Wes Welker glad after getting the franchise tag

Wes Welker, Donald Butler AP

Patriots receiver Wes Welker is perfectly happy not being able to test the free market.

After getting the franchise tag on Monday, Welker said he’s glad it assures that he’ll remain with the Patriots in 2012, and he hopes for a long-term deal that keeps him in New England for long after that.

“Glad that I will be a Patriot in 2012,” Welker wrote on Twitter. “and hopefully ’13,’14,’15,’16,’17,’18.”

In the 2018 season Welker will be 37 years old, so it sounds like Welker has every intention of finishing his career with the Patriots.

The Patriots are expected to add another receiver (perhaps using their first-round pick to acquire Mike Wallace), but Welker’s status as Tom Brady’s favorite receiver won’t change this year. And maybe not for many years.

Who wouldn’t be happy to get paid $9 mil?

He won’t last to 37. The skills that make him a threat in this league will be gone by then. If he were 6’4″ and had great hands those are traits that last much longer.

  4. ampats says: Mar 6, 2012 8:39 AM

When you play for the best organization in professional sports why would he want to go somewhere else?

    patcheidiot,
are you going to keep posting the same dumb comments on every Welker post as you did yesterday?

  5. sj39 says: Mar 6, 2012 8:49 AM

I wonder if he will hold out while waiting for that long term contract.

    Patscheatiots.

What a surprise. The one trick pony. Don’t you ever have anything constructive to add? Or do you cut and paste the same comments on every Patriots-related post? It’s always interesting to find these Patriot haters showing up. How about identifying the team YOU are a fan of? Let me guess, Jets? Dophins? Bills? Ravens? or Steelers? Stand up and be counted instead of hiding behind your inane ID. It’s pretty clear where my (patpatriot7) loyalties lie. Stop hiding. Stand up and be counted.

    .

Brady and Welker work together as well as any QB- WR combo in the league. I’m not convinced that Welker would be as effective ob another team.

The Pats arent going to sign Wallace, its crazy talk. They will not invest the amount of money it takes to sign Wallace (who is rumored to want to break the bank). Add what Wallace wants to Welkers salary and the Pats will not invest that much % of the cap at WR.

Also add the fact that you would have to give up a first round pick, and PAY for Wallace……not gonna happen.

They might sign a good WR but not at the money Wallace will get.

I do agree that Wallace is a great fit for their offense, they need a field stretching WR.

No need trying to rationalize with these guys.

The way I see it, their hatred for the Pats is greater than their love of their own team. As much as they hate the Pats, they are so quick to click on any link regarding them and post their ignorant comments.

  12. bigjdve says: Mar 6, 2012 9:21 AM

He is probably glad the Patriots still believe in him. He caught alot of flack about that catch. The franchise tag (with 9 million number attached) is one heck of a way to show that the team still really values you or at least wants you.

I hope he gets a good deal quickly so that they can worry about other things.

It is also nice to hear that another player isn’t griping about getting the tag.

565 catches the past 5 seasons.
Exactly zero other WR’s in NFL history have accomplished that.
With extra draft picks, cap flexibility and some key injuries returning, the Patriots aren’t going anywhere.
Welker will hoist a Lombardi before they’re done.

    In a related item, you’re a schlep.

  16. barryblogs says: Mar 6, 2012 10:27 AM

Whatever all you Pats haters think – they know how to manage the salary cap better than any team in the league, it’s how they stay near top every year, and why Belichick drives us fans crazy by trading down picks each year – salary control. With Welker in the fold and a big WR free agent signing and 4 picks – we’ll contend again and maybe win it all. Great move for Pats and Welker.

  17. tedmurph says: Mar 6, 2012 10:28 AM

He doesn’t want to go anywhere, he knows NE w/Brady is the best place for him. IMO he doesn’t hold out either, he doesn’t seem wired like that. Besides, most guys that hold out are at the end of rookie contracts, where it doesn’t cost them as much(ie Mankins), rather than making 9.6mil guaranteed. After the Stevie Johnson contract, it shouldn’t be that hard to slot Welker between that amount and what the top guys like Fitzgerald make on a long term deal.

  18. patsfiend says: Mar 6, 2012 10:30 AM

I think she should lock in Welker, but 4 years max. You’re the best, Wes, but not so sure you’ll be catching passes from any Patriot, never mind Tom Brady, in 2018.

