Getty ImagesRobert Mathis figures to be the consolation prize to teams that lose in the Mario Williams sweepstakes in free agency this year. Of course, Mathis has to get to free agency first.
Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star reports that contract talks between Mathis and the Colts “are warming up considerably.”
We’re a little surprised. Paying a 31-year-old pass rusher huge money when the team is changing defensive schemes doesn’t make a ton of sense for a rebuilding club like the Colts.
This news indicates that the Colts are serious about keeping Mathis. If that’s the case, perhaps they will consider using the franchise tag on him.
The Titans and Falcons have been mentioned as potential landing spots for Mathis. The Seahawks would also make some sense.

That picture just reminds me how bad Byron Bell was.
A former Colts player being picked up by the Titans??? No way…that’s never happened before (yes, that’s sarcasm!)
Yea Titans love our sloppy seconds!!!! Lol
Hey what’s up
Okay protect the ball
Please resign this true warrior…nobody plays the game harder…he’s got a lot left in the tank
Since when is Kravitz a reliable source?
Mario Williams Can’t hold Mathis’s Jock !!
The Colts have said all along that Mathis was a priority to re-sign.
There isn’t any news here.
Consolation? He’s out produced Williams for far less money.
If Williams can play as a stand up linebacker Mathis can too – he’s faster.
My understanding was Polian was purposely preparing the roster and salary cap to leverage for the 2011 season – Mathis would’ve had none with about 9 sacks on a 2 win team, playing on a defense with its starters mostly on IR – the same with Wayne trying to get leverage a season in which Curtis painter was throwing him the ball. With a new coach he now had leverage that was t there – mainly how he “might” fit in.
It’s just unfortunate football is not like stock – in which people like buffet and polian amass billions and record wins, but like slavery, in which case you could be the most of a man and wisest of the wise, but the end result is determined by the ebbs and inpulsions of a non investor owner with an artistic bent and record for lack if self restraint.
