Redskins inform Fred Davis he’s getting the franchise tag

It’s turning into tag day in the NFL.

Redskins tight end Fred Davis is the latest player to be informed that he’s getting the franchise tag, according to ESPN 980 in Washington. It has since been confirmed elsewhere.

This move was always expected. As Washington’s most explosive offensive player, the Redskins couldn’t let Davis go. With recent suspension for marijuana hanging over his head, Davis also isn’t a great candidate for a long-term deal. (Unless he takes a discount.)

Now the Redskins just need to find someone to throw Davis the ball. That should be no problem.

UPDATE 2:37 p.m. ET:  Multiple league sources tell PFT that it’s not official, yet.

I think this was a good idea. He can play under the tag this year and next. If he can stay clean for the next two years then give him a contract. Landry cannot stay on the field, but I think they get something done with him. Good start to this very long off season. HTTR!

I am ok with saying goodbye to LL30 – he just cannot stay healthy. Vinny dumb lucked into a good draft pick with Davis and it is a good move to keep him.

I bet out of all the quarterback needy teams this year, the Redskins would be the ones to screw up and go another year without the franchise answer.

Redskins: “Sorry Fred, we’re only going to pay you a ton of money for one year because you’re a pothead.”

    Fred: [cough cough] “Word.”
