Jimmy Clausen is candidate for release

Jimmy Clausen, Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith AP

The Panthers spent a boatload of money in free agency last year, and the bill has come due. While the team doesn’t have many key players to re-sign, Carolina needs to shed a lot of salary before the start of the new league year.

One candidate to be released, according to the Charlotte Observer, is Jimmy Clausen. The former quarterback of the future in Carolina was the No. 3 quarterback of the present behind Cam Newton and Derek Anderson in 2011.

He’s due a roster bonus of $923,000 in March, which is a lot of money for a No. 3 quarterback. It’s not crazy money if the Panthers are confident in Clausen’s ability to be a backup. Anderson is a free agent and the team could simply choose to elevate Clausen.

It will be a remarkably far fall from grace for Clausen if the Panthers let him go. Just two years ago, Clausen was viewed as a likely first round pick. He had a disastrous rookies season and was an afterthought last year. G.M. Marty Hurney may not want to admit his mistake on Clausen so soon.

If the Panthers do let Clausen go, perhaps the Broncos can sign him so he can say bad things about Tim Tebow to Mike Silver.

This guy should get a statue outside of BOA stadium, cause without no Jimmy there would be no Cam. All kidding aside, good luck Jimmy.

Candidate? I’d say he’s probably the front runner….good riddance!

    Signed,
    ALL Panthers fans

Haters can hate, but I always find it a little sad when a promising college player busts in the NFL.

  4. clayton43 says: Feb 22, 2012 11:38 AM

ahhaahaha.. ok last line was actually funny… it may have been the most humerous thing i have read in one of your articles since the site went corporate.

  5. mcjon22 says: Feb 22, 2012 11:39 AM

Clausen and Brady should sign with the same team then, so they can be 2nd and 3rd string respectively, and properly represent Notre Dame football.

  6. bigjdve says: Feb 22, 2012 11:39 AM

His rookie season was horrendous because there was not much to work with.

He got dropped in the fire, thus the reason that there is a new coach and the team had the first pick in the draft last year.

I have never been a Clausen fan but maybe he can do something good somewhere else.

Notre Dame. I see what you did there…. -_-

  9. flapjackdaddy says: Feb 22, 2012 11:41 AM

Um, Fox had enough of Clausen in 2010. I know that last line was said in jest, but still, that is probably the least likely destination for teh Jimmeh.

  10. haileli says: Feb 22, 2012 11:42 AM

He also seems to be a candidate for the minors. 3 TDs, 9 INTs, 52.5% completion percentage, 58.3 QB rating. Only two things are in his favor: his salary and the fact that Derek Anderson is the other option at the moment. Ech.

  11. drexelvol says: Feb 22, 2012 11:42 AM

They’ll just release him. He’s garbage and no one, save the Redskins, would want him.

  12. edgarcaetano says: Feb 22, 2012 11:45 AM

wasted draft pick. teams are crazy about their QB’s…

  13. cannonballdookie says: Feb 22, 2012 11:48 AM

Tough to succeed when you have QB career killer at head coach (John Fox). It would be nice to see him latch on somewhere else and maybe make his way back to becoming a starter because while it’s tough to make excuses for how bad he played, he was only a rookie on a limited roster and a limited playbook. Thank god for Cam though.

  14. adlent says: Feb 22, 2012 11:53 AM

I’m a little shocked at how quickly people write off quarterbacks on bad teams. How many rookie quarterbacks excel — especially on a team like the Panthers that, before the new CBA, spent two years NOT signing free agents?

If succeeding as a rookie was common, we wouldn’t be in awe over seasons put together by Roethlisberger, Bradford, Andy Dalton and Cam Newton.

Jimmy Clausen may have been overrated and could end up sucking, but we can’t judge that yet.

  15. thankheavenfornumberseven says: Feb 22, 2012 11:55 AM

Sounds like Clausen is in a real pickle.

