Looking back on a 2011 in which he was named the NFL’s defensive player of the year, Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs says it all started with the lockout.

According to Suggs, a relaxing spring and summer free of minicamps and organized team activities was just what his body needed to be rested and at peak form in the fall.

“Last year, to be totally honest with you, I had the time of my life during the lockout and wasn’t in a hurry to get back to work,” Suggs said on WHB in Kansas City, via SportsRadioInterviews.com. “I think that’s why, in total, I ended up having the season that I did. A lot of guys ended up pushing themselves too hard and ended up getting hurt trying to get ready for mini-camps and OTAs. Fortunately we didn’t have that burden on our shoulders and that’s why I think I had a great year.”

Suggs said he’s expecting to thoroughly enjoy this offseason as well, and that time to unwind off the field is an important part of being a productive player on the field.

“We get to have real life,” Suggs said. “This is going to be awesome.”

If an awesome offseason is what it takes for Suggs to play in 2012 like he did in 2011, the Ravens should encourage him to take all the time off he wants.
