Carl Nicks: “In my mind, I pretty much am gone”

Saints quarterback Drew Brees sets new NFL single season passing record in New Orleans Reuters

All-Pro guard Carl Nicks will be free agency’s top offensive lineman if he makes it to the open market unsigned. The Saints haven’t so much as made Nicks a contract offer since season’s end, and he told WWL-TV New Orleans on Friday that he fully expects to hit free agency.

“In my mind, I pretty much am gone, to be honest. They’re gonna do something in the next four days that they haven’t done in the last four weeks?” said Nicks, referring to the lack of a contract proposal from the Saints. “I really don’t think so.”

Nicks has all along expressed hope that the Saints would re-sign him, but at the same time wants more money than teammate Jahri Evans. He can’t have it both ways, because New Orleans can’t afford to spend so much on two guards. The Saints are strapped for salary cap space.

Nicks should have no shortage of suitors on the open market. We suspect he’ll have become the NFL’s highest paid interior offensive lineman by no later than the end of next week.

Bountygate, Nicks gone, Colston likely gone, Brees franchised and pissed about it. Has a team ever had a worse start to an offseason??

These are the types of players Miami should be tripping all over themselves for to build a strong core, not Peyton Manning.

I wanted him on the Cowboys, at one point… but the truth is that you can’t spend that much money on a guy like him.

Does he deserve it? Absolutley… However it won’t be from the Cowboys.

I see him going to Tampa or Kansas City.

I would welcome Ben Grubbs or Chris Meyers in addition to Brandon Carr.

  38. discosucs2005 says: Mar 9, 2012 9:24 PM

I don’t know if they will get him, but I’m sure the 49ers will make a play for him. I don’t think there is much point in listing the teams that would want him, but you can pretty much eliminate any team that wants Manning until that deal is done and all the money is worked out.

  39. gb4mn0 says: Mar 9, 2012 9:25 PM

I’d love to see the Pack grab him. It’s unlikely TT would pull the trigger but they’ve had to do a lot of shuffling around of their OL last year and Nicks would help fill a big need.

  40. steelersarewhatfootballisabout says: Mar 9, 2012 9:26 PM

Lots of talk from a team who can’t get any fans to the games. What’s that…10 losses in a row (and counting)?

    London Bucs.

  45. duncanthecat says: Mar 9, 2012 9:40 PM

The Niners would fill a huge hole. Considering they aren’t going to spend it on a QB, why not.

  46. skinsdag says: Mar 9, 2012 9:53 PM

In my opinion I think he is mostly needed in DC and his presence would be ideal there. Shanny loves the running game. We have a solid and young rb core with both Royster and Helu who both played well with a mediocre line and Hightower who is versatile. The skins need this guy. If we get him, our 0-line is instantly upgraded and one less worry in the draft, we can then look for a developmental later round guy rather than spend our first on one. Better run game, better QB protection (hopefully a rook)

    HTTR, Let’s do this

  47. wvfinfan says: Mar 9, 2012 9:55 PM

Miami Should sign Nicks and Flynn for the less than the price of one Manning. This is the move the Fins should make, as much as I love manning Miami needs a lot o help at Right Guard, and Right Tackle.

Columbo was a waste of space. He was like a union worker there but not really doing anything, but he still gets paid.

  48. colt2011 says: Mar 9, 2012 10:00 PM

He shouldn’t be surprised or feel neglected. There are some very serious salary cap problems around the entire league. Players have to stop upping the ante, holding out for more money. There isn’t much money to spread around and I’ve never seen it grow on trees. In New Orleans, the money situation is about to get worse. The Owner is going to take a very hard hit with the fine he’ll be paying for ‘bountygate’. The big contracts cannot survive.

Colts just cut 5 key veteran players and are looking to trade others. Reportedly they cut equivalent of 51 mil to free up cap space.

Another big problem in NO is Brees. He wants 23 mil, got tagged and refuses to accept/sign it. He’s not worth 23 mil, teammates want raises too and no one wants to come back down to earth from outerspace. Just not enough money for everyone.

Several other QB’s have restructured contracts to free up cap space. Brees hasn’t even offered and his team has the greatest money problems. Teams move money around but it’s never going to be available. Easier to let players go.

What Colts did today was harsh and shocking but they couldn’t pay big contracts without money. You can’t draft rookies, sign free agents without it. The player contracts have skyrocketed to unreachable levels. They need to slow down a bit, lower expectations. Out of control=out of money=out of work/a job. Reality.

I just LOVE all the Saints haters out there. You were all so invested in having the Saints as your doormat, and then got the best QB in the league, won play-oof games, broke records and they won the Superbowl. Now with this overblown “bountygate” garbage the piling on starts. The hate is palpable.

I got news for ya. The Saints are going to re-sign Brees and everyone will forget how difficult the negotiations were. Then, they’ll re-sign Meachem and let Nicks and Colston go. Then they’ll bring in an interior lineman in FA.

Then? Well, here’s the story. Saints lose all their draft picks this year and the first next year. But it won’t matter. They will USE the adversity to play angry all year. The defense will be lights out. They win the Superbowl at HOME, first team ever,

And then all of you hypocrites and loudmouths cry your eyes out.

After the utter dismantling of two of the powerhouse franchises over the last ten years (Pittsburgh and Indy) and everything falling apart in the Big Easy, I can’t help but think the NFL is undergoing its first changing of the guard that its had on years. With SF, NYG, GB, and Baltimore all stepping up their game in recent years, there’s bound to be new legacies. Now all we need is Giselle to bitch at Tom Brady enough for him to want to retire. “You’re a demigod Tom, you don’t need that team anymore, they are terrible anyway.”

  55. daltex says: Mar 9, 2012 10:34 PM

I wouldnt mind seeing a star on the side of his helmet, but he likely wants too much. We need to use that cap space on defenders.

  56. sfsaintsfan says: Mar 9, 2012 11:03 PM

Nicks is a very good football player, but he was “made” to look even better by Brees. The same goes for Colston. Whoever signs either of these players will overpay, big time. They will both still be “good” but they will not be elite.

The Saints will pick up an interior lineman in free agency who will take his place and do a good job. Brees makes the offense tick, not a guard.

And Brees also needs to decide if he wants to “Break the Bank” like Manning did with the Colts or does he want a very good, but not crazy contract? If he wants to break the bank he will drag the Saints down for the next few years. The Saints will lose draft choices because of this overblown “bounty” business, and free agency will be where they will have to make it up.

Saints will win the Super Bowl at “home” in 2013, bank it!
