thankheavenfornumberseven:
"All I’ve heard from Packer fans for the last two years is that the only way to build a team is through the draft and that any team that signs a free agent is trying to take shortcuts that will lead to the eventual doom of the franchise."

2009: GB 11-6 Min 13-5
2010: GB 14-6 Min 6-10
2011: GB 15-2 Min 3-13
Gee, were we proven right or no?
How'd the eagles do this year compared to teams like The Giants/Packers/Patriots?

We all know that TT won't sign a high priced FA. It throws the salary cap structure out of whack. It ticks off your own guys who've been doing good work that want a raise. And no football team is alike - baseball is largely an individual sport. Football is not - someone who looks awesome on one team could really not fit in with the scheme/structure of another team.

I could see TT going after a center for a few mil a year. Maybe a backup DL or OLB. Not big $$$ guys. That's gonna be the draft - it always has been for TT...

"EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - State emergency officials are renewing their warnings about snowblowers, after seven men in the Eau Claire area suffered severe hand injuries this week.

Officials say the injuries occurred in separate accidents as the men used their hands to clear wet, heavy snow from their snowblowers. Four required surgery, and three of those had at least one finger partially or completely amputated."

Nearly every fan of every team would like their team to be somewhat active in UFA.

Packer fans and a few other teams fans almost always get the shaft during this time of year, hopes and dreams get crushed as all the FAs go elsewhere.

Signing a FA or two once in a while is not bad for a team, especially when hes a fit for the role your signing him for and he doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Think of it as, for every UFA you sign, thats one less of your own players you can sign now or in the future.

Philly did well last year in terms of value but that was a strange situation and they took advantage of it, maybe they over did it a little. Didn't work out too well for them though so far.

All I know is im human and I can't lie, the thought of The Pack signing a guy like "Super" Mario Williams to help fix the pass rush is exciting but I know theres literally no way its gonna happen and I am ok with that.

This year it would be nice to find a good pass rushing threat DE or OLB in UFA to take some of the pressure off of trying to land a good one in the draft.

I guess he finally realized his stubborn "draft only" position actually isn't realistic, and was able to produce one lucky SB team, but didn't have the personnel to actually go far into the playoffs a second time. And honestly two of the most important players on the team Charles Woodson and Ryan Pickett were both free agent signings for big money. Imagine if Ted wasn't so stubborn in avoiding free agents in so long, they could've won their 3rd Super Bowl last year!

All this talk about letting Jenkins go - on this very site at the start of the year it was reported that Cullen hit FA, the Eagles offered a contract and he jumped. Cullen left the Packers and never gave them a shot to match.

Was it wrong to let him go and test FA? No. Not at his age and injury status.

I believe if Cullen had come back to the Pack and said "Eagles offer X - will you match" - Ted would have.

The guy GB REALLY missed was Jolly. He was worth more to that D and pass rush than Cullen was.

As to future FAs and how to build a team - FA is just a label, Ted will get a guy based upon value. FA, UDFA, moving in the draft (Matthews), etc.

Pretty interesting factoid, for sure - any idea what team has gone the next-longest without signing an UFA.

Really? I think you might stretching the truth because everytime you post this I tell you that the Packers like to primarily build through the draft, but will occasionally sign free agents when it makes sense (e.g., Reggie White, Charles Woodson). By the way, can you guess what each of those two signings have in common? Hint: viks don’t have one.

thankheavenfornumberseven says:Mar 1, 2012 4:04 PM

All I’ve heard from Packer fans for the last two years is that the only way to build a team is through the draft and that any team that signs a free agent is trying to take shortcuts that will lead to the eventual doom of the franchise. Now we’ll hear nothing but what a genius Ted Thompson is at signing free agents.

------------

Really? I think you might stretching the truth because everytime you post this I tell you that the Packers like to primarily build through the draft, but will occasionally sign free agents when it makes sense (e.g., Reggie White, Charles Woodson). By the way, can you guess what each of those two signings have in common? Hint: viks don't have one.

Do what you need to do to get the likes of Peprah off of the Packers. That is all I ask. Get Peprah out of a green and gold jersey. The kid stinks... while you are at it, I dont care about his Special Teams skills, take Bush with ya.

I couldn't believe my eyes after Bush laid out a guy and stood over him taunting him... the guy by the way, scored a touchdown... I dont know, but the running back did his job, Bush didn't and you are going to taunt. Get the hell out of GB

29 wins and 1 super bowl in the last 24 months has to buy Ted Thompson the benefit of just about any doubt at this point, but I am starting to get a little worried.

The packers kept the wrong linebacker when they let Barnett go and signed Hawk for big money. They badly misjudged Cullen Jenkins' value, and their ability to replace him. Now they appear to be on the verge of making the same mistake with Wells.

Incidentally, it's a mistake they already made once. In 2009, they wrongly believed that Jason Spitz was the better player and benched Wells. Spitz played his way off the team and Wells became a pro bowler. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it, I guess.

I don't think it's Ted Thompson's way to sign free agents. Say what you want about him, but that Super Bowl squad in 2010 was mostly built off the draft.

I like how the Packers run their business, but with their defense in the shape it's in, it might not hurt too bad for Ted to look for some good free agents to help fix that defense. Their offense is bolstering and they are loaded with talent, but Rodgers is never going to win another Super Bowl without the held of the other part of the team (Defense) doing their job.
