At the press conference announcing his five-year, $43.5 million contract with the Texans, Arian Foster became choked up as he talked about why the deal was significant to him: It meant his family would never struggle the way it did in his childhood.

Foster began to cry as he talked about one particular time when his mom came through for the family.

“She pawned her wedding ring to give us some food that night and I just told myself that I wanted to do something with my life that -- excuse me, I’m sorry,” Foster said before stepping away from the podium for a moment.

Foster expressed pride that he now provides for his mother, his wife and his 2-year-old daughter.

“I just wanted to do something with my life to make sure that when I had a kid she never had to worry about the lights being on,” Foster continued. “She can’t have to worry about any of that. That’s one thing my family had is we try to smile through it all. That’s why I try to remain as optimistic as possible.”