  16. trbowman says: Feb 22, 2012 11:57 AM

If I were him I’d be hoping to get released.

Newton is locked in as the starter, Clausen can find a better opportunity elsewhere.

  17. teblows says: Feb 22, 2012 11:58 AM

It’s ok if Jimmy gets cut.. I mean , after all he still is the heir to the Pickle fortune.. so he has that to fall back on.. which is nice..

I don’t feel sorry for that cat at all.

  20. vexey says: Feb 22, 2012 12:05 PM

In his defense, he was dropped into an atrocious situation. John Fox knew his contract wasn’t going to get extended before the season started, Steve Smith didn’t want to be there anymore, our defense was worse than it was this year (believe it or not), the list goes on.

That said I don’t think he showed any flashes of decent quarterback play either so I won’t go far enough to suggest he should be anything but a backup

  21. firstpitchslam says: Feb 22, 2012 12:06 PM

Another Notre Dame bust (I’m looking at you too, Brady). Why won’t people learn that everything there is overhyped.

  22. elmaxoh says: Feb 22, 2012 12:11 PM

He wasn’t that bad in pre-season this year .

  23. brenenostler says: Feb 22, 2012 12:13 PM

Clausen was the main reason John Fox didn’t get re-signed in Carolina. Why would Fox want him on his team now?

  24. nineroutsider says: Feb 22, 2012 12:14 PM

The more important story here is that the Panthers, who aren’t a very good football team, have salary cap issues. If I were a Panthers fan I’d be hot about that and not overly concerned with a backup QB. Do Panther fans even notice that? Besides Newton, the Panthers didn’t do a great job last year…giving everyone and their mom fat contracts. Good luck in that division, they better learn how to manage the cap and improve their roster or they aren’t going anywhere…again.

  25. pilot2011 says: Feb 22, 2012 12:16 PM

1st down- fumble the hand off, fall on it.

2nd down- throw it out of bounds

    3rd down- 10 yard sack

    punt- return for td

    …repeat

man 2010 was painful to watch.

  27. jimbo75025 says: Feb 22, 2012 12:25 PM

Face it-neither Claussen or Anderson is really a fit for the offense Carolina is running with Cam Newton. They would be better off going out and getting a backup who is at least a bit mobile.

This being said-always hated the Claussen clan as knew Casey in school and he was truly arrogant for a QB who was marginal at best. Jimmy never had a chance in Carolina though-maybe he gets lucky and gets a second chance to at least become a decent backup somewhere else. If nothing else at least there are no more Claussen brothers coming along.

  28. someidiotfromouthereintheprojects says: Feb 22, 2012 12:33 PM

carolina would be smart to go ahead and release him. it would be an admission that the whole clausen thing was a mistake. there’s no need to let it drag out any longer. it doesn’t take a long period of time to see whether a guy has “it” or doesn’t have “it.” when you get a qb that is a bust, it isn’t unusual, it is the norm. you fix it by trying again on another guy until you find the right guy. new coaches, new teams, and new environments don’t “fix” a guy that can’t play.

    @nineroutsider,

Other than Newton, nobody had a good season for the Panthers? So not only are you a Niner outsider, you are a NFL outsider as well?

The Panthers had Williams/Stewart/Newton all rush for over 700 yards last year… Thats the first time that’s ever happened in the NFL.

Steve Smith had one of his best years ever… Shockey and Olsen had great years.

Defense is the Panthers problem and that was because of IR… Chris Gamble was a top 5 shut down corner. But you’re right, the Panthers don’t have any talent.

  33. gtthom86 says: Feb 22, 2012 12:40 PM

When clausen was coming out for the draft a few years ago, as a bills fan desperate for a qb i wanted him at number 9.

just so happens i was working with a girl at that time who had just graduated from notre dame and volunteered/managed/did something to help out the foot ball team when went to school there. she told me multi stories of what a complete and total entitled d-bag clausen was – and how he was often the but of jokes from other guys on the team. needless to say it was a huge sigh of relief when the bills passed on him, and then not a surprise at all to see him fall so far in the draft.

anyway i wouldn’t feel sorry for this dude. once a d bag, always a d bag

    ====================

Tim Tebow would be a good fit to back up Newton. He plays a similar game as Newton, just 100 times worse.

