The 49ers have re-signed a free agent safety, but it isn’t starter Dashon Goldson.
Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports that the team agreed on a three-year, $6 million contract extension with Spillman, who was a pending restricted free agent, at the combine on Friday. The guaranteed portion of the deal is $1.8 million.
Spillman was a key member of the special teams units and led the team with 19 tackles in kick coverage. He also saw some action as a backup safety. With Goldson set to become an unrestricted free agent on March 13th, keeping Spillman in the fold gives the 49ers some cover if Goldson were to wind up somewhere else. Given his limited experience on defense, they would still likely be in the market for more safety help if they lose Goldson.
