D’Qwell Jackson, Browns making progress

Bruce Gradkowski, D'Qwell Jackson AP

Browns linebacker D’Qwell Jackson, who under the normal definition of the term “comeback” should have been the 2011 NFL Comeback Player of the Year, would like to come back to Cleveland with a long-term deal.  On Saturday, his agent said that progress is being made in that regard.

Brian Mackler tells Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer that he had a “very positive meeting” with the team regarding a new contract for Jackson.

“We’re working really hard on this and hopefully we can get something done,” Mackler said.  “We’re working hard on it every day. . . .

“After the season was over, D’Qwell and I met and he instructed me to do everything in my power to get a long-term deal done with the Browns.  He wants to retire as a Cleveland Brown and likes the direction the team is going in.  He thinks [coach] Pat Shurmur and [defensive coordinator] Dick Jauron are tremendous.”

The Browns reportedly intend to use the franchise tag on Jackson, if a long-term deal can’t be negotiated.  He joined the team in round two of the 2006 draft.

Tells alot how much the Cleveland Browns means to him. We gave him another to prove himself and thats all he really wanted. Thanks DJ. Cant wait to watch our defense and you leading them.

I like this, this is good news. DQJ is a beast on D, throw some money at him and keep him!

Wow- franchise tag in Cleveland- that’s funny. I wouldn’t think after the last couple years, there is anyone there worth keeping. The only player there worth keeping is Jim Brown and I think he still is refusing to come to games…thanks Mike H.

Cleveland should be happy that a player like D’Well wants to play in a loser town like Cleveland.

The classic “he wants to retire (insert team name here)” line, I would usually believe it but when that team name is Cleveland Brown, I chuckle.

Which begs the question, when will this team ever be good? I predict they lose every game in their division this year. Not because I think they’re that bad, just that they have the fortune of being in the division amongst 3 out of the 6 best teams in the AFC last year. That show no signs of slowing down for the next few years.

How can the Browns prosper when the Bengals are ascending and the Ravens and Steelers are what they are. 6 losses book it, ok maybe 1 win at home if they catch a team slipping but seriously Browns fans get ready another long season or long seasons for the forseeable future.

Bengals are good every other year. This upcoming season is a suck season.

It always takes no time at all for the naysayers and humormongers to join in on Browns threads.

I think I particularly loved the one about no good players. They dont watch…they dont follow…they dont see what is happening in Cleveland. Heck…most in Cleveland don’t see what is happening.

Nobody good in Cleveland. Does that include 5 time ProBowler and three time AllPro Joe Thomas, arguably the best left tackle in the NFL? Or how about Joe Haden, a rising star in the defensive backfield, already having the term “shutdown” thrown around although it is a bit early. And D’Qwell Jackson, the subject of this article? Chopped liver?

And up and coming faces…Phil Taylor…Alex Mack…Jabaal Sheard…Greg Little. Old familiar faces like Josh Cribbs and we do hope Peyton Hillis stays with us as he says he wants to…

Add to this mix the fact that the Browns have three of the first 35 picks in the draft and eight overall…and with Tom Heckert doing the drafting…and the product the Browns puts on the field this year is going to open some eyes.

If we dont improve our quarterback position there are plenty of us who believe Colt McCoy is plenty capable of taking this team to great places. Those that dont are relishing the fact that we have the most viable options for drafting Robert Griffin III while others want us to take other gramebreakers.

Yeah…our division is the toughest in the NFL and we are gonna make it tougher. But who looks down at the rest of the division is subject to change. Prepare to see Orange helmets on top real soon.

    GO BROWNS.

I Live in Cleveland. I can see the stadium from my backyard. This place is a drink for a drowning man.
We sucked, We suck, We will continue to suck.
It is what it is. You can rip this post down, but the truth is what it is until we start winning.

Thank you, civilwarfish. Most Browns fans are so cynical, fatalist, etc. It’s great to see a Browns fan who is excited about the direction of the team. We may have sucked for a long time, but when the day comes, when they finally win it all, (laugh all you want haters,) I’ll know it’s all been worth it.

Wouldn’t be a day without a lions rip. Stafford for sure earned his award

  17. badrad1532 says: Feb 26, 2012 8:19 AM

And 2 games by 10 pts…., we were never really smoked like every non-fan envisions the browns getting beat by 50 pts every game

  18. dawglbfan says: Feb 26, 2012 8:30 AM

Ummm… buddy you are a tool, anybody who has every been to the stadium knows you cant see any houses. Unless your backyard is in Downtown Cleveland or lake Erie your full of it. Your prolly a Steelers fan that lives in Toledo.

  19. dawglbfan says: Feb 26, 2012 8:48 AM

Why cant Mary Kay Cabbot just shut up about us moving up to get RG3…
Shurmur is trying to downplay the situation. And she says “I Think it will take both first rounders.”
Apparently she doesn’t realize we draft ahead of Washington or anyone else who might be interested. What can they offer thats better than our 4 pick and or 2nd rounder????????………..Thats right they can’t…And she gets paid to do this stuff thats the crazy thing.

And secondly after free agency Washington and Miami will have Manning and Flynn. That only leaves Seattle and I have a feeling old Pete would rather wait for Barkley than spend his whole draft on moving up.

  20. ballboy48 says: Feb 26, 2012 9:31 AM

I don’t care what team you root for, D’Qwell Jackson is one of the best stories, and one of the most underrated LB’s in the NFL! He is always near the top of the League in tackles, and is an incredibly smart player!

  21. emmac13 says: Feb 26, 2012 10:45 AM

Browns haters the only difference between the Browns and ur mom is the Browns charge.

  22. ctowndaddy says: Feb 26, 2012 11:10 AM

We have some nice pieces on D…some really good things to build around. Sheard, Taylor, Haden & Ward. Need to sign DQ immediately. Here’s hoping he doesn’t re-tear one of his pecs after the big contract.
