David Molk: I’m the best center in the draft, it’s stupid to say I’m not

Ryan Van Bergen, David Molk AP

Michigan center David Molk isn’t lacking for confidence.

Prior to the Scouting Combine, Molk said he could break the event’s all-time record in the bench press, and although he fell short of that (finishing with 41 repetitions of 225 pounds, good for second-best this year), he’s continuing to talk himself up after the Combine.

Told by an AnnArbor.com reporter that most draftniks rank him as anywhere from the second-best to the sixth-best center in this year’s draft, Molk took exception to that. Molk, who won the Rimington Trophy as the best center in college football, says he’s clearly No. 1.

“The fact they could consider any center better than me is pretty stupid,” Molk said.

NFL Network’s Mike Mayock recently called Molk “very much a finesse guy,” and Molk took issue with that.

“He never played against me,” Molk said of Mayock. “I don’t think a finesse player has ever had defensive linemen quit during a game; quit and give up because you’re hurting them. I don’t think a finesse player has ever done what I do, which is just ground kids out of the hole. I think the fact he called me a finesse player is because he hasn’t watched me on film.”

Most draft analysts believe Wisconsin’s Peter Konz is the top center in the draft, and Molk takes issue with that, too.

“I have skills he doesn’t have,” Molk said of Konz. “Obviously, my strength is far better, I’m faster, I would say I’m smarter. Obviously, he’s an intelligent person, I’ve talked to him, but I just think I have a technique that’s unmatched.”

Molk was voted to several All-America teams, but Konz beat him out as an All-American on the vote taken by college football coaches. Molk said “stuff like that pisses me off.”

It also pisses Molk off that another Big Ten center, Ohio State’s Mike Brewster, is ranked ahead of him in many draft rankings.

“He is nowhere near me as a player,” Molk said of Brewster.

If there’s an NFL team out there wanting a center who’s strong in the weight room and cocky off the field, Molk is your man.

Either Manning/ Brady/ Brees/ Rodgers wouldnt go out and say he is the best QB in the nfl, this kid needs to learn some humility before a NFL player helps him with it.

I say he ends up on the Jets

Of course you are. Every player in this draft will tell you their the best at their position, because of the “competitor inside them” or some such bull.

there’s definitely something to be said for a young kid who’s confident

but to shoot your mouth off when you haven’t taken a snap in the nfl? to call other stupid in ironically the stupidest fashion?

Hope his skill set is bigger than the target he just painted on himself.

  14. biglebronski says: Feb 29, 2012 7:15 AM

Sadly, Mr. Molk, you’re not going to have these “kids” to pick on anymore. Nobody is going to quit during a game because you’re hurting them in the NFL. Unless Albert Haynesworth finds a job.

  15. nflfollower says: Feb 29, 2012 7:15 AM

If a player doesn’t say he’s the best, they are afraid evaluators will see it as a lack of confidence and their stock will fall. The NFL is a league of “alpha males”. You have to truly believe you can dominate before it will happen. I think a lot of these kids are getting advice to proclaim, if they are asked, that they are the best at their position. Seems like a new trend, with all the proclamations being made this month. If a guy who is arguably the best at his position says he isn’t, is that a red flag? It might be….

he is the type of guy that whenever there is a sack, or a missed block on a run up the middle, it will be everyone’s fault BUT his…. how can he be at fault? perfect people like him don’t make mistakes….

  29. Mr. Wright 212 says: Feb 29, 2012 7:49 AM

I don’t like this trend where guys are coming out and arrogantly making these statements. I’ve seen about four or five do so since the combine. KNOCK IT OFF.

It’s one thing to think it, and just the same for it to be true, but if you really are good, YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMIND US. It makes it look as if you are trying to convince yourself or the teams — and that sounds like agent-influenced BS.

  30. bearsfanohio says: Feb 29, 2012 7:51 AM

All the D tackles in the league are just waiting to show him where he stands. His welcome to the NFL moments are going to be many. Good luck kid…

  31. Mr. Wright 212 says: Feb 29, 2012 7:52 AM

That said, saying that you’re the best center in the draft is like saying you’re the best stove in a kitchen. It’s not like there are ever more than one or two legitimate centers (if that) annually.

With Baas sucking in 2011, I wouldn’t mind the Giants grabbing him, even though I know Reese is going for a defensive end in the draft, as usual.

  32. edukator4 says: Feb 29, 2012 7:56 AM

  35. rockthered1286 says: Feb 29, 2012 8:00 AM

Think Molk has crossed that fine line between confidence and arrogance. There’s a reason none of the analsyts who’ve been ranking college players entering the NFL for years and years and years don’t have you ranked #1. Obviously they chose someone with less skill, technique and intelligence as part of a conspiracy against Molk. And obviously all of the analysts, coaches & sports reporters are all stupid for not thinking he’s the best. Me against the world mentality always gets you far.

