What did the Saints have before Brees? Nothing!

Play games with Brees and you'll end up burned. I expected better out of the Saints and hope Brees sees how little he really means to this team.

The Redskins are looking for a quality QB and Brees would be a definite upgrade.

I guess Bree’s forgets he threw 2 interceptions in the playoff game against the 40 whiners.
---------------------------------------------------
My "40 whiners" had/still have the best defense in the NFL. It just proves he's human.

That being said, if the Saints put the tag him and Brees still decides to walk my 49ers will take him AND Colston and go on to win 3 SBs in a row!

Even if the Saints keep Brees your hopes of winning the SB in NO will be dashed if SF appears on your schedule. FEAR THIS! <3

Drew brees deserves a big contract! Sure! But the reality is that if the Saints give him that much there just isn't enough left to field a quality team around him. And teams need to keep some cushion for injuries and such. Brady has won 3 SBs and played in 5. Drew has played in one and won one. Why should Brees get more money than Brady? Peyton Manning was way overpaid and he has only one ring. Drew don't deserve any more than what ever Brady is getting. Brees knows all this yet he is trying to milk the Saints for every dime he can. He's not looking like such a nice guy to me anymore. In fact it was mostly eyewash anyway. Just going thru the motions to create a good impression. Now here he is with a chance to show he is a great guy and sign a reasonable contract to help save the team and he won't do it. Sad! Geaux Saints!

What is wrong with you people?
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE DREW AND SEAN PAYTON! THEY ARE THE BEST.

Is he a great QB? Yes. Is he a great PERSON, FATHER, AND HUSBAND? ABSOLUTELY!Drew deserves a raise and more. Look at other players who make much more, do they deserve it?

I grew up in Lousiana and did not follow the Saints (because the team was awful) until Drew signed on. Drew has brought us a long way since Katrina and the team needs to stay that way.

Saints MANAGEMENT get off the pot and do your jobs. Save our team!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gotta agree with an earlier comment- why all this last minute, deadline deals?? Sounds like the management system leaders of the Saints sat on their butts by not negotiating earlier. Do YOU wait until you are on the toliet and then say oh-no we are out of toliet paper - gonna have to get more. Its bought in advance to never run out. Well re-working contracts should be done BEFORE the last minute. Somebody has to think ahead!
Every body have a different opinion about Brees - doesn't matter, hes the best N.O. has ever had-period. If they don't want to give him a long term contract for the money he wants, negotiate same money for a shorter time , maybe 4 yrs. instead of 6. All boils down to its a business and the all mighty dollar. Pro-players only have so many years then they have to retire because their skills drop off or they are to banged up with health problems to continue, Hell yes they want as much as possible during their peak years- wouldn't you??? Pay the man.

The Saints just need to be willing to front load a little more of the money.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
I don't know how tight the Saints are against the cap right now but that may be tough to do if they are. The cap is not set to rise significantly until 2014 when the new tv money kicks in.

I agree with consolecomplaints, etc, the Saints fans who think it's unwise to spend that much of the cap on one player. I agree that it's the Payton-Brees dynamic, not one or the other that makes them better. When you have great coaching you can survive better the loss of even a great player. Like my team did in 08 when TB was lost for the year. If TB had wanted 1/6 of the cap, as great as I think he is...no way would I be happy with/ok with that.

One of the biggest problems with the Colts was not only failure to have a backup QB prepared, but also that they had a bad caching staff. That's why they were fired too in the purge. If they had a staff like NO or NE or GB, etc. they would have been competitive, even sans PM.

He doesn’t have as much leverage as you claim. He can’t play in the elements come winter. Yes, he is excellent in that dome, which is all the more reason why he should knock it off and agree to terms. He wouldn’t be able to do what Eli does in East Rutherford in December and January, I KNOW THAT.
________________________________
And how, exactly, do you KNOW THAT? The fact that Brees plays on a team that plays in a dome doesn’t necessarily mean that Brees can’t play well outside of a dome. If I remember correctly, Brees played at Purdue in college, and if you don’t think Big 10 players know how to play in inclement weather, you’re just kidding yourself.

Proof is in the pudding. The playoffs and shaky games in the elements OUTSIDE of the dome -- prove my assertion.

Plenty of people on this site calling him "Drew Greed" during the lockout. Is he a great QB? Yes. Is he a great person? Who knows - to the media maybe.
There comes a point when there needs to be a balance between money and winning to appease the fans.
Peyton Manning demanded to be the highest paid player at the sacrafice of being able to put talent around him and it worked because he still won and you saw what the team was without him.
Pay Brees like he wants you will quickly find out how good he really is because you will immediately be without Hicks and Colston.
We'll See.