Maybe he can go there in 2013 after he gets exposed this coming season.

  35. pkrjones says: Feb 22, 2012 12:46 PM

I’d welcome him in GB where he can get some coaching and not have the high expectations. 3rd stringer in ’12 learning the offense and re-
learning how to win, backup in ’13 for the defending Superbowl Champs.

  36. thatdudewiththemarauder says: Feb 22, 2012 12:55 PM

Jimmy will be in DC after he is released. He will be the backup to whoever the SKINS bring in to be the starter. I don’t think Jimmy is done. He just needs the right coaching. John Fox didn’t do him any favors either. HTTR!

49ers catch lightning in a bottle this past season and you are bagging on the Panthers? The 9ers have been garbage almost the entire time the Panthers have been in existence. Oh yeah, and one of our 2 wins in 2010 was against your 49ers, so thanks for almost taking us out of the Cam Newton pick. You guys could have beaten us like everybody else so us fans didn’t have to sweat Buffalo losing more games than us.

Hurney will get us under the cap and we will be fine.

  39. snowpea84 says: Feb 22, 2012 1:11 PM

I hope fr his sake that he does get cut. He’s still young enough to have a long career elsewhere. Is it fair to say the difference between Carolina from one year to the next was just Newton and Clausen? No. Not fair. Not accurate.
Is it fair to say one will have a great career and the other won’t off of one season each? Not at all.

Panther fans are so fickle…2 years ago you were crying about Clausen and he was the FUTURE and needed to get him in the game(s) to take his lumps…now you want him gone…What if (S)cam is a one year wonder and he stinks this season…what are you going to do then?? Put a call in to bring back Jake??

  42. rajbais says: Feb 22, 2012 1:53 PM

    Possibly.

  43. nineroutsider says: Feb 22, 2012 1:56 PM

Certainly not bagging on the Panthers, but my team “caught lightning in a bottle” last year and has 30 million in cap room, that is where every team wants to be. If Panther fans are happy with the season they had and the fact that they are limited by the cap this year and can’t do much to fill holes, then it’s all good but I wouldn’t count on “lightning” striking your team. I guess you don’t care though as wins cause you heartburn.

30 million in cap room because the 9ers have been cheap for the last decade. Of course Panther fans care. Concerned? No. Happy with 6-10? As an improvement from 2-14, yes.

You think that our GM is just gonna sit there and say, oh well we are over the cap…. Come on man. Contracts are going to get restructured, vets will get cut, etc. Our oft injured LBer Thomas Davis will restructure and that alone will get us under the current number.

Clausen was drafted into a horrible situation as a rookie and was thrown into the fire with a brutal schedule and many key injuries (on an already taken deficient offense) that made things worse than they were when he got there, which many people didn’t think was possible. Then then coaching staff got fired (rightfully so) and Clausen was made a scapegoat by the media and the organization.

Frankly, I hope he does get cut and gets a chance to play somewhere else. I know I certainly would mind seeing him as a backup for the Vikings, and he’s a better QB than a lot of teams have.

wtf have the niners done recently and who is their QB?

nowadays niner fans pick on carolina?…you are joking right? get a life, man. in the nfc south we play nfl teams. and your sorry niners would be fighting to not be DFL in the NFC south.

“dominate” the sh!tty nfc west 3 years straight before you crown your crappy team a dynasty.

and if your pathetic team could pull that off, they still can’t win an nfc championship.

you shouldn’t worry for carolina fans; you should pay more attention to your own incredibly-right-below-average team.

so again, what has your team accomplished lately and who is you QB?
