The Buccaneers claim that they’re finally willing to spend on players. As it turns out, they’ll have to spend a little extra on their new coach, first.

Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune reports that the Buccaneers have paid $500,000 to Rutgers for the privilege of hiring coach Greg Schiano. The amount comes from Schiano’s contract with Rutgers, which required payment of $500,000 if he left before December 31, 2016.

Schiano, who spent 11 seasons as head coach of the Scarlet Knights, also reportedly owes Rutgers $300,000 for a home loan. It’s unknown whether he or the Buccaneers will be responsible for paying that amount.