He may start a fight or two, but I definitely want a guy like this in the trenches with me, who wants to make the other guy quit.

  39. bearsfanohio says: Feb 29, 2012 8:10 AM

There’s a difference between confident and arrogant. The way this kid sounds, I can see coaches seeing someone who will be hard to coach because he won’t accept criticism well. Will he accept the line coach who tells him he needs to work on his technique or will he write it off as the coach just doesn’t know what he’s talking about? Even if it’s not true, he has alreasdy put that thought in people’s heads. That’s why this could be a problem for this kid.

  40. 69finfan says: Feb 29, 2012 8:10 AM

Mr. Molk is a legend in his own mind. If he’s as good as he says he is, well he wouldn’t have to say it because everybody would already know it and would say it for him.

    Haters.

It is very easy to be competitive and say you are the best without insulting other players. All he had to say was he has the best technique and strength of any center in the draft and it would have been fine. Yet Molk had to call his competition names, which comes across as spoiled and scared.

  43. skipbayless says: Feb 29, 2012 8:31 AM

  44. 10kmp says: Feb 29, 2012 8:31 AM

There are plenty of players in this league who are bull strong, bright, and hard working. They go about their business, keep their mouth shut, and let their play do their talking… and then you have Molk. Arrogant, loud, narcissistic. Molk, here’s something you’re apparently not bright enough to understand: it isn’t necessarily what you say, but how you say it. If you were really as smart as you consider yourself to be then you’d be able to articulate to all of the GM’s in this league that you’re a risk worth taking without sounding like the ass that you obviously are.

  47. uwsptke says: Feb 29, 2012 8:58 AM

There’s two ways to announce yourself as the best at a particular position. You can either do what Wisconsin’s Gabe Carimi did last year, and just say “I know what the experts say, but I believe I’m the best lineman in the draft this year” or you can do what Molk did. There is a HUGE difference. He went after Peter Konz by saying he’s faster, stronger, and smarter?

If the Packers don’t address the center position in free agency, I was hoping that they would pick up a guy later like Molk later in the draft (I’d rather they go defense than draft Konz in the first round), but now I wouldn’t touch him. Just wait until it comes time to sign him to a contract extension when he believes he’s the best center in all of football.

    @nflfollower:

I agree with your general point. If a team asks a kid in an interview if he thinks he is the best prospect at his position, he should certainly say he thinks he is.

That’s a long way from ranting on and on and on in an interview about how great you are and taking shots at specific other players by saying you’re smarter than them. He sounds like a 12 year old.

If his agent is really advising him to act like this either, a) his agent is an idiot, or b) his agent already realizes this kid is never going to make it the NFL and is hoping someone from the WWE takes notice.

AJ hawk sucks, RObiskie and hartline are god awful….

LOOK at the overall wins and losses vs the 2 programs JCHEESE, yea let me know that. HEy hows terrell Pryor doing. OSU is a bunch of cheaters, U BUY PLAYERS. YES U CHEAT. UR TEAM IS TO dumb to go to MIchigan. THATS why DESMOND AND WOODSON LEFT that sorry ass state cause nothing but losers. JUst like LEBRON LEFt because he hates ohio. OH and 3 years dont count in our rivalry bc we had the worst coach in the nation with DIP ROD at the helm. JUSt go look at our recruiting class now 2013. WEll see whose back. U guys have the lead for most busts in the nfl. And Mangold isnt even the best player on the jets, that would be David Harris, ask rex ryan that buddy.

Blackholebeaner that whole list is a bunch of scrubs u idiot. WInfield is old but he is still decent, holmes is a pothead and retard, mangold is ugly like everyone else in that state of ohio, and beenie wells is always hurt.

  89. cwroses1983 says: Feb 29, 2012 3:45 PM

why dont u look before 1994 you moron. your forgeting players like harbaugh and grbac and wheatley, toomer, RUNYAN, TY LAW,

MICHIGAN IS WAY BETTER THAN THOSE CHEATERS. U BUY PLAYERS AND also have the dumbest players and coaches. what idiot thinks its ok to give away bowl merchandise, only the ones from OHIO. I got an idea go embarras the big ten again and get smoked by another SEC team in the title game.

  90. shadowgm1 says: Feb 29, 2012 4:07 PM

The CFL may like him. Sounds like no matter what his talent level is, he’s uncoachable. That don’t fly long when you think you’re better than everyone else. Sounds like his interviews were just as disastrous.

