Henne expected to make more than $4 million-per-season

Dolphins quarterback Henne holds his shoulder as he leaves the game against the Chargers during NFL game in San Diego Reuters

Among quarterbacks expected to change teams this offseason, there’s Peyton Manning, Matt Flynn, and everyone else.

Chad Henne is reportedly getting the most attention of everyone else.

Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reports that Henne is drawing the strongest tampering consideration of any of the “1A” quarterback options. Also in that group: Kyle Orton, Jason Campbell, David Garrard, and Vince Young.

Henne expects to land a deal between $4-5 million, which is more than a traditional backup usually gets. Marvez writes that the Jets are considered a “strong contender” to land Henne. Seattle, Kansas City, and Denver are mentioned as other possible fits.

We think Henne could find some success in the right situation. Given a choice between him and Mark Sanchez, I’d take Henne. With that said, I don’t think Henne is worth more than Orton or Campbell.

If the Jets really want a veteran not named Manning to push Sanchez, there’s no need to overpay.

Agree that if he were to go to the Jets, he should start over Dirty Sanchez.

  12. dino2997 says: Feb 29, 2012 5:02 PM

Henne is worth more then Orton or Campbell simply because he has a higher upside. He’s still young.

You know Orton and Campbell will always be average at best.

  13. crackills says: Feb 29, 2012 5:05 PM

If Henne goes to the Jets… Sanchez becomes just another expensive mistake. The funny part is that Henne is an average QB with a slight upside.

  22. ProDolphinsTalk says: Feb 29, 2012 5:13 PM

If Henne wants to tap into any of this so-called ‘upside’ he’ll stay far away from Sparano and the Jets. He got his chance and the result was too many 4th qtr INT’s and two trips to IR. Sorry Chad, but you are a fraud at 5 million a year.

  23. gmsalpha says: Feb 29, 2012 5:14 PM

  24. finsfrontofficeisajoke says: Feb 29, 2012 5:15 PM

Henne is a good quarterback. Let me rephrase that: Henne could be a great system quarterback.

With the right system, this man could tear this league up. I really think he could flourish in Rex Ryan’s big talk, let’s-make-a-splash system. He’s always had the handcuffs on, and I’d like to see him get a chance to shine.

    That said, $%^# the Jets.

  25. realnflmaster says: Feb 29, 2012 5:23 PM

wow, jets really scrapin the bottom of the barrel huh? sparano? henne? b. edwards? pathetic. Who wouldve thought that the henne/sanchez debate would get resolved by way of henne starting over sanchez. Chad is better than sanchez but still not a superbowl winning quarterback. i dont think hes ever won 4 games in a row in his career. new york is gonna be a disaster when every week the entire fan base is gonna wonder if the second string qb should be starting. NY is not the place to have two equivalently mediocre quarterbacks on the roster.

I would avoid him. There’s a reason that not even the QB-needy Dolphins are interested. Jason Campbell would be a better choice, based on his performance in Oakland anyway.

  31. plumbstupid says: Feb 29, 2012 5:31 PM

I’ve watched many Miami games. Henne has everything but field vision. I’m not sure if it was because he didn’t trust his o-line or because he just has poor field vision.

  35. realitypolice says: Feb 29, 2012 5:43 PM

I usually don’t make this argument, but I will here.

This guy was horribly mis-coached. The offense they ran there was awful and they constantly messed with this guy’s head by yanking him in out of the starting lineup.

I have no idea if he’s any good, but I think he deserves another shot.

  36. orangeaqua says: Feb 29, 2012 5:44 PM

  37. jca6610 says: Feb 29, 2012 5:46 PM

  39. cwroses1983 says: Feb 29, 2012 5:57 PM

henne can be good in this league. he can be a pro bowler IMO. He has only had 2 years to start and been hurt most the time. When healthy he is a good player. If they could get him some weapons other than marshall and bush he should be good to go. He is way better than flynn btw. Flynn had one game against the worst secondary in the league. Yes Lions your def is garbage, gunther u gotta go

Ever see Chad Henne and Jon Kittna in the same room at the same time? I think PFT needs to investigate.

  43. mc9399 says: Feb 29, 2012 6:53 PM

henne played well in the first 3 games last season behind a terrible right side of the oline, it probably would have been his breakout year had he not gotten injured. i think he will be a good starter in this league, although dan henning really scrambled his game up, acting like chad was chad pennington and not henne.

  44. bjerols says: Feb 29, 2012 6:58 PM

Henne over Sanchez? Pfft not if I was the GM! Henne is terrible where-as Sanchez is just bad. Chad will be out of the league in 2 years, Sanchez will be at least a backup and last maybe 4-5 more years in NFL

  45. kerc1986 says: Feb 29, 2012 6:58 PM

Imo its good he moving from dolphins, the coaching staff didn’t do his best o-line was always a mess, but sometimes he would make some throws that left you wonder why he threw it there,?
But I don’t think he can be a starter at least this year he needs to get good coaching n sit a year behind an offense n learn so he can stop being gun shy, n if he goes to the jets why would he go back to sporano who never trust him.

N I would rather see flynn or moore again instead of henne, dolphins need to trade for rg3 simple as dat

  46. AlanSaysYo says: Feb 29, 2012 6:58 PM

Loving the irony. Jets fans were oh so offended at the suggestion that Henne was better than Sanchez at this time last year. Now the Jets are not only looking at Henne to compete with Sanchez, but they’ve already brought in the man who stunted Henne’s development as offensive coordinator.

