Vikings angling to get everything they can for potential trade

Vikings Spielman Football AP

The Vikings are in an enviable spot with the No. 3 overall pick in the draft.

They will likely be able to draft the best non-quarterback in the draft like left tackle Matt Kalil. Or they could auction off the pick if Robert Griffin III falls past the Rams. New Vikings G.M. Rick Spielman sounds intrigued about making a big trade that could set up his franchise during a rebuilding time.

“You want to get everything you can this year,” Spielman told Jeremy Fowler of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

The Vikings would love to get a bounty like the Browns did last season when Atlanta traded up with Cleveland. I spoke to Spielman on NBC SportsTalk Thursday and he expected a lot of potential moves at the top of the draft.

“With the new CBA in place and the money not as significant before this new CBA came in, there will be a lot of activity I believe in those first five picks,” Spielman said.

They may very well get a haul. Blackmon comes to mind as a player who some GM may feel is the last piece of the puzzle … and would be willing to sell the farm to sign.

One problem here. Some team is going to be pretty pissed off (and feel stupid) when they give up picks to the Vikings for RGIII and another team swoops into the 2 spot. You arent trading into #3 for RGIII….for Kalil or Blackmon maybe.

  3. sixburghrules says: Feb 25, 2012 2:19 PM

I believe RGIII will pass by the Rams. The Rams are in the best position for a trade. The Rams know that plenty of teams will want to trade with them b/c if they don’t PLENTY of teams will trade with Vikings for #3. I think the Rams get the best deal out of this

  4. lombardihero says: Feb 25, 2012 2:24 PM

Some team trading up would not make the deal until the Vikes are on the clock… Come on now…

  5. mcjon22 says: Feb 25, 2012 2:27 PM

They won’t get jack for that pick. The Rams will trade their pick to insert team here for RGIII. Who else is worth trading that far up for?

  6. lombardihero says: Feb 25, 2012 2:29 PM

ramitbaby if RG3 is on the board when the Vikes Pick the team wishing to move up is going to know. The team trading up contacts the Vikings when they are announced on the clock.

Then they work the deal. Not three hours not 3 minutes before the 2nd pick is announced….

    I hope this helps you.

The Rams are the team sitting in the catbird seat. However, the RGIII expirament is going to bite a team in the end — he’s too small and won’t translate to the NFL.

Someone is going to give up a randsom to get him and regret it.

yeah, or else the vikings spend too much time on the lines haggling over compensation with someone else and the time elapses…… then the next team swoops in, hands in the card with RGIII’s name on it, and auctions him to the highest bidder

  9. vikesfansteve says: Feb 25, 2012 2:46 PM

The Vikings may just draft RG3 if he’s still there & try to trade Ponder for a 2nd & 3rd round pick. Maybe with the Redskins.

If Kalil is there the Vikings must take him.

The Vikings draft day debacles are legendary. They will be haggling with some team over a trade while their time expires and another team swoops in and makes a pick.

  11. purplengold says: Feb 25, 2012 3:03 PM

RG3 might not be the second player selected, so the Vikes could still cash in on their third overall pick.

  12. oldcracker says: Feb 25, 2012 3:14 PM

The Rams take Blackmon, they need that piece to the puzzle.

Do the Vikings use #3 on a lineman that can provide a decade or more of protection, or do they trade down and fill more holes with lesser talent? Tough choice.

As a Browns fan, I hope Vikings trade down and the new #3 (Miami?) takes RG III. I don’t want the Browns tempted into taking another “Mike Phipps” until they fill the many holes they still have. Colt hasn’t had a real chance to prove himself, and at worst, he is adequate until the rebuilding is done.

Holmgren & Heckert seem to have the team on course, let’s not lose the focus.

RGIII to small? vick is smaller, brees is smaller. u dont have to be tall to play qb u just got to know how to do it. height doesnt determine how well u play the game its about heart

  14. vikingsprimetime says: Feb 25, 2012 3:38 PM

F Spielman- if Griffin is somehow there at 3 draft him Vikes!

