The Thursday PFT Live “to-do” list for the Eagles recommended that the team sign a veteran backup quarterback. Not long after that, the Eagles signed Trent Edwards.

Maybe we should have been more specific.

Regardless, Edwards appears to be the veteran backup on whom the Eagles will rely, even if he won’t truly be the backup. Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com reports that Mike Kafka will enter the season as the No. 2 quarterback, and that Edwards will be No. 3.

In the short term, it means that Vince Young won’t be back. In the long term, it’s not clear what this means. Frank’s item indicates that the depth-chart decisions have been made, even though offseason workouts don’t even start until April. If the Eagles thought highly enough of Edwards to sign him now, they surely would at least consider the possibility that he’ll be able to leapfrog Kafka.
