49ers hold onto C.J. Spillman

The 49ers have re-signed a free agent safety, but it isn’t starter Dashon Goldson.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports that the team agreed on a three-year, $6 million contract extension with Spillman, who was a pending restricted free agent, at the combine on Friday. The guaranteed portion of the deal is $1.8 million.

Spillman was a key member of the special teams units and led the team with 19 tackles in kick coverage. He also saw some action as a backup safety. With Goldson set to become an unrestricted free agent on March 13th, keeping Spillman in the fold gives the 49ers some cover if Goldson were to wind up somewhere else. Given his limited experience on defense, they would still likely be in the market for more safety help if they lose Goldson.

Hope they don’t lose Goldson. That defense was fun to watch last year.

Spillman was a Special Teams beast last year; glad they resigned him. Goldson isn’t going anywhere though.

The Honey Badger returns to the TonyMontanaSquad. This dude is a BEAST on special teams.

Goldson is on the Bengals radar I’ve heard. Plenty of cap space, and definitely in need of a safety to replace Chris ( I like to tackle with my shoulder) Crocker.

The “honey badger” meme officially died when Brent Musburger used the phrase 1,249 times during the BCS title game. Please show respect for this meme by never mentioning it again.

stevincinci – Goldson is a West Coast guy and said he really does not want to leave the West Coast. Grew up in LA, School in Washington State, and pro Career with 49ers. He is not heading to the mid west. Trust me.

For those that dont know Spillman – he stopped Ray Rice on 3rd and 1 (or 2nd and 1 – I dont recall exactly) from goal on Thanksgiving night.
That preserved the niners streak of not allowing a rushing touchdown up to that point.

Dashon goldson should be let go if any of you watched he was lucky on at least half his interceptions bad angles and poor tackling just look back on how many missed tackles he had because he goes for the big hit and doesn’t wrap up I would rather have spillman get some work and maybe sign Dawkins or another veteran and draft a young guy