Hopefully I’ll be watching the 5-time SB Champion Patriot games in a life-sized 3D hologram in my living room in 2018. Sweet.

  19. opneon says: Mar 6, 2012 10:33 AM

Here’s one Ravens fan that thinks Welker is great! Working the slot means you are going to be trying the catch the ball in traffic with someone about to knock your head off as soon as you touch the ball…so stop with the “butterfingers” talk. He’s also getting passes that are on the ground or behind him, and pulls in most of them. I don’t know if he can keep that up until age 37, but for now, he is one of the best slot receivers now,,,or maybe ever. It sounds more like narrow-minded Squealers fans. If they lost to the Pats the way we did, they’d still be finding some illegal formation or some other foul the refs missed…instead of just admitting that they lost the game with dropped balls or missed FGs. Just take the defeat like a man and look forward to next year.

  20. touchdownroddywhite says: Mar 6, 2012 11:19 AM

The tag is being used only to buy some time. Welker will get a 4 or 5 year deal for around 30-35 million before the start of the season and the Pat’s WILL pursue Mike Wallace. Whether or not they’re successful is a different story…

  21. tigerlilac says: Mar 6, 2012 11:31 AM

You have to love Wes. Great player. Hard worker. Great dry sense of humor. Possibly the smartest guy (common sense) to come out of Oklahoma since Will Rogers. Hands the football to the ref after a touchdown. Takes responsibility. And if you saw him interviewed after SB 42 there is no question how much he cares about his teammates and winning.

A few of the comments on Twitter in response to WW’s tweet are horrible. Why do people act so nasty over the internet to a guy like him? There’s ABSOLUTELY NOTHING hatable about him. He’s everything you want as a teammate and player. I was so happy when the Pats traded for him because I loved him when he was in a Miami uni. Why can’t people appreciate a person and player like him even when he doesn’t play for their squad? For example I love the heck out of DeMarcus Ware and I’m a Pats fan. Standup guy, great player. It’s sad and pathetic what passes for people’s personas online…here there and everywhere. Digital muscles FTL.

I’m obviously a Pats fan, also, and agree that this patcheatiots (don’t know and don’t care if I typed that the way she does) is a bitter moron. What I have a problem with is you lumping Bills, Dolphins, Ravens fans in with the whiny Jets and Steelers fans. This imbecile is most likely a Jets fan still hurt by that hysterically funny press conference Wes gave back in ’10, where he made all those foot references, which Belichick benched him a series for, by the way.

I’m curious when these people will start piling on Gregg Williams, who rewarded players for knocking people out of games. I won’t hold my breath, though.

Figures that a kindergartner such as yourself would whine about my last post. And if they DID limit players to playing where they are actually from, then your region would be totally screwed, since the Northeast is practically bereft of homegrown athletic talent.

Welker has put up a major career so far and looks to be doing it for some more years to come…

if you are playing good enough to get tagged, and you aren’t wasting all your cash on posse and glam life BS, there should be no problem with avoiding all the free agent drama, stress, and risk of not getting paid by just taking the automatic top tier paycheck….

only the guys that have been dumb with the cash or have too much ego are uptight about getting tagged…

Yet you post this comment. New England sports fans aren’t fooling anyone…you guys are THE most insecure chumps on the planet. Then again, nearly a century of the New York Yankees utterly dominating your second rate MLB franchise will do that to a fan base. Now the Giants have your football team’s number as well. Joe Adams had just come off of the flu and had a bad day. He has clocked under 4.3 several times and catches everything close to him. If you watched his film you would see his skills. The proof will be after the draft and the Pats have already scheduled him for a meeting in New England. No one is a lock, but this kid is outstanding

Bozo State? How many titles does redneck Arkansas have? None in recent history.

BTW, Jarius Wright was the best WR on the Razorbacks last season. The ONLY WR over 1000 yards and the only player with over 10 TDs. Adams was a pretty good punt returner though.

Speaking of carrying clipboards, former Hogs QB Ryan Mallett sure looked good carrying one all of last season…good practice for what will be his job as a career backup.

Which org is better? Try the Steelers, who won TWO Super Bowls that are more recent than teh Pats last SB “win*”. OR the Giants, also with TWO Super Bowl wins in that same time span. Both more successful more recently than the Pats, who have 3 tainted titles* from almost a decade ago.
