@bearflagfan, you can’t point out great moves and call them luck. You don’t just luckily put together a Super Bowl winning roster that competes at the top of the league year in and year out. He may have said a stupid thing here but in principle he is right. He doesn’t want to break the bank and put the team in salary cap hell for any player, including Brees. Big salaries ruin a team.

You don’t ever tell your GM to not get the best possible deal for the team. If you let the players dictate the terms why even hire a GM? Sorry but you instruct Loomis to sign Brees to the best team friendly contract you can so we can continue to be an elite team and not just a one trick pony. This is the negotiation process and you don’t let some outside issues influence the health of the team for the next 5 years. Don’t over react and lose sight at what is important here, fielding a Super Bowl roster, not just a Super Bowl QB.

Mickey Loomis is a small college hoopster turned accountant who lucked into becoming GM of the Saints. He is a cheap-skate who lucked out at getting Sean Payton and Drew Brees at fire sale prices. Payton hadn’t even been a coordinator at Dallas and didn’t command a huge salary. Brees was coming off an injury and was not in a position to demand a top-flight salary. Read Brees’ autobiography and Loomis doesn’t even play a role – it was all about Payton. Given the Payton may not be on the field for several games (or Loomis for that matter), owner Tom Benson should just instruct Loomis to sign for whatever Brees wants so at least one leader remains with the Saints on opening day.

I take Brees over Brady and equal to Rogers. If they don’t pay him and keep him, there may be a riot in New Orleans.

Brees is a top tier QB. Currently, I would only pick Brady and Rogers over Brees. I believe that Brees deserves around $20mil a year. I would be curious to know the amount he is being offered by the Saints.

Niner thru and thru forever – always have been, always will be. That being said, Brees is as good as there is in football. Period. I deeply admire the way he plays the game, and what I have seen of how he carries himself. I don’t know “great” “elite” blah, blah, blah. I do know this young man plays on a whole ‘nother level.

Saints are taking a hit PR wise here, but look at this. They offered Brees a contract last year that would have made him the highest paid player in the league. He refused. What do you do after that?

Actually, Brady did, and two more QBs were in the ballpark. Marino’s number was 5,084 in 1984…

1 Drew Brees, NO 657 – 468 – 5,476
2 Tom Brady, NE 611 – 401 – 5,235
3 Matthew Stafford, DET 663 – 421 – 5,038
4 Eli Manning, NYG 589 – 359 – 4,933

Stafford just missed passing Marino by 47 yards, and Eli wasn’t that far off the mark either. The offensive game is different now – Marino would have thrown for 6,000 with the “Marks Brothers” if he had today’s pass defense rules.

I have visions of brown paper bags over Saints fans heads if this “very good, not great” quote is accurate. Has Loomis forgotten Bobby Hebert, and all other QBs who preceded Brees? I have! I can’t name any other Saints QB before Brees made the Aints relevant.

brees has all the leverage. why should he accept an offer that is below market value?

if the saints front office thinks their offer is fair, let brees go on the open market and see if he can’t get a better offer. since he played out his contract, he earned the right to get a market value deal.

i wouldnt blame brees if he decided to sit out the season to show their front office he means business.

just like you wouldnt disrespect brady or rodgers with a below market value offer, brees belongs in that category

I remember the chargers saying the same thing that he’s not a big game QB or just doesnt have the arm to get to the big game and win.
AJ Smith has been a loser all his career, but i bet the picture of brees holding the super bowl trophy is one he’ll never forget.

Drew is a great quarterback but he does lack some cold weather ability and he needs to sign a deal for the team, not himself. Winning the Superbowl leads to more money and advertisements which can make up the difference in pay. Just sign the damn deal, take one for the team and get the rest of the squad back on. Most people never make 5 million in a life time, you already have enough money to last until your kids have grand kids. Stop being greedy Drew and sign the paper, get busy and do your thing. You’re a great QB but you make stupid mistakes trying to force the ball at times and that lowers your pay. Loomis is wrong, and so is Drew, meet in the middle and get it done.

Coaching and situation created Drew Brees, how was he outside in Sunny San Diego? Oh right, slightly above average.

LOL @ anyone who think Brees would come close to his #’s playing in Green Bay, New England or New York.

FACT Drew Brees would never make a single probowl playing in windy Chicago.

Brady, Manning, Manning, Rodgers, Cutler (yup cutler) are more talented than Drew Brees

This canard that Brees cannot play outdoors is asinine. Yes, his numbers are better in the dome, but he set the Big Ten Conference record for yards passing and touchdowns at PURDUE, and led PURDUE to the Rose Bowl for the only time in about 75 years. Not sure what dome PURDUE plays in. He was also NFL Comeback player of the year in 2004 with SAN DIEGO. His problems in San Diego had as much to do with his dingbat coach Marty Schottenheimer who was in love with Doug Flutie, as they did with Brees’ own performance.

As for Eli Manning, head to head the last three times they have played – including once in the Meadowlands – the Saints have won 30-7, 48-27, and 49-24. Here is a Giants web site which compares Manning and Brees career ROAD records. They are VERY close.

Those who are saying Brees single handily won that Super Bowl are insane and are novice football fans. It is a team game. I don’t think it was Brees who intercepted that pass that put the game away. I don’t think it was Brees blocking all those games either. The Saints have needs on their team. Their secondary is bad and their linebackers are weak.

If you think Brees should get paid upwards of 20million show me the other teams that are winning SBs with paying their QBs like that? They are fewer than those paying them around 10million a year.

stanklepoot, you have no concept of the salary cap. When you allocate all your money in one position your whole team becomes weak and where you may be a decent team you will never become a great team. The Saints have the pieces to win a few more championships but they won’t be keeping them all if the give Brees the contract he is asking for at the moment.

It isn’t just about drafting well it is about drafting well and keeping the good players around your QB. The Saints have a lot of guys over these next few years they would also like to keep. You seem to be of the mind that if you have the QB everything else is filler. Not true, this is the ultimate team game and if anyone on that team gets to greedy if effects the whole team.

I think Breese is one of the top QBs in the league and probably should be paid like one. My only concern with him is his numbers are skewed a bit. Take him out of the doom and his numbers are average. He plays in a system that allows for a QB to rack up numbers. He benefits from having so many weapons that provide mismatches for defenses. Sprooles and Grahm alone would make any average QB even better.

Just my thoughts.

Wow, this reminds me so much of the situation with the Chargers: Brees wanted to be paid like an elite, franchise, quarterback, and they refused, so Brees walked.

The Saints are going to be kicking themselves if they miss the playoffs because Chase Daniel is their starting QB next year.

Not to mention, Brees has become a huge beacon of goodwill for the team in New Orleans. The way he led them to a Superbowl when the city was down and out hasn’t been forgotten there…

Playing with fire! New Orleans can use the Franchise Tag to keep the peace, but if Loomis had any sense, he will not drag this out. Bree’s may love New Orleans, but he can easily find another city he likes, with a franchise that will pay him.