  91. cwroses1983 says: Feb 29, 2012 4:14 PM

MICHIGAN vs OHIO head to head all time

58-43-6, but its really 64-37-6, because tressel cheated against us and still gets smoked against the SEC. Lyold Carr smoked BOurbon LYER

    ===================================

Would those same people you speak of that have done this for years and years be the same guys that had Alex Smith ahead of Aaron Rodgers and had a difficult time choosing between Peyton Manning and Ryan leaf?

    @cwroses1983
Ohio State has a Top-10 education too

  95. packerfan12 says: Feb 29, 2012 7:40 PM

This guy is a joke….I would much rather take Phil Blake, Ben Jones, Mike Brewster, and OF COURSE Peter Konz over this clown. I don’t know if he’s just trying to get his name out there, but just because you do a lot of reps doesn’t mean your good. If you’re good the scouts will see it, let your play do the talking. Instead a bunch of people hate you now because you sound like a gigantic douche bag who needs to be put in his place.

If we ever hear of this clown again I highly doubt it’s going to be because he’s the best 5th or 6th round draft pick ever….

  96. cwroses1983 says: Feb 29, 2012 9:10 PM

OHIO state is not a top 10 education school, MAURICE CLARETT WENT THERE

  97. lgwelsh1 says: Mar 1, 2012 5:15 PM

Ahh Kid’s, he obviously hasn’t faced Vince Wilfork yet LOL

He is going to get run over, all the big mouth’s do.

Molk will be a beast in the NFL. Only time will tell but his strength plus his athletic ability is off the charts. Michigan is back on the right path now, going to be fun watching Hoke and Meyer duel it out for recruits. Ill watch almost all college sports over pro except football, I like them about the same.

  99. killerskrew says: Mar 1, 2012 10:17 PM

Hoke won’t be able to compete with Meyer in the recruiting wars. With only a couple of months on the job, Urban Meyer already out-recruited Hokey Pokey this year. Can you imagine what he will do next year?
The Ohio State winning streak over the team up north will start again this year.

  100. jamezz23 says: Mar 2, 2012 1:07 PM

That’s exactly what Hoke did right after he got the job from RR. He went out and slavaged the broken class that RR had and hit the ground running in 2012. Michigan has the number one recruiting class in 2013 right now, all though its really early they will have no problem finishing in the top 5 in the nation. Not saying that Ohio won’t be up there also but we are definitely going to be the two best teams in the b1g really soon. The game is going to decide big 10 champs soon again, can’t wait.

    Go Blue

    @ jcsheese and cwroses1983 – Get a room already…

  102. gobluegodave says: Mar 18, 2012 11:45 AM

Yeah, NFL analysts who have likely never seen him play live, nor spoken a word to him, nor have ever looked Dave in the eye are most likely right…I keep forgetting that we have never seen their first round draft picks crash and burn in the NFL and have never seen their 7th round draft picks in the Pro Bowl. All of the NCAA folks who have awarded him year after year, and have actually seen him play over and over, are the ones who are wrong…whew, good thing you all with all of your on-field football experience are here to correct them and set the record straight! And I’m not trash talking NFL analysts, either, so don’t start that now.

And he never said that all NFL DL are weak or weaker than him, nor that all the NCAA DL he faced quit because they are hurt. So yeah, some of you absolutely did take him out of context, and how far you took it is unbelieveable, if not almost laughable!

And how old are you people? He said the word “stupid.” What are you, like 5, and that is a bad word? He did not directly insult any other center nor that he thinks the other centers are stupid, rather that he “thinks” he is better and why.

Not a team player? Yeah, that is why he was selected by his own teammates to be captain. Why don’t you all spend some time on YouTube and watch his press conferences to see just how much of a team player he is. And go back to the year when the defense was struggling to get the best example. Do your research and know your facts, or at least know something, before you open your mouth!

That kid has faced more adversity and challenges in his 20-something years than all you MI haters have faced combined and he still comes out swinging, does what it takes to improve himself, and keeps fighting to stay on top. That is what you should be taking “out of context.” And this attitude is exactly what any team needs on the playing field, not someone who packs up and goes home when the going gets tough…

gobluegodave – Are you David Molk’s mother?

  104. gobluegodave says: Mar 19, 2012 1:54 PM

cleverbob – don’t know if you are serious or being “smart” but either way, no, I am not. Although I am a mother to others, one of which who also plays organized football, I’m more so just a big fan of MI football and so subsequently followed Dave as well. I was really angry about how far this “stupid” article went and to what lengths people took it and how they twisted his words that I created an account just so I could reply and hopefully make people think of just how stupid they were behaving. And yeah, I used that word on purpose here!!!
