Getty ImagesThe news that the Saints have used their franchise tag on quarterback Drew Brees is good news to guard Carl Nicks.
Nicks told the New Orleans Times Picayune that he was stressed about the possibility that the franchise tag could keep him from testing the market, and that he’s now relieved he knows that he’ll have the opportunity to talk to every other team on March 13.
“Now I kinda know how free agency will go,” Nicks said. “The anxiety’s still there, but I’m a little calmer.”
Nicks hasn’t received an offer from the Saints yet, but he said he’s still hoping that he and the Saints work out a long-term deal before free agency starts.
“It would be nice, definitely,” Nicks said. “It’d be just perfect. I wouldn’t have to stress, I’d just worry about handling my business.”
But it appears more likely that Nicks will be testing the market when the market opens.

About to get paid … from new team.
San Diego.
Bring him to Atlanta Dimitroff!
Minnesota.. it will happen
Its a given he’s going to Tampa..
1st player Jerry Reese should call in free agency, would instantly stabilize our O-line, not sure we can afford him.
Better start looking at houses in dallas baby YEAIYAHHH!!
Put him right between Jake & Pounce, now that would get 18 fired up behind center!
KC can give Manning 13-18 and try to get nicks with the left over change.
I have no idea where Nicks will go but where he ends up that teams O-Line just got a whole lot better….
Welcome to the Falcons Mr. Nicks
hope you enjoy that FAT contract!! (one can only hope)
I’d rather develop guys who make big money in free agency than pay them. Develop them for small money, let them go to some other sucker, and then replace them with the next developing player. You pay your QB the big money – not a guard.
Can’t wait to see who pays this GUARD all sorts of money so he can turn their franchise around.. Ya know.. cause guards can do that..
Yeah it must be horrible to be locked into a contract that pays like a top 10 talent at your position playing for the one team that gave you a chance. How would survive?
Vikes Sign Nicks. Draft Claiborne.
No team needs to tie $20 million at the guard position much less the Saints. Aaron Kromer is an awesome o-line coach . Look at what he has gotten out of Bushrod, de la Puente and Strief. He’ll prolly kick de la Puente over to guard and promote Matt Tenant to center…..problem solved…next question.
Eagles need better OL perfict fit with Jason peters
I’ll admit i hardly watch the saints as a steeler fan, but any chance he’s one of those guys who plays on the o line for a SUPER qb who gets rid of the ball real quick and ends up being average on a new team? A qb like brees opens up the run game and makes nicks job of holding blocks in the pass game a lot easier.
Just a thought, but huge interior offensive line contracts generally dont seem to be worth it, unless the guys an elite all pro player for years to come.
I wonder if he’ll insist on bounties instead of incentives? Ka-ching !
A real good guard can find a home it Lions Country.
‘Stressed out’ about gettin’ paid millons. Not real life. Sickening talk.
A team will overpay on a guard, really? they are the cheapest lineman in the league, nicks is a good pass blocker and ok in run blocking, but when you have a qb who can get the ball out quickly, it’s a big help…nicks can walk, but if he goes to a sorry team with a bad qb..good luck with that cause he may not be worth what he maybe asking for.
I like how people are thumbs downing my previous comment. I would love, LOVE for anyone to name any guard EVER signed as a FA that put a team over the top. Or even a team that just drafted a guard that was really good which caused them to make it to the next level. I’m sorry but I would never pay more than 4.5 mil a year for a guard. An i’d only pay one that sort of money. Get some dominate tackles and a smart center and you’ll be fine.
I’m just curious, do the Posters who want the player to go to there team and Post that actually think the Player is reading this, and it’s going to have an effect on his decision? DOH! Must be teen spirit…
Vikings sign Nicks…draft Kalil!! GIGGITY
Cincinnati has 2 gaping holes @ guard & a ton of cap room. No way they ever spend the $$ on Nicks but it would be a perfect fit for both. They have the jack to fit him under the cap and have a need with an up and coming offense. Too bad no Free Agents ever take Cincinnati seriously.
Come to Miami, Carl! Peyton is going to need your help!
“I’m just curious, do the Posters who want the player to go to there team and Post that actually think the Player is reading this, and it’s going to have an effect on his decision? ”
Let me guess, you never, ever yell at the TV, right? Suuuuure you don’t.
Nicks needs to do himself a favor and get out of New Orleans. That team is about to get rocked for getting caught by their own stupidity and it’s going to have a negative impact for years to come.
I got a bad feeling he’s going to Dallas.
Any AFC West team would make sense to me.
Outside of that, maybe Chicago?
Vikes, sign Nicks draft kalil and all of a sudden Ponder looks more upright! It’s a nice thought but so is adding two free agent DB’S This sure is a fun time of the year! For all Teams.
@mac3333…..
No free agents take Cincy seriously because of Mike Brown. He’s too cheap to pay for anybody. It’s no wonder why no one takes them seriously.
I like how he says he knows how free agency will go, and that he is relieved about not getting the tag, BUT he still would like to get a deal done before free agency.
What a load.
If he wanted a deal with the Saints, tag shouldn’t matter as it would be better for Saints to get him signed long term so as not to pay him whatever tag costs are.
I think nicks might be a bit overrated. Dont get me wrong, he was a top 3 guard last year. But that was also in a walk year with a qb that gets rid of the ball real quick.
I still think nicks was the second best guard on the saints.
He is going to get big money, I just think if it’s not with te saints he may end up a free agent bust .
I feel the same way about Mathis for my birds. I just think both players will be the best they can be on their current teams
Welcome to Minnesota Maybe you can bunk with Kalil in Mankato this summer.
That car outside your house, has Jerry Jones and a lot of strippers and money in it. Don’t be scared.. You like it
Look at what he has gotten out of Bushrod, de la Puente and Strief. He’ll prolly kick de la Puente over to guard and promote Matt Tenant to center…..problem solved…next question.

If Tenant could play, Krutz and de la Puente would not have played center THIS year.
Hey Carl…better be careful. The Saints may put a bounty out on you!
Just saw Nicks looking at houses with a realtor in Tampa! As a Saints fan this is real depressing, they are loaded with young talent and about to take over!
Jerruh world doesn’t have the cap room da skins have I can see Nicks in Burgundy and gold next year…
Nicks is a great player. But he’s a guard, no way if I was a GM I would give this guy the 55+ million dollar deal he is looking for. Sorry.
I have no doubt he’ll stay within the division and stick it to his former team twice a year.
Welcome to Tampa, Mr Nicks!!
