Following the 12 men on the field penalty called on the Giants late in the Super Bowl, Florio started banging the drum for the league to consider changes to the rule.

The Giants didn’t pull the move intentionally, but there is nothing stopping a team from sending 12 (or 15) defenders on a play late in the game to essentially waste time. There should be a mechanism in the rule that gives time back to the offense in late game situations.

The league wasn’t commenting on a possible change a few weeks ago, but Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reports the Competition Committee will consider adjusting the rule to prevent teams from artificially burning clock.

Cole cautions changing the rule could be “very hard.” While Tom Coughlin may have discovered plutonium by accident, some enterprising coach could try to use the maneuver if the league doesn’t close the loophole.
