Everyone says this isn't as bad as the media is making this out to be, but I will say this and then will go back under my rock. This is BIG!!, with coaches and players contributing to fund which pays players based on game changing "plays"(sacks, ints, TFL's, etc.) not because its morally wrong, but it circumvents the salary cap. We have no idea just how much money went out every week to players based on their performance, but that is what contract incentives and playtime bonuses at the end of the year are for, if this was a fund for "knocking opposing playmakers from the game" then suspensions beyond a season must be on the table. Now, if the allegations of "outside money"(see: http://mike-freeman.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6264363/35066335) coming in to fund these bounties are true, this leaves the field of BIG and becomes HUMONGOUS. The potential to affect the outcome of an "NFL contest" by contributing a bounty fund is so damaging to the integrity of the game, the implications are frightning. Here is a example: If I bet heavily on NFL games($100,000) and I have knowledge that there is a bounty of a certain amount on a certain player, why wouldn't I bet accordingly. If I can "hedge" my bet, by contributing to the fund I'm all in. If the NFL has concluded this investigation, trust me it travels down corridors the NFL does not want to be associated with.

Well, Roger that is what's important to the sport, YOUR LEGACY. Commissioner you might as well ruin the upcoming season with fines and suspensions. Maybe the Saints won't be able to field a team because of you. Go ahead genius and do your worst.

This bounty business is a non story. How many starters from the opposing teams were taken out of the game in the past three seasons? My point is the bounties were ineffective. The Saints had a mediocre defensive team and a mediocre defensive coach that couldn't motivate his players.

The ignorance of Saints fans is completely shocking to me......What is so hard to understand? A two time felon who isn't officially part of the Saints organization contributed money to the pool of cash paid to Saints players to injure opposing players.

Would it be okay if college boosters paid players for injuring opponents?

Would it be okay for parents to fund payments to high school kids for injuring opponents?

Would it be okay all defensive players in the NFL or the NFLPA to fund a program where cash payments are paid to anyone who can knock an opposing QB out of a game?

Of course not.....the answer is obvious and only an idiot would try to justify this behavior. The Saints coaching staff was wrong and the Saints players were wrong.....all of them will be severely punished and they should be punished. It's hard enough to stay healthy in the NFL without some moron trying to take out your knees so he can get an extra $1,000 bonus.

Goodell keeps talking about "changing the culture of the game." What the hell does that mean? Goodell hasn't even tried to explain what a "different" football culture looks like. All he does is whine about hard hits and speak out of both sides about "player safety" as if there ACTUALLY is a safety issue - don't cite injured ex-players; they have to accept responsibility for their injuries; if Kevin Turner or whoever has ALS, I'm sorry, that's the player's responsibility; this wasn't inflicted on him by a faceless "football culture" or by some "bounty" program.

Roger Goodell is furious because he does not understand the sport over which he presides - he showed that in Spygate by refusing to understand league bylaws (which showed Belichick was well within his game rights to videotape from the sidelines) and now he shows it by treating legitimate football hitting as some kind of criminal act (and not knowing the difference between clean hits and dirty hits).

LOL. You guys think you actually KNOW something. Giving your wish list scenarios. Williams should get this much time. Payton this. Loomis, Vilma and let's just suspend the entire team.

What profound jerks. You don't know squat. Those are your wishes based upon how you DON'T want to face the Saints in 2012.

The suspensions will be staggered. The fines will be significant but not so much that any fan would notice. So get a grip and wait for the other shoe to fall as YOUR team gets called up for the same damn thing.

What morons.

I don't see this as being about Goodell.

You guys are just reaching. Some pretty irrational crap going on here.

This is about the players and the game.

Wonder if college football fans would like Goodell to take over administrating that?

What about the NBA?

How about if Goodell replaced the nutbar at FIFA? The game would probably pick up 3 billion in revenue in the first year and the on field product would probably improve immensely.

The NFL is the best sports league in the world for a reason. I don't see Goodell as the problem; I see nutjob yahoo's who react without thinking as the only problem. That and the owner of the Cleveland Browns.

Goodell is attacking the city of New Orleans, smearing the city by portraying it with an exaggerated mark as a ‘violent slum city,’ by putting all the blame and spotlight on the Saints for something that there is every indication is very common in many other NFL franchises. There was a TV show called K-Ville that did this, and it got canceled and off TV quick. I don’t know why Gooddell wants to throw New Orleans under the bus while giving a free pass to the corruption in Washington DC.

