After the 2011 season ended, Ravens center Matt Birk contemplated retirement.  He has since decided to return.

He now plans to return for more than one more season.

A source with knowledge of Birk’s thinking tells PFT that Birk now feels great, and he wants to play a couple more years.

The 14-year veteran, who was named last month the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year, entered the league in 1998.  He joined the Ravens in 2009.

  1. Is he a free agent? Being the article refers to him as “Ravens center” I have to think he’s still under contract with them…

Anyway– Even though I am a Vikes’ fan and Birk is native to Minnesota, playing several years here— I have no desire on a return to Minnesota… And I really don’t think Birk would want to come back for a “rebuilding” project currently underway, either.

    Good Luck, Matt.

  2. Birk is a class act.

He said he wants to be back in Baltimore, and at this point in his career, he’ll be an excellent bridge to whomever Ozzie Newsome brings in to learn behind Matt.

The ideal situation would be Baltimore taking Peter Konz at #29, and he can play LG (Grubbs will get a big-time deal with another team) for a year or two and then take over for Birk once he decides to hang ’em up.

  3. Down to earth and a Great guy but, the mind says a couple more years, the body says I am done!!!!!!!
