Elway sidesteps question regarding other type of quarterback Denver wants

John Elway AP

Broncos V.P. of football operations John Elway stepped to the podium today in Indy to address the media, and pretty much every question he addressed from the media dealt, in one way or another, with the position Elway once played.

While Elway said plenty of the same predictable, aspirational things about starter Tim Tebow, Elway evaded the more pressing question regarding the manner in which the team will fill out the rest of the depth chart.

“I don’t know that we’re looking for [a backup] like Tim or your ordinary drop-back [passer], or somewhere in between,” Elway said, via quotes distributed by the team.  “I think until we find out the interest out there, it’s going to be hard to fill those spots.  I think when I look at Tim and I look at our offense, we can do it with either one.  Whether it be a guy like Tim, or if it’s more of a drop-back-type guy, we feel like either one is going to be able to fit.”

It makes the most sense for the Broncos to have one of each behind Tebow, so that he’ll have a true understudy along with someone who would be charged with trying to save the Broncos’ bacon by throwing the pig down the field if/when the team is behind by two or more scores.

Maybe they end up trading Tebow to Jax for Gabbert. If Khan overrules Gene Smith.

I think they are looking for a QB to run a”regular” offense.

Last year will be the best year of Tebow’s career in the NFL as a QB.

Everyone’s Tebowners will deflate next year early on.

I’ll answer for John Elway: “Accurate, with a strong arm and good pocket presence,” i.e. everything that Tebow is not.

It’s cute how Jokeland fans continue to talk trash. Oh wait, I forgot… you guys were in the Super Bowl in 2003. That’s usually your come back, right? Sorry, my bad.

Everyone needs to back off Elway. Tebow is not a franchise qb and whoever thinks different needs to see a neurologist

Vince Young would be a good back up to Tebow. He’s done in Philly!

What, because Tebow is completely incapable of leading a comeback himself? SMH

Ideally, Elway would bring in a veteran backup and use a second day pick on a developmental QB. I know the Tebowites don’t want to hear it, but his likelihood of long-term success is not good. Some franchises with entrenched QBs have used picks in rounds 2-3 on developmental backups (Chargers, Eagles, Patriots, Falcons), so don’t whine if they do it. It would be a smart move.

As a true Bronco fan and not a Tebow fan I could care less how he looks throwing the ball the only thing that matters is if its a win that’s all I don’t care how its won period and any REAL football fan would feel the same way.

Having said that I almost wish the Front Office would trade him cause im sick of hearing about Tebow being hated on by his own team

  11. ortonwhiskeycrew says: Feb 24, 2012 3:46 PM

    Draft Nick Foles.

  12. seangifford says: Feb 24, 2012 3:55 PM

Just exactly how did he side-step the question? What did you want him to say? If Denver is targeting a QB somewhere in the draft, do you really think Elway is going to give a hint to who they like on their draft board?

Patience is a virtue…sometimes you just have to wait and see instead of trying to figure everything out in advance.

    Conspiracy theory:

The Manning and Irsay charade about Peyton leaving is all smoke and mirrors. Colt’s re-sign Peyton at a reduced number. Denver trades up and gives away Herchel Walker quantity draft picks to Indy, and Elway gets to draft the player that everyone has been saying is the best QB prospect since Elway himself. Tebow is quickly converted to H-Back and receiving tight end. Tebow is pleased, as he always is. Irsay restocks the Colts empty cupboards with multiple draft picks, and Colts fans are happy once again as they get to watch Peyton properly retire with the only team he would have ever played for.

I agree with seanfgifford, why do you think he sidestepped the question? Why should he tell you what and how he wants to deal with his QB situation? Oh right, “just between you and me, tell us all your draft picks and considerations, of FA players and definately your thoughts about how Denver is going to do things next year.” And since we are the press, you can surely trust us sthat we will write everything exactly as you say it. Just ask Silver.

Who cares about the QB position right now. Denver obviously needs to fix the defense before anything. Cant win a championship with out a good defense. look at Elways QB stats when Denver won there first Super Bowl. 12 for 22 123 yards and 1 interception and rushed for 17 yards and a touchdown. That is how Tebow wins games. I know Elway had Terrell Davis as a running back. but its easier to find a running back in the 6th round that is good then paying and getting another Elway.

Elway is not an idiot, he won’t come right out and say it but he definitely sees Tebow for what he is: A below average QB. Terrible pocket presence, sloppy footwork, throws a tight spiral once in a blue moon, throws an accurate pass once in a blue moon… I don’t care how confident, upbeat and “what a great leader” he is. If he can’t throw well on a consistent basis he will never last in the NFL. It would be in his best interest for Timmy to switch to FB or TE… or else he will be out of the NFL in a year or two.

Biff is stuck with McHoody’s QB project and doesn’t quite know how to get out from under this mess without pissing off the Tebowites. Deal with it Johnny if you had the stones to stand up the fans in the first place you wouldn’t have painted yourself into this corner.

Um… yes. Yes he is. Do you really think Tebow singlehandedly won all those games for the Broncos last year? Really? So the defense deserves no credit? His blockers deserve no credit? His receivers making some amazing catches from his god-awful passes deserve no credit? Luck didn’t play a huge role in the Broncos success last year?

If you honestly believe that Tebow won those games all by himself then you a mentally ill, my friend. But no worries, you’re not alone. Most Tebow fans are sick in the head.

Hey Mr. Elway, here’s a little advice to help you keep your job, go out and draft your self a QB that can throw the ball. Teams will have a whole seasons worth of material on Tebow, and they’ll see he’s nothing more than a fullback.

  21. bodester says: Feb 24, 2012 6:03 PM

Deep inside it has to make Elway “cringe” every time Tebow throws the ball.

My thoughts exactly….gotta be killing Elway, being one of the best of all time, watching Timmy lead his troops down field.
That’s ok…let’s see what he can do when defenses have an off season to prepare.

Why in the world would you want to bring in another QB like Tebow?!?! Calling a back-up to Tebow Tebow’s “understudy” is an insult to the back up!!