I'm tired of all the "dome stats" talk. There are only about 3 teams that can honestly say they would take their qb over Brees RIGHT NOW (Pats, Pack, and I'll give you the Lions if you want to use Brees' age against him. I like Eli, but Brees is better.). If you're throwing out "dome stats" talk you're implying someone else can come in and do what he does? The fact is there is no one available that can do what he does, so he's worth every penny.

Now I have thought all along, if somehow Brees digs in too hard, he could hit the road and be replaced by Peyton. I don't think it would be a great move, but I'm sure Peyton would love playing in another dome, for his hometown, for a super bowl ready team. Not gonna happen because Brees doesn't want to leave, but it would be one heck of a backup plan.

There's a reason why Will Smith's contract is being restructured right now. They are going to sign Brees before Monday, franchise Nicks, and attempt to sign Colston to a deal.

Why do most folks assume the holdup is due to Brees wanting more money? Do you have access to inside information that no one else does? Have you spoken directly to Brees and/or Mickey Loomis?

The Saints have a chance to do something this year that has never been done before in the history of the nfl, win the SB on their homefield.
I'd like to think this group realizes that, and will put the team first in this situation. Will they? Who knows, maybe not. We'll know by monday.

I’d like to think this group realizes that, and will put the team first in this situation. Will they? Who knows, maybe not. We’ll know by monday.

Brees represents his family first, the Union 2nd and the Saints and New Orleans 3rd. a player that servred on the NFLPA exec board is not going to be Tagged especially afer he sued the league asking to be exempted. I say he sits till he gets what he wants, which may be when the Saints are 1-4. Dont blame Brees. Blame Loomis. Could have avoided this after the SB with an extension in the uncapped 2010 season. Long term deal with a huge roster bonus which would not have been spread against the term of the contract and would not count toward the CAP since there was not one. Loomis is not the guru he is made out to be.

I guess Bree's forgets he threw 2 interceptions in the playoff game against the 40 whiners. He lost to the scrub Seattle sea-hawks the year before that. Drew is a good QB but he is NOT great. He does NOT ever play well on the road. I believe the Saints brass are tired of him being so spoiled. Eli Manning has 2 rings and he beat the 40 Whiners on the ROAD. Drew Bree's will never win a playoff game on the road. I don't know why. But i think the Saints are thinking, why pay a QB the whole bank that only plays well at home. Sure he's a good man. But Drew can't win by himself. The Saints need to completely rebuild their high school defense. How can they do that if Drew gets all the money. Drew is being a Whiny little selfish rich boy. I have a policy i always follow in life, "Never feel sorry for a millionaire"! If coach would have got Romo away from the Cowboys when he was hired by the Saints the Saints would still have a SB ring. Maybe 2 or 3. Drew is not GOD. He's really short, he can't scramble at all, and he plays horrible on the road. For all the money Drew wants it would make more sense to trade him for a boat-load of picks and draft Luck or Griffin and rebuild our sorry defense. Geaux Saints!

consolecomplaints says:Mar 1, 2012 11:36 PM
If I remember correctly, in some years of his contract, Peyton Manning was making $23 million a year.

Tom Condon, also represents Drew Brees, and is probably asking for $23 million a year or so.

Tom Brady makes about $18-$19 million a year, if I remember correctly.

$23-$18 million is a $5 million dollar difference.

Saints are talking Tom Brady money, Codon is talking Peyton Manning money.

No player is worth 1/6 of the entire salary cap. Look at the Colts when Manning got injured.

Brees takes $18-$19 million a year with tons of guaranteed money. end of story.
---------------------------------------------------------

First off Brady's contract was 2 years ago, second this is post CBA. Thats why there is a rookie cap so veterans can make more money. 20-22 million dollars a year is about what hes worth and earned. He played the last 6 years at 12 million a year if I remember correctly.

before we use peyton as a reason for why a player is not worth 1/6th the salary cap, why dont we take a look.
2010 colt 10-6
2011 colts 2-14

you also probably want to take a look at the colts for the past 10 years

You wanna rethink that statement.

If brees wants to take a home town discount I see no problem with that, but as it stands right now his fair market value is worth 20+ million a year.

Some people may not like that, but this is the reality. Veterans were suppose to cash in after the CBA was negotiated. Before we get to the "the poor owners crowd" lets remember they are saving a lot of money paying the rookies, take a look at Newtons contract compared to same bradfords contract.

People who are so quick to defend Brees need to realize he is asking for $24 million a year. That is a historic contract and significantly higher than Tom Brady, who already has THREE rings under his belt.

As a Saints fan, I'm not so sure I want Drew Brees to completely gut the team just to get the money he believes he deserves. Do not forget, Drew Brees didn't amount to that much on a somewhat decent team like the Chargers. Sean Payton deserves just as much credit for turning the Saints around as Drew Brees does.

Now having said all this, I do hope they find a way forward, but if Brees' contract demands are so high that the Saints were forced to let Nicks, Colston, and Meachem go, then I say franchise tag the man and see where that leads.
