Eagles close to signing Trent Edwards

Trent Edwards AP

It’s rare for a G.M. give much away on the podium at the Scouting Combine, but Eagles G.M. Howie Roseman made an exception Thursday.

Roseman strongly indicated that the team will sign quarterback Trent Edwards shortly.

Of course, Roseman could be open about it because Edwards isn’t exactly in high demand. He did not finish last season with a team.

The other big takeaway from Roseman’s session: He was more optimistic than ever about DeSean Jackson’s future in Philly.

“We’re excited about the future of DeSean Jackson in Philadelphia,” Roseman said.

UPDATE 5:54 p.m. ET:  The Eagles have announced that Edwards has been signed to a one-year deal.

    That team is a mess.

Would be interesting to see what Edwards could do behind a decent offensive line.

sounds like they’re giving up on Vince Young.

Not only a decent O-Line, but with a proper QB coaching system in Andy Reid and Marty Mornhenwig, proper receivers and a proper RB.

    Jeff Garcia 2006 > Trent Edwards 2012

Sign him, then immediately ship him to Arizona for another 2nd rounder

  9. trbowman says: Feb 23, 2012 3:38 PM

Trent Edwards couldn’t beat out Kyle Boller in Oakland last year.

I don’t even need to add anything to that statement.

How many times you’re gonna use the word ‘proper’ to feel good about a Trent Edwards signing? Oakland had a decent O-Line, a good offensive minded coach in Hue Jackson and a top 5 RB when healthy in McFadden and Edwards still couldn’t even make the team. Moore, Ford, and Heyward-Bey aren’t a bad group of WR’s either. He’s had plenty of opportunities before with the Bills and Jags to be a starter and couldn’t take advantage of it. It just isn’t there for him.

  11. elmaxoh says: Feb 23, 2012 4:06 PM

Vince Young was a decent backup we don’t need this bust.

If you think Djax was frustrating when he wasn’t getting paid, wait until you see what he is like once he is paid.

  13. sdffa11 says: Feb 23, 2012 4:16 PM

is edwards really better than kafka? if kafka isn’t ready now to be a backup QB, he never will.

  14. laeaglefan says: Feb 23, 2012 4:20 PM

The Eagles are hoping that Trent Edwards (or any other backup QB) doesn’t even get a chance to see the field in 2012, but unfortunately that isn’t likely to be the case, considering Michael Vick’s propensity for injury. Look at the bright side though…Nobody expects anything out of Edwards so they won’t be disappointed…..AND……he’ll no doubt cost the Eagles less money than Vince Young and less bad PR too (Dream Team).

  15. rooney24 says: Feb 23, 2012 4:29 PM

Why Edwards? What does he offer?

  16. EJ says: Feb 23, 2012 4:39 PM

Trent Edwards never lived up to what everyone had planned for him. The whole “Franchise QB” thing… what a waste of time and money. I have a feeling that if Trent Edwards had never been drafted by Buffalo, JP Losman would have had bigtime success. Losman had a good year when he was able to play the full season, who knows what would of happened if he held the reins for another full season. Not only did Edwards screw up his career, he killed Losman’s, IMO.

    Goodbye Dream team Vince Young.

  18. androk23 says: Feb 23, 2012 4:52 PM

Any Bills fan will tell you Edwards became a different QB after that hit from Adrian Wilson. Maybe he should go to Detroit, so he can make like a lion and find his courage.

  19. jpmelon says: Feb 23, 2012 5:01 PM

Edwards was great until he got a concussion. Until he gets over his fear of being hit, he’ll never be a great QB again.

  20. bigbluenationdb says: Feb 23, 2012 5:06 PM

Giants fan here. The Eagles are terrible. They should clean house. They really only have 3-4 guys that are legit NFL players. McCoy would be the best running back in the league if he didn’t play for Andy Reid. Jason Peters is a beast at left tackle and Trent Cole is a very solid defensive end. Maclin is also solid. The rest of that team is god awful. Jackson is nothing more then a glorified punt return who can’t do nothing on offense but run deep. Put a safet over the top and he is a nonfactor in the game.

Reid and that organization benefited from the entire NFC being down for the early part of this century. Now that the NFC is back and better they are nothing more then a .500 team under Reid and their front office. They had their chance when the entire NFC was down but let teams like Tampa, Carolina and St. Louis end their seasons. They got embarressed by Green Bay in the playoffs last year.

then as reporters started raising there hands for questions Roseman would point to one and say “And you. Your our new linebacker”…then point to another ..”and you…..your our new safety”

I would love to here about a “strong indication” for a new GM

    ……..spits soda on computer screen……..

