Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Bucs have agreed to terms on a contract extension with offensive lineman Jeremy Zuttah.

Greg Schiano coached Zuttah at Rutgers, and after taking the Buccaneers’ job quickly identified him as a priority for the team to re-sign. Zuttah can play four positions on the line. He started 14 games in 2011, 13 at left guard and one at center.

Zuttah projects as the Bucs’ starting left guard in 2012. Davin Joseph is the right guard, and Jeff Faine is tentatively expected back at center despite a $5.925 million base salary.

According to Holder, the Bucs will now turn their focus to free agent kicker Connor Barth. The sides have until Monday’s 4 p.m. franchise tag deadline to negotiate, but Holder expects Barth to be tagged barring a last-minute breakthrough in talks.

  1. Faine is overpriced but good, Zuttah is an up and comer, Joseph is a top 10 guard in the league. Penn can be a top 10 LT in the league, if they could get some better play at RT and WR and some help on defense they could be back to competing for a playoff spot

  2. Its aboug that time we need to sign a few big free agents and save the rest to sign draft picks and still have most to sign the big free agents next year too but this year we need a speedy WR (V-Jaz), CB (Finnegan or Carr), RB (Richardson in the draft), LB (big need to upgrade every spot within the next 2 season either by FA or by draft), S (im not sure of the safety free agents this year but we have the $ to get the best one available if he is worth it) and last but not least QB (Peyton Manning)…. Just kidding….GO BUCS!!!

  3. More likely to be the starting Center with Faine on the way out.
Look for the Bucs to make a play for Nicks or Grubbs. And/Or draft a guard.

  4. WoooHooo! Now we are starting to put it together. Still not holding my breath about free agency spending ! That will be the key. They can’t depend on the draft this year. GO BUCS

  5. Cut Faine and Trueblood and sign Carl Nicks and Anthony Collins…shouldn’t have too much trouble keeping Josh Freeman upright with Penn, Nicks, Zuttah, Joseph, and Collins in front of him.

  6. I personally am very happy that they agreed on this extention. I personally wouldn’t put a tag on Barth, there is plenty of talent out there…

With that in mind, Let’s go after some FA’s with the check book open. It will grab a lot of media coverage, that the Bucs need to re-invent their fan base that they so desparately need the get the ticket sales going this year. Sign some big names, and watch what happens.

As tropboi11 said, I would agree with him 100%, I would love to see C. Finny on the Bucs. I live in Tennesssee, he is a huge Fan favorate here, and would be in Tampa. Barber won’t be around forever, and who knows about Talib. The Bucs have the money, I just hope they spend it.
