APRashean Mathis has played nine years with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He’s now on track to make it a full decade.
Six days from free agency, Mathis has agreed to terms on a new deal. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that it’s a one-year, $5 million contract.
In 2011, Mathis earned a base salary of $4.45 million. He tore an ACL in November, appearing in only nine games.
Though some may point out that the deal is short, it’s actually better than a multi-year deal with an option or roster bonus due in 2013. In those situations, the team will keep the player if he’s effective — cut him if he isn’t. In this situation, Mathis is guaranteed to get back to the market in 2013 no matter how he performs this season.
And with a one-year deal, he’s got a strong incentive to play well.

Not bad
This might be the most pointless story today, with all the manning thing going on
But…..but…..but…..this article doesn’t mention Peyton or bounties!!!…..
Actually I think those two stories are pretty entertaining, and I think I speak for most in saying this offseason is a whole lot more interesting than the last!
He’s washd up i seen the bak of his jersey alot b4 the injury
Good for the Jaguars and good for Mathis…deal makes sense all around…just hope it’s one of a few more re-signs for the Jaguars. (Scobee,Lowery)
Mathis looked like a youngster before the ACL tear. Here’s to hoping he can get back to that in 2012.
In Gene we Trust
Not surprising. He was Gene’s pick nine years ago and he’s paid dividends ever since. Free Safety from Bethune-Cookman turned NFL starting Corner
Rashean was having a great year before the injury and was setting himself up for a nice payday.
So congrats to him on the solid deal, hopefully he can heal up and earn a few more paydays. He is a true consummate pro.
As a FOOTBALL fan,
and a close friend of the association
Rashean is an amazing player and should of taken the 16.5 over 3 New England wanted to give
Worked pretty well for Carlos Rogers
This is a sign of respect by the franchise (1 yr. guaranteed deal) met by the respect of an aging veteran who was injured during a contract year. I love it. He lost a year on paper, buy essentially gets a redo.
I’m ok with this.
Which games were you dudes watching? The one where Mathis tried to arm tackle a TE or the one where his tackling form was to push from behind as the WR dances into the end zone? Wait, that’s the highlight reel. Gene Smith is awful. I’d just as soon trust him as I would a prostitute with a camera.
Don’t forget. He’s from Jax.
Went to Englewood.
Mathis is a 31 years old DB coming off knee surgery. He has missed games in 4 of the last 5 seasons with various injuries. I just don’t see the value…sorry!
Good for him though…..cant hate on a man for getting paid!
Great…now they need to address the other 52 players on the roster….
Played lights out ball until the injury – hope he makes it back to form.
@mikehock. Ever hear of MJD, league rushing leader?
