Jeff Backus’s agent has “positive discussion” with Lions

The Lions have very little cap space and quite a few players they want to sign, and so they’re likely to be more active in the two weeks before free agency starts than in the period immediately after free agency starts.

Among the many moves they’d like to get done is a new contract for left tackle Jeff Backus, who becomes a free agent on March 13. Backus’s agent says he thinks there’s a good chance that will happen.

We met at the combine and had a positive discussion,” agent Pat Dye told the Detroit Free Press. “We’ll probably be reconvening here in the near future and we’ll see where it goes.”

Both Lions coach Jim Schwartz and General Manager Martin Mayhew have said they’d like to have Backus back. Backus suffered a torn biceps in the Lions’ playoff loss to the Saints, but he is reportedly making good progress in rehab.

$1 a game is about right for this guy. Jared Allen would have 40 sacks if he played this guy every week. Time to let him go and look for a compliment to the rest of the team if you expect to compete with GB.

    Frist to say
He is a must have their is no one on the team that is a better LT by a upgrade is on the way.

Lions no sooner get good – then they run into cap issues. They also gotta pav Avril, Tulloch and Megatron.

Attention all Jared Allen Jock Sniffers….

Ask Jared who the toughest left tackle in the division is…

Hint: He has never missed a start in his career.

Hey haters, Wasn’t he voted the best LT in the NFC North this year by his peers?

You can’t put a dollar sign on durability. Teams hate paying players to walk on the sideline joking around in street clothes. Backus makes his fair share of boneheaded mistakes, but when you’re in battle you want the guy who gets up after every play and lines back up. Sign him to a few years and let him mentor and allow the man to retire a Lion. He’s been through hell and back. Doing that for a player is what separates the teams that players WANT to play for, and the teams the players don’t.

Backus has been hurt the last two seasons so he’s aware that his playing days are near the end. I’m sure that he doesn’t want to move from the area. Probably his last year. Sign him very, very cheaply.

No better option on the team and while Backus isn’t all pro, he brings his lunchpail everyday and shows up.Not a lot of sure fire options in the draft either at the 23 pick. Sign him for a few more years and get a kid to learn the position without getting thrown to the wolves. Peppers and Allen in that division is no place to break a raw rookie in unless he’s a top prospect pick.

Jeff Backus deserves a decent deal.

    Go Lions! Go Badgers!

At this point, they really can’t do deals with anyone until they do Megatron’s deal – correct?

Once they see how much cap space they can free up from reworking #81′s contract, the can get serious with Backus, Avril, Tulloch, etc.

    @ Darth analhitman,

Typical loser Detroit fan. One good year in 30 out of the past 50 or 60 and your a beast. If you can’t block a last place team you can’t compete with a powerhouse like GB. Jared plays for the Vikings, you win 2, maybe. A crappy DE plays for the Packers and you lose 2 for sure. Time to get out of Mommy’s basement and make a living, loser!!

  15. zappa69 says: Feb 29, 2012 10:12 PM

Absolutely amazing anyone thinks Backus isn’t anything more than a revolving door. WTF, watch the games! Maybe a great guy but he gets beat 80% of the time on passing downs. Stafford can’t take another year of this loser (dark dork) on end. Time to take the cherries out of your ears and realize if you want to compete you need to beat the bad teams (Vikes) decisively and compete with the top divisional team (GB). Just a matter of time before the Lions are a 500 team again.
