Hi, dickroy ....

Pressed for time lately. Think we'll keep Wallace if at all possible. Colbert's much better at working out compromises than Tom Donahoe was. But just read on Friday one liners we're keeping both Batch and Leftwich. That's nice. But who's gonna back up Ben?? As I recall, Leftwich hasn't played in two years and Tomlin didn't trust Charlie to do the job last year.

Ben gets pouty from time to time--as the comments on this thread show, boys will be boys. But Roethlisberger's never given anyone reason to doubt his career commitment to the Steelers. He wants to retire in Pittsburgh, so he's going to do what's necessary to work things out with and for the team. That's why he accepted his suspension without appeal, worked to revamp his image, restructured his contract--more than once--to help out the team. And that's why he'll work with Todd Haley. Ultimately, he wants to win another championship, be the Super Bowl MVP, and have a shot at Canton. He'll get on board with what he thinks can achieve those goals.

Brandt tweeted this am that Pitt has pushed 26 mill onto later years which is by far the most of any team. This is NOT Pitt's usual MO so I wonder if they were banking on the new CBA having a higher cap than this or something.

Actually it is Omar Khan who is the " capologist " and number guy... has been since 2001.

I was trying to think of how many " free agent " players that we have on the team as far as had been in the league with a diff team for 3 or 4 years and then we picked them up....really none at all other than Farrior and Cotchery who didnt really play at all ... which brings me to my next point...Since we dont go out and sign free agents to huge deals ... we pretty much stay in house and buid through draft which is how we can stay under cap and keep pro bowl talent around.

As of right now... the cap next year is to be around the same as it is this year. The tv contracts dont kick in till 2014 which will go up an estimated 10 to 15 million and another 10 million or so in 2015... the Steelers are roughly 6 million over cap for next year as of now...that is of course not including Wallace or Brown or Sanders who will be up for new contracts.... and of course that 6 million doesnt DEDUCT Smith,Ward, Hampton, Keisel, Farrior, Foot, Kemo or a few others who the Steelers havnt decided on or what is going to happen..

quittsburghstoolers says: Feb 23, 2012 10:43 PM

Yes… YES!

That’s right, THAT’S RIGHT… just keep pushing more &
more money into the future & onto future salary
caps instead of cutting the most overpaid guys &
replacing them with younger, cheaper ones.

Someday soon, that piper will need to be paid & they
won’t be able to push any more money into the future.
Once that day comes, it’ll mean 3 or 4 straight
seasons of terrible records for the team & blissful
silence coming from the Pittsburgh fans.

And when that happens, they’d better hope their hockey
team is still doing well ‘cuz we all know they don’t
have a decent baseball team to fall back on…

**************************************

For starters, what the Steelers are doing is moving money that is due now and spreading it over 4-6 years. It is done by every team. The way the Steelers write their contracts, it gives them the availability to do so, as long as the player is still going to be with the club. All this does is guarantee that Ben, Woodley, Timmons and the rest are going to be on the Steelers for at least 3-4 years.

Not a bad problem, if you ask me.

And, YES, normally this COULD bite a team in the rear end, but with the new TV deals that have been signed, the salary cap is going to jump somewhere between $15-30 million per year, once the new Thursday night package, along with the new DirecTv, CBS, NBC and ESPN contracts kick in, which should be in about 2013.

Sweet.. and jus like that the Steelers just cut $29.37M from the cap in two weeks time to get under the cap and the ONLY players they have HAD to get rid of was two players who didnt play. Since they are under... the Steelers Will still be in line to reduce contracts or cutting ties with a few players....

A Smith...
Hampton ??
Ward
Farrior ???
Foot ???
Kemo
Moore ??
Keisel??

Obviously...Keisel isnt going anywhere this year and I doubt Hampton is either.. Foot or Farrier will probably one or the other depending on how the draft goes what else we do and who we cut... but those players are in position to take a pay cut or be cut. That will leave us room to sign Wallace or let him go and also puts us in position to sign Brown for next year as well since a few on that list will be cut next year if they hang in for another year. Is funny how everyone says we are old... I dont see it.. the players they extended are going to be around for another 3- 5 years anyway and as always we have/will have ALOT of young guys waiting to play... Safety spots will really be only concern in the next few years that we are getting old.

RB very young...WR very young...QB....still have 5-7 years...OL.. very young .. DL..very Young
( Heyward and Hood plus NT in draft ) Hampton still another year or two.. LB..Timmons and Woodly coming into Prime..Harrison still good to go and we will be drafting a ILB in draft) CB.. needs works.. Taylor still has 3 years left and we do have 3 guys waiting to play.

Add all that up with another 3 years worth of draft picks and I think we are pretty good to go.

Sweet.. and jus like that the Steelers just cut $29.37M from the cap in two weeks time to get under the cap and the ONLY players they have HAD to get rid of was two players who didnt play. Since they are under… the Steelers Will still be in line to reduce contracts or cutting ties with a few players….

A Smith…
Hampton ??
Ward
Farrior ???
Foot ???
Kemo
Moore ??
Keisel??

Obviously…Keisel isnt going anywhere this year and I doubt Hampton is either.. Foot or Farrier will probably one or the other depending on how the draft goes what else we do and who we cut… but those players are in position to take a pay cut or be cut. That will leave us room to sign Wallace or let him go and also puts us in position to sign Brown for next year as well since a few on that list will be cut next year if they hang in for another year. Is funny how everyone says we are old… I dont see it.. the players they extended are going to be around for another 3- 5 years anyway and as always we have/will have ALOT of young guys waiting to play… Safety spots will really be only concern in the next few years that we are getting old.

Love the rapist jokes. Still clever and funny, and you can tell it still totally bothers Steeler fans. (sarcasm)

Speaking of Steeler fans, I don't know why they want to keep Wallace. I know he's fantastic, but speed isn't really an enduring quality, it's very replaceable, and they already have a good WR platoon. I would take the first rounder and let Wallace go. Of course I might be bias because I want the 49ers to get Wallace because he is the missing piece (that and an actual QB).

Yes... YES!

That's right, THAT'S RIGHT... just keep pushing more &
more money into the future & onto future salary
caps instead of cutting the most overpaid guys &
replacing them with younger, cheaper ones.

Someday soon, that piper will need to be paid & they
won't be able to push any more money into the future.
Once that day comes, it'll mean 3 or 4 straight
seasons of terrible records for the team & blissful
silence coming from the Pittsburgh fans.

And when that happens, they'd better hope their hockey
team is still doing well 'cuz we all know they don't
have a decent baseball team to fall back on...
