option at center and other needs to address in the draft.

The Packers are in the crappy position where a lot of guys on the team want superstar money because they won a Super Bowl and went 15-1 last season. Unfortunately, no one has the money to do that.

TT is going to have to cut losses around the team, it’s just a matter of doing it prudently and in the right areas.

I’d hate to see Wells leave, but if he is that bent out of shape for what happened in the past then the only way to keep him is pay him what he wants, top center dollars. No need to do that at this point. Wells’ problem is twofold. First, he’s good but not elite. Second, there is a lot of centers available in free agency this year. My guess is Thompson will use both of those to see what the market bears and it probably won’t bear what Wells now wants from Green Bay. Everyone gets mad at Thompson for not pushing the panic button and overpaying. He’s not going to do that.
