I don't know how the Niners cap situation is doing, but if they could afford to sign Mike Wallace and/or Reggie Wayne coupled with Manning, they would be heavy favorites to win the the SuperBowl, period. Could you imagine that nasty D with Manning, Wallace, Davis and Gore.....teams would be and should be terrified!

@nohopeleft... Really? Eli laughed at our Defense? Dude was gettin smacked around the field like a Pinata. I guarantee you he was not laughing.

If our idiot Return man didn't touch the ball the first time he gave up a turnover, Eli woulda been cryin on big brother's shoulder.

You Smurf fans should be sending Kyle Williams some incredibly expensive gift baskets for those two EffUps. Without em the 9ers would have gone to the Big Game and done to Brady what they did to Manning. Moron.

To sbxxix, the nfc west looks nothing like the nfc east. It is the toughest division in football and currently home to the SB champion Giants. Who cares if the records are the same, when the last time a team from the nfc west won anything? Besides the man they call Peyton will not be the same HOFer he was before injury. He will end up fooling some gm to pay big bucks for his ability to bring fans to the stadium. He wont have the offensive line he had nor the recievers he had. In fact he is better off stayin in indy for a paycut then going somewhere to play a few games before a career en
ding injury.

I'll give your team credit for winning the big game however, everyone who watched that game knows the 49ers lost that game. They were the better team but didn't have the better day. If you really think the NFC East is better take a second look at their matchups against the NFC West in the regular season. The NFC East has one legit team and that's the Giants. Good division no question about it, but they're not what they use to be when they would send three teams to the playoffs. I just think people need to know the 49ers are for real and their division has nothing to do with how good they are. I'm not trying to take anything away from the NFC East, I'm just trying to give credit where it's due

Can’t see Manning playing for that psycho coach. The niners may have won a lot of games last year, but they did it with a team put together by Singletary.

-----------

You, my friend.....are a fool. If anybody put the team together it was Mike Nolan. On top of that Harbaugh gutted our D last year...The only people who remained starters from the year before were Willis, J. Smith, Goldson, Haralson & Sopoaga.

Suck It!

Funniest post is you claiming the 49ers are a one hit wonder. You obvioulsy didn't watch their defense this season. They will be ultra competitive for years to come with Harbaugh leading the charge.

Also, the Chiefs? Get outta here with that garbage!

As tempting as this is, it's a bad idea for several reasons:

- Offensive line - The 49ers Offensive Line has under-performed for years. They did no better this year, giving up the most sacks in the NFL. Peyton Manning coming off all those neck surgeries would be running for his life, and Manning has never been one known for his legs.

- Wide Receivers - One of the biggest deficits the 49ers had last season, especially against the Giants in the NFC championship game, was that their wide receivers were not able to get open. Granted Morgan and Ginn were injured, but neither one of those guys are what you would consider elite (or anything above a slot receiver, really), and it's too easy for a strong secondary to blanket the receivers the 49ers have. Peyton, at this point, won't have any more targets then Alex Smith did.

- Team philosophy - There is every indication that Manning and Harbaugh would clash. Manning likes being the general on the field calling his own plays and making adjustments. Harbaugh likes micromanaging the offense. Eventually there would be fireworks. That is if Manning stayed healthy long enough for there to be fireworks.

In the end it could be a costly mistake, forcing the 49ers to make compromises to pay for Manning while ignoring other problems on the team (such as at WR, Offensive Line, and the Secondary). Teams that go for broke gambling on an aging elite veteran rarely come out on top, and generally the steps you have to take to make that happen hurt the franchise in the long term (see: Vikings). I want another superbowl for my 49ers as much as any fan, but I don't think this is the way to do it.

^^Vincent Jackson is soo overrated. He gives 2 games a year with 3 td's in those games and then goes to sleep.

Mike Wallace is a deep threat who is a better fit with Big arm Big Ben.

