No progress on new deal, but Manningham wants to remain with Giants

Eli Manning, Mario Manningham AP

Mario Manningham has sent some mixed messages about the likelihood that he’ll stay with the Giants as a free agent over the last few weeks, but he said Monday night that he wants to be back with the Super Bowl champs.

At a party for the release of a DVD commemorating the team’s win over the Patriots, Manningham answered questions about his desire to stay in New York. Manningham, who told an Ohio newspaper that there was a 75 percent chance he’d be leaving the team as a free agent before trying to walk it back, told Ohm Youngsimuk of ESPNNewYork.com that there has been no progress toward a new contract in his discussions with the team. That doesn’t change his desire to remain with the team.

“I want to be here,” Manningham said. “Because I feel like we can do a lot of damage in these next four to five years. That is just how I feel. We are all young. It is not up to me. I want to stay.”

If all things were equal, Manningham would probably remain in New York. Another team, without two other star receivers and the Giants’ salary cap issues, is likely to make a more lucrative offer for his services and that means Manningham, whose desire to remain with the Giants has never come with an indication that he’s looking for a below-market deal, is likely to be in a different uniform come next season.

He’d be giving up too much cash. Maybe he’ll end with the Bears alongside former UM teammate Henne. In this scenario, everyone’s invited except for Mike Hart.

Get ready for it. Manningham is s beast. We love him. What a player! 2 weeks ago the report was he all but gone. Most giants fans ripped him. Oh you giants fans love to flip flop once again.

Manningham needs to stay in NY, because Manningham doesn’t learn new offenses well, or quickly.

He either has to take a significant hometown discount or he has to be honest with himself that he can’t stay. Depending on what the cap ends up being, the Giants are either over it or pressed up against it. It’s not whether NY wants him or not, it’s about what NY can afford. If he’s willing to be paid as the third WR, which he is, the Giants can probably work the numbers. If he wants to be paid like a #1 WR, he needs to start packing his bags.

Which Giants fans ripped him? Name names. Because everyone I know and all the comments I read understand that he will go where the money is. As for flip flopping, that’s hysterical coming from an Eagles troll. Weren’t you the guys calling for Andy Reid and Juan’s heads on a platter? You’re a sad, little creature. Every Giants post, you feel compelled to show off your football ignorance again and again. Typical Philly trash. 1960 and counting….

So know we revert to name calling? Go back and look yourself. Especially articles on Osi, Jacobs, and even Eli. It’s not ignorance, it’s fact.

if by ripping him u mean that giants fans were pointing out that hes not a number 1 and that they dont want to waste crazy money on him when he’s a 3rd wr on this team then yes we are flip floppers.

    NFC EAST TROPHY COLLECTION:
    Dallas Cowgirls: 5 lombardi trophies
New York Giants: 4 lombardi trophies
    Washington Redskins: 3 lombardi trophies
    Philthydelphia Shegirls: 0 lombardi trophies

Its a disgrace that this dirty team is even considered a NFL team anymore. Never have and NEVER will win a Superbowl. EVER. and you can take that to the bank.

Wish there was a way to bring him back. We can never have too much ammo on our road to a Superbowl repeat.

@Dallassux I don’t recall any Giants fans hating on the guy. Your memory is about as bad as your quarterback.

  13. kahnsbushymustache says: Mar 6, 2012 12:30 PM

What happened to the deal he supposedly had already with Tampa Bay?

  14. zaggs says: Mar 6, 2012 12:37 PM

Truth is another team will over pay him. They’ll see his playoff production and forget about his big drops against SF and Dallas. The Giants will find someone else. Maybe Hixon or Barden, heck maybe even Jernigan will get a clue. Manningham ended up with only 1 more catch than Jake Ballard.

I am sure Eli Manning is wishing Mario Manningham returns but the New York Giants have more than capable receivers that could replace him. Manningham benefited enormously by Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz, and it’s important that he understands that. Never would I take a jab at a player for following the money, but, try to remember that the situation you’re in is a great one and if you play your cards right, would be beneficial to your career and bank account.

mario was a good giant and he will be missed. with that said, the guy did what he did playing alongside two absolute studs. i wish him the best wherever he lands….but he needs to be a complimentary receiver…he isnt “the” guy.

also, the giants will find a replacement for him. everyone was horrified over losing steve smith until they saw victor cruz. the giants already have a few in-house guys who can step up, not to mention the draft.

  17. justinwj says: Mar 6, 2012 1:52 PM

The Giants do not need him, he’s a fool if he takes less money and stays. He needs to let another team over pay him.

  18. tropboi11 says: Mar 6, 2012 3:08 PM

Tampa dont want him, we already have a #2 & #3 WR, we need a #1 (V-Jax im talking to you, come get paid homey), im a big hater of the NFC East but I would love to be in the position the Giants are in, badass WR’s just popping up and you able to get rid of good ones and please keep the Eagles jokes coming, I can never get tired of those, I dont even talk to eagles fans I just say “Ronde”
