Getty ImagesWell, one prediction from our newly updated franchise tag primer should prove correct.
Chargers G.M. A.J. Smith said on XERPS radio in San Diego (via NFL.com) that Vincent Jackson is likely to hit the free agent market if the Chargers can’t get him to sign a long-term deal before March 13.
“Right now, I’m not real comfortable with what I see for a tag, but we haven’t ruled it out yet because we have so much to do, and we have different levels of plans that we do with different scenarios,” Smith said.
So you’re saying there’s a chance?
“I can tell you right out front, it’s highly unlikely, and every time I look at that situation, I don’t like it, I still don’t like it, but we’ll see. We’ll see where that goes,” Smith said.
It would be a typical A.J. Smith move to surprise everyone at the last minute and retain Vincent Jackson, if only to confound the media and frustrate Jackson’s agents for another season. Smith knows that it will be extremely difficult to retain Jackson if he hits the open market.

See you in j ville. 82 and sunny
Good its too much money for him.
No VJax…..better get a matching replacement or San Diego is done next year. Rivers needs skilled target like VJax.
Show him the money Cleveland
Go to the Rams
Chicago’s waiting, Virginia has the pen ready to go , the check book is open….
Oakland ?
I’m pretty sure the Chargers need to keep their only receiver who isn’t made of glass.
AJ Smith being stubborn when it comes to VJax?!?
What a shock.
Brady to Jackson, or Gronk, or Hernandez, or Welker… yep, that’ll work.
come to chicago.. cutler needs a #1
Chi town would be a great fit….but as a viking fan i would like to see him in purple and gold.
Good luck with that San Diego. You got a tight end whose body has transformed into Alge Crumpler’s (funny shaped and slow), no quality wideouts, and a running back made out of glass.
Welcome to DC VJax Hail!
I can see him landing with the Rams or the Bears, or another team with an established quarterback that badly needs a good receiver. I don’t see him wanting to go to a team that has a messy situation at quarterback. I don’t know why any good free agent player would want to sign in Oakland.
Well, I don’t know where he will end up but one thing for sure, Tampa can outbid anyone. The weather this time of year is very similar to San Diego and he gets to play on one of the best surfaces in the league. Don’t forget there is no state income tax either.
Mike Shannahan wanted to draft V JAX back in 05 we have tons of cap space and no number1 WR he’ll be DC…Now who’s throwing the ball is the question.
If he lands in New Orleans, AJ ill finally have that dominant offensive team he has always dreamed about. They will be wearing the wrong uni’s but what the hell, right? Its just a player and you can always get another one.
I have to think he would look sharp in the Burg and Gold.
Hail!
SF is waving big bills at experienced WRs this year!
AJ also said in the same interview that VJ would be the only Charger free agent that he would put the franchise tag on. Jeez, the reporting here is mediocre.
90 percent chance he lands in sf if sd doesn’t sign him or we sign another wr before him