Edwards will end up starting multiple games next season for Philly due to Vick’s fragility.

And for that….the rest of the NFC East thanks Philly.

  28. stini777 says: Feb 23, 2012 6:13 PM

Someone should really let bigbluenationdb know that if the Eagles, as bad as they were, had won one more game last year the Giants wouldn’t have even made the playoffs.

And losing in the playoffs 21-16 to the team that eventually won the Super Bowl is far from an embarrassment.

Just another dopey Giants fan I guess.

  29. nineroutsider says: Feb 23, 2012 6:36 PM

I love Eagles fans, they get all stoked on signing Trent Edwards?!?! “Proper coaching”, “decent coaching”, “Jeff Garcia 2006 > Trent Edwards 2012″, I could go on.

Way too funny, straight up homers!!! It’s OK to rip your team once in a while. They all don’t walk on water, that is a stupid signing, don’t care who you are. It would be just as dumb for the Colts as it is for the Eagles. He should be out looking for an AFL gig and the Eagles bring him back. Dumb and the fans that support it, dumber than dumb…

  30. jakek2 says: Feb 23, 2012 6:37 PM

If the Eagles are going “copy cat” mode and trying to pattern itself after the Giants by making under-the-radar signings, then congratulations! Edwards is about as under-the radar and out of left field as you can get.

  31. bobbyhoying says: Feb 23, 2012 6:41 PM

If the Eagles are so bad, when will the Giants beat them in Jersey?

  32. jakek2 says: Feb 23, 2012 6:54 PM

bigbluenation – You hit the nail on the head re: Eagles. If your screen name or first sentence didn’t give away your team allegiance, there is no way you would have gotten a single thumbs down for that completely factual post.

  33. dolphins4 says: Feb 23, 2012 7:36 PM

This is a low risk signing and they could still draft another QB.

Just to start things off, not only is your grammar terrible, your spelling doesnt get much better. You have made some pretty asinine points that just couldnt go unnoticed. First off, the eagles did not get “embarressed” by the packers in the playoffs two seasons ago. They lost 21-16 (ill make it easy for you by letting you know that its only 5 points). They had one last shot from the GB 27 to win the game and it got picked off. If they had converted the two point conversion on the previous touchdown, the eagles kick a field goal and that game is in overtime. You say well maybe the kicker misses the field goal? Right, Akers (who was going through a daughter health scare) missed two field goals (worth six points). Ill let you take care of the math on that one to see what those six points would have meant. You said LeSean McCoy would be the best RB in the league if he didnt play for the eagles? How do you justify that? He led the league in rushing tds and had over 1300 yards without really playing the last two games. Also please tell me, how have the giants done against the eagles in the past three seasons.

Let the hater hate, but the BIRDGANG will be back in 2012

Wow….so, why do the G-men have such a hard time beating practice squad worthy players?

I’d take Manning over Vick….all day, any day…other than that? Please…inform me.

JIMMYGRAHAMCHRISIVORY, Since when are the Raiders, Jags and the Bills considered the top teams for QB evaluation. It seems like all 3 of these teams have failed miserably on evaluating talent over the last decade. And really, you want to judge him just because he was cut by the raiders? The same raider team that gave away a 1st and a 2nd round draft pick to pick up a QB who hasnt played too well since 07? Yea, the raiders seem like the best team in the league on evaluating a QBs talent. Same raider team that drafted Jamarcus Russel #1 overall?

  40. norcaleagles says: Feb 23, 2012 10:22 PM

NINEROUTSIDER. . . . . .still not as dumb as Kyle Williams!! Did he honestly think that if he doesnt chase after the ball, that nobody would notice that he touched it?!! Even with the multiple high-def cameras all throughout the stadium? NOW THATS DUMB!!

  41. drew05 says: Feb 23, 2012 10:26 PM

Need I remind you…the last time our teams competed against each other…yours was defeated by our 2nd string QB…

So…the G-men can’t beat 2nd string practice squad players? By your own “scouting report” of the Eagles.

I know, you won the superbowl…Congratulations!
(not really pertinent to this conversation)

Cowboys fan here and I hate to say it put I think the eagles are the team to beat in the NFC east next year at the end of the season the eagles where looking really good and let’s face it the giants won the division with 9 wins next year they will have to do a lot better

He’ll be the 3rd string QB if he makes the squad. I didn’t see any posts seriously claiming this was some monumental transaction.