Manning is arguably top 3 QB of all-time

Everyone seems to forget Harbaugh loves athletic QBs. Plug Peyton into the Niners offense and it drastically alters the playbook. No chance in hell Peyton runs a designed QB sweep for a 28yd TD or picks up key first downs with his legs like Smith can do. Plus Baalke will not spend the kind of cash it will cost to bring him in, if they wont get into a bidding war for Vincent Jackson or Mike Wallace what the hell makes you think they will for a 35 year old QB coming off four neck surgeries???

Wow, just wow. Jerry is the man. But he's wrong. Remember when he trashed the 9ers for taking Smith? Saying something to the effect that Smith would never be a good QB?

Who was that guy under Center that led the 9ers to a 13-3 record again?

Jerry said we need better Receivers a few weeks ago. I buy that. He's the best to ever play the position. He knows was a good Receiver looks like.

But Manning? There is NO guarantee that Manning would even be a shadow of his former self after FOUR neck surgeries. If it's one, depending on the severity of the injury fine I might be more willing to listen. But Manning has had FOUR of them. He's not Joe Montana. You don't run out an pick up the guy based on his past in this regard. If he wants to be a Backup, I'm down with that. He's NEVER going to be the same Peyton Manning and he DOESN'T know the WCO.

Respectfully Jerry, I think you're off your nut for even suggesting this. Manning isn't elite anymore until he proves he is and I don't believe that's going to happen in a WCO behind a Line trying to gel into an impenetrable wall to protect the QB. How many times did Smith have to become Mobile last year? Yeah, let's just put that Statuesque QB behind it so we can end his career. I'd always wondered how the 9ers could stop the guy. Putting him on the field behind our Line is sheer Genius! xD

Talk of Manning bringing his potential next team is absurd. The Packers were a SB team and almost went undefeated but lost their first playoff game. There is no "one piece" solution. Manning would most benefit a team in the middle of the pack. He may be enough to get them to the playoffs and then anything can happen. If he goes to a horrible team it won't likely be enough. If he goes to the 49ers he would bring experience but that will be curbed by his lack of familiarity. He does not have the best track record in the playoffs as it is. Peyton Manning would not mean the difference for SF to get to the SB. It is a matter of a couple plays. If Ginn were healthy in the NFCC, the 49ers would have probably been in the SB --with Alex Smith. Don't fix what isn't broken.

And yet the giants won with a QB more like Alex Smith then Payton Manning.

The 9rs didnt need Payton to beat the Giants, they needed the Alex that showed up against the Saints.

While I will not deny it is obviosly a big upgrade at QB, the same money spent elsewhere will put them in better position for longer.

@JackLeone:

"With all due respect, I don’t want to hear Jerry Rice opinion on any other position unless it’s about a WR. Some of you all might not like that but I don’t care. That’s my opinion."

Yeah, sure. But the million "analysts" that are ex-QBs get to comment on guys who play the other 21 positions all the time, right? Oh, that's right, but QBs are usually ... and WRs are usually ... WRs just have to stay in their place, right? Please.

And by the way ... did you object to Jerry Rice's trashing Cam Newton last year? Was it OK for him to comment on QBs then? Oh, that's right, Cam Newton isn't REALLY a QB. Newton should be playing WR (or TE) like Rice because he is ... similar to Rice in certain areas, right?

Your opinion is total bunk. Alex Smith will likely never win another playoff game again. The 49ers need an upgrade, whether it is Smith or that kid from Nevada. He came into the NFL the same year as Aaron Rodgers. And his career high is 16 TD passes. How much more time does he get to develop?

I'm tired of all these clueless "football fans"... The NFC West is no longer the weakest division. If it wasn't for the Rams, that division would be right there with the AFC North or NFC South. The 49ers will probably not go 13-3 again, but 10-6 seems likely and it's only because they'll have a tougher schedule with them having to play 1st place teams next season. The 49ers are not a fluke team. Those who know and understand football will say the same. That team should have been in the playoffs 3 years ago. That defense has been solid for a few years now. All they need is a good receiver and they will have a a good shot a winning the Super Bowl next year. We don't need Manning either. Don't get me wrong it would be cool to see him wearing red and gold but I would rather have them build a super bowl team than to buy a super bowl team.