Phins/Browns, Hartline makes a great double move, 5 seconds later(or so it seemed) Henne sees his opportunity. unfortunately that is 2 seconds too late and a lifetime for Harden to come “open”. Henne threw the DB open!!! great stuff

  57. FinFan68 says: Feb 29, 2012 9:02 PM

Henne would be a good starter in Seattle or Cleveland. My guess is he winds up as a backup in Chicago or Denver (unless Tebow fades). I don’t want to see him go to the Jets. He is better than Sanchez…but Sparano has no clue how to develop a QB.

  58. 305phinphan says: Feb 29, 2012 9:10 PM

Let me guess, NOW that Henne is no longer with the Dolphins and could possibly be joining the Jets all Jet fans are going to talk about how great Henne is, the same Jet fans that bashed the guy the past couple of seasons.

  59. kappy32 says: Feb 29, 2012 9:55 PM

A lot of you guys, especially Jets fans, crap on Henne all the time and it is completely unwarranted. Henne isn’t Brady, Manning, Manning or Rodger, but the dude is a solid NFL QB. Each year he has put up respectable statistics, made made impressive by playing for one of the most conservative play-callers in the NFL with Tony Sparano (have fun Jets fans; you thought Schotty was boring & conservative, just wait). At this point in their respective careers, Henne is a better QB than Mark Sanchez, and when they both hang up their cleats, Henne will have the better career (No, I’m not a Dolphins fan, I actually dislike them).

There might be more to this story than is being recognized & it may be an indictment against Sanchez. 2 seasons ago, the Jets instituted a color-coded, Homeland Security-like play calling system to “simplify things” for Sanchez. I have NEVER heard of a play-calling procedure that elementarily employs colors to simplify something as basic as calling plays. The fact that the Jets were forced to do this demonstrates to me that Sanchez is not very smart; as a matter of fact, it makes Sanchez look plain stupid. With Sparano becoming the new OC for the NYJ, their interest in Henne may be driven by the Jets’ lack of faith in Sanchez’s ability to fully & quickly learn Sparano’s offense, having Henne serve as a tutor of sorts. Frankly, I am convinced that is the motive behind the Jets’ interest. When you couple Sanchez’s stupidity with the fact that Henne is a better QB than him, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Henne as the starting QB of the NYJ by week 10 of the 2012 season, so long as they sign him. With that being said, I highly doubt the Jets will bring in a starting-caliber QB to push Sanchez. If they do that, there could be some big problems with the Jets front office and bi-polar fans. It came to light at the end of this season that there are some Jets’ decision makers who don’t believe Sanchez is an NFL QB. Regardless, Rex Ryan is going to stick with him as long as he can, but the fact will remain that Sanchez sucks. Once Sanchez shows he is nothing more than a back-up this season, the Jets’ front office will start putting pressure on Rex to make a change & the whole team will begin to feel the heat from the bi-polar fans wanting a change. So long as they have someone with the capability of Mark Brunell or Brooks Bollinger serving as the back-up, the Jets will have no choice but to stick with Sanchez all year. However, if they sign a quality back-up QB who has the potential to be a starter, Sanchez will find himself out of a job. I can see it now & it’ll happen going into the bye week: Rex Ryan will nonchalantly tell the media that he decided to give Sanchez an extra week off, the week following the bye, for a “mental break” and if whoever the new starter is has a good game, getting a W, Sanchez will be diagnosed with a finger or foot injury, requiring season-ending surgery; but if the new starter has a bad game, Sanchez will come back in after his “mental break” and continue to suck. Gotta love them Jets!!!

  60. vaughnorange says: Feb 29, 2012 10:28 PM

Henne never had the fire/passion. It’s like he was sleepwalking out there.

  61. sclazo says: Feb 29, 2012 10:35 PM

The guy had three years to prove he was a franchise QB and failed. People want to bash the coaching staff well not only was that staff fired BUT why did Moore do SO much better than Henne? The Phins not resigning Henne is the best thing to do. He has already lost his job to Moore. Now weather the Phins bring in Manning, Flynn, or if Moore is the starter for next season the QB position has already been upgraded.

  62. 69finfan says: Feb 29, 2012 10:43 PM

Fact: Hene career 75 QB rating, 31 TD’s 37 int, under 7 yards/catch. You can blame coaches and schemes and everything else but the bottom line is Hene = mediocre. Plain and simple.

  71. dolphincritic says: Mar 2, 2012 9:04 AM

Henne (a loser QB) will follow his loser coach to the Jets! That should assure the AFC East of parity! Ryan and Sporano will certainly run the Jets into the ground! The Patriots will retool like always. The Bills will have a good draft but end up with injuries or some other train wreck scenario. The Dolphins are a wild card at this point. Our season just got softer! Henne is not an improvement over Sanchez. Henne will be a costly back-up. If Santonio Holmes hated Sanchez, he will want to assassinate Henne!

  72. onebaud says: Mar 2, 2012 12:19 PM

All of the Henne haters out there are going to be embarrassed when he comes to town with another team, think green, and tears the Dolphins up. I think he will be loving it though and loving a chance to play where the haters aren’t.

  73. Lead Follower says: Mar 2, 2012 12:54 PM

Henne will be a franchise QB. Just too bad the Phins didn’t give him a legit shot. I will be very frustrated if he does it in NY. But it is not like we have not done this before……Wes Welker.
