Stephen Jones: We don’t have enough talent to win on defense

Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones AP

The Cowboys have struggled badly against the pass for two years running. The Jones family usually talks about the team’s talent level in flowery terms, but VP Stephen Jones got real with his assessment this week.

“Obviously we are not pleased with where we are on defense,” Stephen Jones said via Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “We got to get better over there. I don’t know that we got good enough talent to win over there. We have to improve it.”

Based on conversations PFT had at the Combine, we expect the Cowboys to be very aggressive in free agency in an effort to upgrade that defensive talent base. They may be especially aggressive try to improve the secondary.

Finally someone from the Cowboys organization is intellectually honest about something and our chances. Presently constructed we’re a 7-9 team heading into next year.

Didn’t his idiot father just say that they had the talent to win a SB…

    Fire the GM!

  4. twitter:Chapman_Jamie says: Feb 27, 2012 10:44 AM

Oh but yet Jerry still thinks that Newman, rated the WORST coverage DB in the league, still has value. I love how the guys tasked with building the talent have no damn clue on how to actually do it.

  5. sprest83 says: Feb 27, 2012 10:46 AM

Sounds like a defensive focus draft, but hopefully they don’t tag Spencer. He is mediocre at best.

  6. 4ever19 says: Feb 27, 2012 10:48 AM

I’m not a Cowboys fan but even I know they need better DB play.

  7. sportsmeccabi says: Feb 27, 2012 10:49 AM

Over the course of this interview with Steven Jonrs, Terrance Neuman was already torched for 3 TDs.

  8. moneey31 says: Feb 27, 2012 10:50 AM

    AMEN,

we should be going after Finnegan or Grimes or both in free agency and should be looking to draft someone to replace Spencer and as many db’s as possible. Within this draft at least 3 picks should go towards the secondary. The only bright spots in our defense are at inside linebacker( Bruce/ Lee) and Ware

  9. joetoronto says: Feb 27, 2012 10:50 AM

Whoops, didn’t Jerrah just say the have Super Bowl talent?

  10. idoubtiwillbother says: Feb 27, 2012 10:57 AM

What I take from this is that, if your dad owns the Cowboys, you don’t have to go to English class from second grade on.

  11. oklahomaseahawk says: Feb 27, 2012 10:58 AM

The Redskins are the only relief they have from a passing attack in conference. Don’t expect one year to fix it Cowboy fans.

He must’ve been watching Victor Cruz highlights.

I wouldn’t lose a second of sleep if every single draft pick was spent on the defensive side of the ball.

  15. willyalistentothis says: Feb 27, 2012 11:13 AM

Now they just need to hire a GM to fix the problem.

  16. theyknowtheyknowtheyknow says: Feb 27, 2012 11:20 AM

For a team that’s been in contention for a playoff spot year in and year out, Jerry sure takes a lot of heat as a “GM”.

After all, it’s been pretty evident the past decade you just need to make the dance to have a chance.

I’d say Jerry is a top 10 GM in the league; browns, raiders, chiefs, broncos, dolphins, bills, redskins, titAns,Bucs, cardinals, rams,Seahawks, all perennial losers, that’s almost half the league right there

And since 2000, cowboys have the most players drafted still in te leAgue

Wow i had no idea we couldnt cover the pass.

I still want one offensive lineman drafted early.

After that you can draft all defense.

Typical clueless response from one of the Jones dummies. The cowboys don’t have enough talent in management to win anything.

As a lifelong Cowboy fan….spot on. The offense is very talented at Wideout, TE, RB, QB (regardless of what others say, about 26 teams would take Romo as an upgrade). A shut down corner and a headhunter like Ed Reed would make me pretty happy.

I’m just horrified that someone that high up talking on the record would be so careless as to sound like he’s drunk. Oh wait, his dad owns the Cowboys. He is probably drunk.

  23. idoubtiwillbother says: Feb 27, 2012 11:54 AM

I should add, my own usage was beyond clunky but I have a tendency to include far too many tangents in a single sentence, and to employ obtuse structure.

  24. preventdefense says: Feb 27, 2012 11:55 AM

What gave it away, being able to hold a 14 point lead to the Giants for four minutes? Or the fact that they made every single QB they played last year look like an all pro?

  25. war27 says: Feb 27, 2012 11:55 AM

That lack of talent also carries over to the DC. Not sure why the media makes so much of this guy. He’s been a failure everywhere he has gone once he left the Pats.

Maybe the VP of Player Personnel and the GM of the team need to get on the same page. That could be a problem. . .

    —————————————————————

Thats odd, the Skins had the 14th ranked passing attack in the league even w/ the Beck & Grossman combo. Dallas def needs help in the secondary but w/ the league’s switch to a passer friendly league even good corners are gonna get beat alot more than in the past. I think teams are actually better off investing in multiple pass rushers than anything.

Obviously another hater who didn’t even watch any of the Cowboys’ games last year. Other than the Lions and Jets games, Romo was spot on. Check out the numbers. If Romo had a defense on the other side of the field like the Ravens, Steelers, or Giants, he’d have his SB ring.

Stephen is 100% right. Proud of him for not eating the crap his father is shoveling the fans.

    Fellow Cowboy fans:

Stop debating with the Romo haters. Let them spew their ignorance and laugh. If Dallas had a solid defense, they would have beaten the Giants both times last year.

  37. electionconfidential says: Feb 27, 2012 1:30 PM

The Cowboys have an ownership problem. Jones is determined to tear down anything a great coach builds up. Ask Jimmy Johnson.

  39. bobhk says: Feb 27, 2012 1:58 PM

Recent successful franchises have generally built through the draft (as far as I can tell). They’ve not gone heavily into FA.

For Dallas’s sake, they’d better go for drafting good players than bring in a bunch of “big name” FAs. See what happened in Philly last year.

You bring in a big time FA if there’s just one hole in your team to fill.

It’s funny since the Cowboys have at least the top 5 most talented 53 man roster in the NFL. Player development is extremely poor along with sceme. Giant offensive lineman….and horrible cover corners. New Al Davis…thanks Jerry.

  44. bobhk says: Feb 27, 2012 2:57 PM

Cowboys fans are funny. In one post they claim Jerry is good GM. The implication is that Cowboys are talented. Otherwise, Jerry is not that good a GM (somehow I keep thinking of how Detroit fleeced Dallas in the Roy Williams trade).

In another post they claim that the talent has been deficient and there’s no leadership issue.

    Which one is it?

IMO, the defensive talent this year was poor. However, it’s been pretty good in the last 5 or 6 years. Why haven’t they won much (in playoffs especially) ? The bigger the stakes (read Dec) the smaller they’ve come up.

They have better than average talent in the last 5 years. Yet the Dec record is 8-12 (7-9 when you take out the year Romo was injured). That is pathetic.

Really, so tell me how does that great defense get ran over, drove down the field on, and gives up 85 yard drives in less than two minutes.??? Stop listening to ESPN. And if Jerry was that bad, how come the Cowboys are always in the running for the division crown??? They must win in spite of huh?!? Funny

You are contradicting yourself. First you say that how does a great D get run over and give up 85 yards and then you say Cowboys are always in the running due to Jerry’s drafting. So Jerry drafted good players yet they get run over and give up all those yards. So, are they badly coached?

If you read more carefully, I said that they were bad last year. However, they’ve not been bad last 5 years, have they? Yet, only one playoff win and numerous December swoons.
