At the end of the day the RGIII vs Luck debate will take possibly years to solve, even then the answer may be debated. As far as their rookie year, it will depend on the team around them. That has been true for every single Quarterback who has ever started in the NFL. If you have a team around you (particularly an offensive line) then you perform better. Cam Newton has Kalil and Gross at two key offensive line position. In addition, he has weapons and a run game. Weapons that include DeAngelo Williams, Johnathan Stewart, and that guy Steve Smith. That's not mentioning a solid tight end corps. Give either Luck or RGIII the right system and they'll flourish. They're both smart guys who want to play football, success in the NFL isn't a matter of playing by yourself.

Luck was impressive, but Cam's athleticism goes way beyond just flat out speed or jumping ability... I've never seen a 6'5" 250 lb man break ankles the way Cam did last year. That elusiveness and Cam's arm strength are really what make him special.

I think Luck will be very good, but to compare them as athletes is laughable.

Besides, all indications point to the good possibility that Reggie Wayne will go where Manning goes. And I even read Jeff Saturday could go too, providing Peyton with a lot of familiarity in his new destination.

wickerphil says: Feb 26, 2012 12:35 PM

Also, with all things being equal, a QB with elite athleticism – as Luck and RG3 possess – will take you further than an average athlete at the position. Put it this way … Eli Manning is a better athlete than his brother. Peyton is smarter and more skilled, but Eli is more mobile, has a stronger arm, and is MUCH better at making plays when pressured, and at throwing downfield when rolling out of the pocket. So, the smarter, more skilled QB: better numbers and more consistent during the regular season, but a 9-10 playoff record. The more athletic QB: an 8-1 playoff record. Super Bowl wins: 2-1. Ben Roethlisberger: more of the same. He is a better athlete than Manning, makes more “athletic” plays when things break down, and has more Super Bowl wins than Manning will ever get as a result.
-------------------------------------------------

Whoa whoa whoa, hold on. Are you suggesting that Peyton wouldn't have won the Super Bowls on those teams? All props to Eli and Ben, but they weren't the driving factor behind their team.

The Colts were in this situation before with Manning v Leaf.

Now its Luck v RG3

Luck = Pro style QB
RG3 = spread style QB

Luck is the safer of the two and the Colts would be stupid to take RG3 over Luck

I love Griffin but Luck is a once-a-generation guy. Pass on him at your own risk.

I’ve watched every one of his games for 3 years. He did it all with zero wide receivers. Just a phenomenal QB….
--------------
Stevie, it's not really racism because sadly the media has been dictating who's going to be the next face of a franchise for years and has gone out of their way to not look bad by pumping up their chosen when they have accomplished something decent on the field, see Matt Stafford after 3 seasons of nothing, and playdown or simply ignore they suck, see Sam Bradford, Blaine Gabbert.

The racism comes in when those who were quick to point out why Blaine should have been picked over Cam because he was the "safer pick" are now telling us to choose Luck over RG III because...you guess it..."He's the safer pick."

Funny, I was watching basketball last night and what I found so facinating is how colorblind that sport really is. The guy who won the 3 point shoot-out was white and the guy who won the shoot-around was black. And you know, there wasn't a hint of who was better. Every player was good at what they did.

I seriously wonder when the NFL will truly be colorblind. Not have the majority of blacks in the "working man's" positions. While the whites in the leader, QB, and safe, kicking, positions.

If Peyton were 100% then The Colts would go RG3. You can make an argument that he needs a season, maybe two to study the pro game. He could even be built in some packages during the season. (Wildcat, etc)

Irsay wants Luck because he's a day 1 starter, and Peyton is not returning to Indy.

Yes, everyone can put their bust cards away for at least 2 years, The Colts are not going to be built to win for 2 seasons, they are reorganizing and re-loading talent... I don't care who the QB is at Lucas Oil next season, there will be more L's than W's...

Who's to say these guys won't be like Elway and Marino? It really all depends on what kind of system you want and what kinds of pieces you put around whichever guy you select.

Besides, all indications point to the good possibility that Reggie Wayne will go where Manning goes. And I even read Jeff Saturday could go too, providing Peyton with a lot of familiarity in his new destination. That also means the Colts will be even further depleted than they currently are, which is mind-boggling.

One problem with your analysis of playoff victories, Pittsburg and the Giants both have had a much better defenses. QB position is important, but defense does still matter just a little. Also noticed you conveniently didn't mention Brady, guess that is contrary to your argument.

I dont put any stock into a QB's 40 time or how high he can jump. Neither will the Colts. Andrew Luck is the obvious choice.

A QB shouldnt be a statue out there like Drew Bledsoe used to be. Guys like Aaron Rodgers and Big Ben can move around the pocket and buy time if they have to. So can Andrew Luck. easy decision

wickerphil says: Feb 26, 2012 12:35

      No it isn’t. Put it this way … Matt Leinart didn’t even train for the 40 yard dash, and when his pro-day came, he was so out of shape that he wore a big shirt that he refused to take off because he didn’t want anyone to see his lack of conditioning. And his USC teammate, LenDale White, was so out of shape that he injured himself on an exercise machine at the combine. What are Leinart and White doing today? Exactly.

      If players don’t take the combine process seriously, then that is a very bad sign. Just like it was when JaMarcus Russell and Ryan Leaf both showed up at the combine noticeably overweight.

      I wish you folks would quit pretending as if NFL QBs are college professors or something. The NFL is a sport, and QBs are athletes – jocks – just like everybody else.
--------
Couldn't have said any of this better myself, so I'll just re-post your brilliant statements.

The NFL isn't a drop back league anymore where you have any chance of fielding five Hall of Famers up front to protect your QB on a consistent enough basis, that even started being the case this past decade when we saw guys like Kurt Warner and Trent Green, both traditional drop back qBs, take a beating behind pretty good offensive lines.

One guy was so dizzy when he left St. Louis, everyone thought he was done from the pounding he took, and Trent Green probably can't remember his own phone number these days.

QBs don't have to be Michael Vick, but they need to be athletic with pretty good moves. Look at AAron Rodgers or Roethlisberger. They're the new prototype at minimum while the Peyton Mannings and Tom Bradys are going the way of the dinosaur.

The difference that Cam has is that he has great vision when running and he's remarkably agile for a guy his size. You don't see many guys his size making DBs just plain miss and look foolish. As a Panthers' fan, I don't really worry about Cam running. He rarely takes a hit when he's scrambling. Now I do hold my breath when he's laying out around the goal line though. I wish he'd chill with that. He took some big hits in that area last year.