Really please, why Washington hasn't Gregg been in Buffalo, Tennessee, Jacksonville as well...see the problem is they helped N.O. win a Super Bowl after Katrina put them on the map and on a pedestal like they were holier than though, and then Who Dey just went crazy...N.O. is getting this treatment because they were the team that got busted investigated and told to stop and continued to do so...NOT Washington nor Buffalo, Tennessee or Jacksonville....

To those who say there is no difference in rewarding a college players with a sticker for a big hit ask this question? Can you pay a bill with that sticker? NO...But hundreds or thousands of dollars for a hit or injury you can plus the additional income could put a team over the CAP. In addition if that income isn't reported the IRS will get involved and when Vilma offers 10k to knockout Farve in the NFC Championship game and it happens and huge amounts of money are paid out according to Fajita the Saints LB in 2009.Spygate was wrong, but this is wrong on so many levels and Williams lied to Goodell and the Saints where told to stop and ignored the NFL...they will pay for all of it severely.
3 yrs ban for Williams
1 yr ban for Payton
Loomis huge fine
Vilma max fine and 8 games susp.
Benson max fine
And the loss of draft picks over the next 3 yers 2 draft picks per year within the 1st 4 rounds total of 6 draft picks and no Franchise tag for 3 years 1 year for each year the bounty was run. This will send a message loud and clear.

We still have the best offense in football, point blank. Sean Payton didnt call plays or make the gameplan, our OC Pete Carmichael did. Our defense wasnt any good last year to begin with, they only can get better. We were planning on cutting Vilma anyway and G.Williams is already gone. If Payton is suspended for the year so what.. Slide Spags over as the interim HC for the year and have Carmichael call the plays on offense just like he did last year. As for as draft picks... who cares... we didnt particularly draft great in the 1st 2 rounds to begin with. i.e Colston 7th, Nicks 3rd, Evans 5th Pierre Thomas undrafted, Lance Moore undrafted..
Goodell is bad!

OK, I get it.

I am always looking for things to complain about when it comes to "the man."

Tell me once again, why is he bad?

I want to dislike him and be angry about his changes.

I guess his changes to the some of the hits and tackles have fundementally changed the game of football. OK, that is bad.

But, I don't see the change that all of you say you see. I occasionally notice a Linebacker or Safety pull up a little on the tackle. In some cases, possibly I notice that maybe he took the ballcarrier down a little differently than he would have a few years ago. But, I don't see a fundamental change in the game. So, I need your enlightenment.

The game of football actually still looks the same -at least to the people yelling and screaming in my living room and me.

I imagine that Steeler fan misses Harrison smashing his forehead into Josh Cribb's temple or blindside smashing Massaquois head off, but Harrison still provides that cheap shot Steeler fan has grown to love - reference ripping his helmet into the back of McCoy's head. I'm trying to figure out what Goodell has done to victimize Harrison and Steeler nation. They are so tough - as long as the opponent isn't looking. Now we have the Saints and Redskin fans telling us how "real" football is being ruined by this spoilsport.

I played football. I've been pancaked, blasted, and actually delivered some good hits. I really appreciate a great, solid tackle.

The issue of using the rules to make the game safer for the guys playing it seems like a good idea to me. I don't wan't to see the game change, but I can't argue that the game has really changed that much. Certainly not enough to make me concerned.

So, real man's football requires helmet to helmet hits. Requires Harrison cheapshots. Requires taking shots at the sides of guys knees. Requires hitting Farve late after every play. This is what is requried in order to not be wussies? Must be, because it seems to me those are the only changes that I see. Funny, I don't miss them all that much.

Bottom line, I will always look at this issue, I always have, from the vantage point of how I felt when watching a recent interview with Earl Campbell. Campbell was a member of a division rival and he always made life hell for opponents. To see him barely able to talk without drooling all over himself shook me up pretty good.

Whenever I read some of you guy's "all knowing" indignation on how this clean up is ruining football, Earl Campbell's interview comes to mind.

And, I then dismiss most everything you say.

OLinemen should get bounties for every DL or LB they put out with the game with crack blocks. Funny how defensive players whine about this.

No, hurt is to inflict pain. Not all pain is the result of an injury. Would you classify a player who had to leave the game because he had the wind knocked out of him as "injured"?

We know signals are concealed on the field, we know different players or coaches use a different indicator every play, we know the signals change constantly.... if someone was relying on tape and you knew it, wouldnt you use that against them?

Anyway, please explain the huge benefit the Pats got by sending a 24 year old liberal arts major to tape something in plain view of 70,000K people that couldnt be used in game.