  15. lombardihero says: Feb 25, 2012 3:43 PM

That has happened.. But Most teams trading up with the team in that spot are on the phones speaking to teams prior. The actual trade does not take place until the team ahead of you picks and your on the clock. If someones draft team is unorganized and can not pull the trigger in 10 minutes they deserve to lose that pick…

Even if you were to hand your pick in while the other team was on the clock you can pull it back until it is your turn.

No team is going to trade up to the 3 spot for RG3 prior to the card and the announcement of the second player taking in this draft…

  16. stavreafavre says: Feb 25, 2012 3:56 PM

Maybe Jerry Jones will offer to build them a stadium for the pick.

  17. theytukrjobs says: Feb 25, 2012 5:41 PM

If the Rams fall in love with Kalil they are in a tricky spot. Vikes won’t get much for #3 if RGIII is gone.

  18. vikefan says: Feb 25, 2012 5:52 PM

the vikings are in a much better spot than the rams, anyone knows the rams will not draft a qb with 50 mil tied up in Stanford, no way you add first round $ to that position on roster

the vikings should have zero interest in a qb until o-line, d-secondary, & wr’s are fixed first. there is not a single qb in this league that would be successful behind our swiss cheese o-line with only 1 decent wr & 1 decend te to throw to. if an average qb is running for his life every play with no weapons to throw to and a d that allows 35 points a game, ur not helping ur qb at all.

Who is this “Stanford” guy you are rambling on about?

Do you mean former #1 overall pick Sam Bradford from Oklahoma?

Or are you trying to combine him and Lions former #1 overall pick Matt Stafford from Georgia into one guy?

  20. pappavike says: Feb 25, 2012 10:44 PM

Colts are taking Luck, Someone is gonna bite on Flynn, So there are still a few teams that need,Or want to upgrade at qb. The Rams have a few needs, More than the Vikes? Maybe not, But I think the Rams will find more dance partners.

  21. dobberdubinsky says: Feb 25, 2012 11:00 PM

Vikes should try to trade down if they could land a bunch of picks like Cleveland did last year. If they can’t, draft Kalil.

    ===================================
you do realize they only missed the timing once & they still ended up with the pick they wanted – Kevin Williams.
The other time they weren’t ready to jump the gun when the team before them were late.

    Bradford, sorry for horrible typo

either way, only way rams take rg3 is trade bait or predetermined future trade, & quite honestly after taking Ponder last year, Vikings SHOULD NOT be in market for qb either so that could even hurt their trade positioning

  24. 13curtjp says: Feb 26, 2012 12:09 PM

My guess is the browns will trade their first round spots to the rams for RG3. The vikings take kalil, rams take blackmon and everybody’s happy.

Well no, the Vikings shouldn’t take a QB. They invested a #1 in Ponder just this past year. He may flop with time, but he may develop into a long term starter. It’s way too early to determine him expendable… specially with the other holes on the team. Vikes target order (in my opinion) should be: 1 OL, 2 secondary, 3 LB, 4 WR. QB and HB are the least of concerns in the draft for the Vikes this year. I ranked WR lower because you can find mid-late round gold at WR much easier than D backs and O tackles (you also gotta do a better job of protecting Ponder so he has time to get the ball out).

  26. okemon says: Feb 27, 2012 1:40 PM

just because neither the vikings nor the rams are going to take a qb….. doesn’t mean that no one will trade to get RGIII…. that kind of thinking only helps Cleveland, any team above Cleveland who would like RGIII will want to trade even if the rams or the vikings are not interested in RGIII.

  27. vikefan says: Feb 27, 2012 5:25 PM

its all moot now with rams acknowleging willingness to trade

  28. antalicus says: Feb 29, 2012 3:03 PM

The vikings won’t draft a QB. They already have a similar QB in Joe Webb to RGIII. They are either taking Kalil or trading down.

I honestly could see spielman trading for a bunch of future picks and them not getting much this year in this draft.

  29. antalicus says: Feb 29, 2012 3:43 PM

    RGII
    6′ 2″
    223lbs
    4.41sec 40
    39″ vert jump

    Joe Webb
    6′ 4″
    220lbs
    4.43 sec 40
    42.5″ vert jump

If only the Vikings would give Webb more play time he could easily be a starter.
